Me and the Garden

 Hello gardeners. I have been remiss in being involved in the garden. Due to health issues and other issues I am going to be way less involved. However, as the treasurer. My own title invented. There is still money in the account that is paying the water bill. It also has paid for lots of things over the years, including the wonderful irrigation system. I have tried to contact the real estate agent that represents the owner of the the property, but they have not return my call. The reason I called is because I thought perhaps with all the development going on that the garden may be in some jeopardy. But I don’t know that for sure. I saw that there was activity in the garden, the parts that were planted looked really great. If anybody is still interested in maintaining their involvement  and  taking over the responsibility of paying that water bill etc. please contact me. Sincerely, Tana.

Hi Tana and fellow (perhaps former?) gardeners,

Good to hear from you! I am sorry you’ve been sick, I hope things are getting better.

I definitely want to talk to you about the garden. I am the only one who is still involved, I haven’t seen anybody else in the garden since last fall. Flannery with the Atlanta Food Bank was contacting the area’s community gardens early in the year distributing donated seeds. At the time, I didn’t realize that nobody would be coming back so I took and planted some seeds – which is what you are seeing in the garden now. Flannery also organized a group of volunteers who did a great job of clearing most beds early in the spring, but as you can see, it’s all badly overgrown again.

I am trying to keep up with the planted beds but it’s taking a lot more time than I really want to spend, particularly since the water timer busted in winter so I keep it off and water manually (which means going over there during the week when it isn’t raining).

So this isn’t sustainable for me either. I can take over paying the water bills from you, and I suppose I’ll call the county and discontinue the service when the money runs out unless we can restore some membership.

 

So if there is any interest from anybody please let me know. Otherwise, I am going to assume that everybody is giving up their plots. I can try to drum up some new membership elsewhere but I definitely need to hear from the developer to see what’s going on first.

Anne and I had wanted to get involved in the garden again this year and were wondering when we’d hear something about work days or meetings. I didn’t realize that membership had more or less evaporated. I’m definitely still interested, although my availability may be a little tight over the next month or two.

Michael, let me know when you plan to be in the garden again, and I’ll see if I can make it. I’ll also be happy to chip in what would have been our dues for the year to help with the water. I don’t know what the water expense is, but hopefully it will help.

We obviously have no control over the owners’ plans for that lot, but I’d hate to lose the garden. It feels like we might have an opportunity to bring in some fresh members as the new apartments and condos open at Sams Crossing.

I’d be willing to give it one more try if I could switch plots. For some reason, despite all the soil amending I did, nothing has done very well there. Keep me in the loop, please. And I think I may have forgotten to clean up my plot in the Fall- I’ll stop by and check!

I spoke to the management company for the garden land. They have no plans as yet to develop the space and told me they would give 3-6 months notice. She also said the space looked nice (despite the weeds and random small trees that are in front. And if anyone can clean the front up, that would be appreciated!)

There is $145.10 left in the garden account. The water bill on April 30 (for 2 months) was only $6.57! It has usually been around $12. For now and for ease, I will keep the auto pay to the county until the money is gone. However, if someone wants to collect dues and take over, I will transfer it. My thought is to just have folks use the resources and space we have, and don't charges dues. If need be, we can revisit it later. I can order a new timer with the funds (I think is was $20 ish) because that would make irrigation so much easier. And I can teach anyone how to repair the system it there are leaks.

Hi Tana,

Thanks for the update!

I agree that we don’t necessarily need to collect “dues,” at least for now. However, I do want to be able to purchase things like paper bags for weeds and crop/plot markers (so far, that’s all I can think of).

I would be happy to learn how to install a new timer and otherwise deal with irrigation, though the extent of my mechanical abilities is usually limited to changing light bulbs. Unless they are halogen.
