Please take a few moments to read the following tips and rules regarding your membership.

PURPOSE FOR THE GROUP

We have become a resource for all things Arcadia and the greater Phoenix area. I now describe the group as Angie’s List meets Craigslist meets Block Watch. This being said, I would really like to see more questions and answers regarding child rearing. Admit it, people, we all have questions about our kids and their behavior so please feel free to ask - especially you new parents! We have over 400 people on this group and almost everyone has children. What a wealth of experience!!!

INVITING NEW MEMBERS

There are really no constraints on who can join our group. We have members who live all over the valley. We also have people who don’t have kids. Don’t let the name of our group limit who can be members. Of course, some of the topics will be pertinent to parents or to people who live around here but most are not so if you have a mother-in-law who lives in North Central, go ahead and invite her!

The easiest way to add a new member is to send them the following link. It may take me a few days to approve their membership but trust that it will happen.

SEARCHING THE ARCHIVES

Google stores every message that is sent via our group. If you think there is a possibility that a subject has been discussed in a previous email thread, maybe it would be worth your while to search the archives. In order to access this archive, please visit our group’s address at http://groups.google.com/group/arcadiaparents. This address, among others, is listed at the bottom of each email sent to the group. If you click on this address, it will send you directly to the page with the archives. You can use the search box and type in your key word, such as, “dentist” or “babysitter” and all of the emails containing that word will come up.

CREATING A NEW EMAIL

When sending a message with a new topic to the group, please start a new thread by sending an email to Arcadiaparents <arcadiaparents@googlegroups.com>.

Do NOT reply to an already existing email that had a different subject. For example, if someone sends out a message regarding hair salons, please do not respond by asking about dog sitters, even if you change the subject heading. The archives will store your message along with those regarding the original subject.

REPLY VS. REPLY ALL

If someone asks for a recommendation for a business and you have one, please hit “reply all” so that the information goes out to the entire group. This has become a great resource for all of us so let’s continue to share the wealth. If, on the other hand, you feel like keeping a response between you and the sender, please reply directly to them. This leads me to my next point.

ETIQUETTE

Our group has been VERY cordial to each other and to the businesses that have been recommended via our emails. Let’s keep it this way. The only reason that I bring this up is because the Arcadiaparents is modeled after a San Francisco neighborhood group to which I still belong. On occasion, people voice very strong opinions to the whole listserv that really should be directed toward one member. This can make it quite uncomfortable for everyone! If a situation like this were to ever occur on our group, I’d probably let you know if you need to “take it outside”!

GETTING FEWER EMAILS IN YOUR INBOX (GETTING THE DIGEST)

If you feel that you are getting too many emails from our group, you can change your settings so that you get a digest email that contains all messages sent during the day, rather than receiving each message as it’s sent. There are plusses and minuses to this - the plus being that you don’t get so many emails but the minus being that if someone offers something for sale or for free, you may miss out. Your choice!

One of our first members, Danny, helped y making these handy instructions explaining how to change your settings to get the digest.

Step one:

Access your Google Plus Account… use the link at the bottom of all the e-mails from the Group

Edit “My Settings” by clicking on the upper right icon

Step Four:

Edit “Membership and email setting” by clicking in the drop down Menu

Step Five:

Select the Frequency in which you liked to receive the ‘grouped’ e-mails.

Note: some of the e-mails the Arcadia Parents send are real-time so grouping too large would create a lag time of you receiving e-mails.
