It seems as though the motion lighting on my Mother's home (she has three units) may be malfunctioning. I went digging to find some lighting that has some sort of communication with a computer. I found zilch.

Anyone else tried looking for similar and come up with something?

Check out the smartthings.com

It's a set of zigbee devices that connect to a control hub. Not sure if they have a motion sensor light combo, but they have outdoor controlled lights and motion sensors that you can program to work in tandem and even do things like alert you when you want.

It's pricey I think, but so far the best flushed out set of DIY and program-yourself devices to replace other generic home security/automation devices that I found.

Are you looking for a simple on/off control or something with feedback?

Andy Ricke - Thank you for your reply. I will look into that information.

Brad Tissi - Also, thank you for your response. I am looking for something similar to the dual floodlight/motion sensor fixtures that are so common on homes these days. However, I would like to have the fixture have the capability to report when motion was detected, if possible.

I think something like this is what I am after:

you could do that out of band with either current detection on the
light power wire or a photoresistor stuck on the edge of the bulb. a
sharp increase would mean the lights came on.

I like the direction you are going, Chris. However, I need some help. Can you explain the part about "out of band" with current detection on the light power wire?

"out of band" just means you don't have to actually modify the device
in any way. the sensor Travis linked is what I had in mind. it's
also possible to make your own, and much smaller, if you don't need a
precise measurement, I think there's a couple instructables with ways
to do it, just skip the calibration. if the outside lighting is on
its own circuit you could even do this inside, or at the electrical
box, making it much more convenient to get power and data to it..
