"Brewing
Beer and
Building
Pyramids:
Egyptian Beer,
National
Heritage, and
Orientalism"
by Dr. Omar
D. Foda
Did you know that a
worker on the
Pyramids of
Giza once
asked to be
excused from
work in order
to brew beer,
and his boss
agreed? We’re
excited to
kick off 2026
with our first
virtual
lecture of the
year, a
fascinating
exploration of
beer,
heritage, and
how we view
Ancient Egypt
today.
Using this compelling
story as a
starting
point, Dr.
Foda will
examine the
history of
beer in
Ancient Egypt
and how
interpretations
of Egypt’s
past have been
shaped by
colonialism,
Egyptomania,
and
orientalism.
His talk
invites us to
reconsider who
claims Ancient
Egypt’s
heritage, and
why.
Omar D. Foda is an
author and
scholar of
Egyptian
history, a PhD
graduate in
Near Eastern
Languages and
Civilizations
from the
University of
Pennsylvania,
and the author
of Egypt’s
Beer: Stella,
Identity and
the Modern
State. He
has taught at
Towson
University,
Bryn Mawr
College, and
the University
of
Pennsylvania,
and his work
draws on both
scholarly
research and
family
history.
We hope you’ll join us
for this
thought-provoking
start to our
2026 virtual
lecture
series.
