I am posting this (belwo this note) because FDA posted it ! I am *assuming* it must be because of a higher % then what the FDA allows to pass through to the foods normally, but I really have no idea if that is true or not. It is speculation on my part !
Pam ---This is just speculation because I can't get any more conformation than you can --but animals handle salmonella differently than humans do --an animal can be infected with salmonella and never show symptoms --but shed the bacteria in their stool.
Of course, as with everything else, some animals do get quite ill from salmonella but I would venture to say that it is probably animals with compromised immune systems, young animals, ill (in some way) animals or older animals and some animals test negative for salmonella even if their food sources test positive for it.
I would think this recall of the biscuits comes because some humans have gotten very ill, and there have been reports of a number of deaths, the source being the peanut butter/paste used in preparing the recalled human products. It is very likely that the recalled dog biscuits were made using the same tainted peanut butter/paste used in human food and the handling of these biscuits would be even more likely to cause human illness than "normal" kibble which carries some risk of causing salmonella to infect those who handle it.
If one were to be really honest about it, it probably is more of a concern for humans than the animals that prompts the recall ---although with all the past year's recall of deadly pet foods, every one is really jumpy so better safe than sorry. Which pet food company would want to be sued because humans got ill handling dog products and/or sued again because an animal got sick?
In all my years and with all the technological/medical progress that has been made during those years, I cannot ever remember plants being infected with salmonella (lettuce/spinach/peppers) --only meat and meat products like eggs along with trichinosis. I can remember warnings about those things and cooking meats well. We used to eat raw eggs and drink wonderful egg nog around the holidays --now we don't dare. Even when people had to can their own vegetables/meats there were relatively few cases of botulism --we never had nation wide scares. This has only happened since NAFTA, radiating food, faster transportation, gassing of our food, cloning and the gene manipulation of our food which allowed for longer shelf life and the importation of food products from around the world --often 3rd world countries where sanitation is not quite the same as it is here--and because it is cheaper to import than to pay the US farmer.
