DSP&S Staff

The Diversabilities Support Program & Services (DSP&S) advocates to provide equal access to students with disabilities in higher education. Through the provision of academic adjustments and specialized services, students are empowered and advance academically, personally, and increase their independence to become successful.

DSP&S provides educational support for eligible ELAC students with disabilities in the achievement of their academic and vocational goals. Assistance such as note takers, , special tutoring, audio CD and E-Text for the blind, mobility aids and equipment loans. In addition, special learning skills classes and computers are available to enhance DSP&S student classroom success.

The goal of the Disabled Student Program and Services is to provide accessibility and academic accommodations to all Los Angeles Trade-Technical College students with disabilities. The mission of the JHHS Student Services Department is aligned with the District mission to help all students learn the skills, acquire the knowledge, and develop the behaviors necessary for them to reach their full potential as citizens who can meet the challenges of a changing society. The Student Services Staff work as collaborative partners with parents, teachers, administrators, and the community to promote positive self development, academic achievement, social responsibility, and life-long learning.

Counselors assist students in their academic development and educational planning in a variety of ways including course selection, scheduling, assessing interests and abilities, and consulting with parents and teachers to see how students are progressing in their classes. Counselors also coordinate ongoing systematic activities designed to assist students individually in establishing personal goals and developing future plans.

Counselors will assist students in exploring a wide variety of post secondary options. Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions. Counselors will also help students understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training and the world of work. The College and Career Room offers many resources and opportunities for students to explore post secondary options.

A school psychologist provides support to students, parents, and teachers through evaluation, consultation, and counseling. School psychologists use data to inform each of these processes. Psychologists are available to assist students with any personal or social concerns that may be affecting their learning. Individual and group counseling services are provided for students requiring additional direction. Group counseling allows the students a safe environment to explore their concerns with other students experiencing similar issues. Psychologists also make appropriate referrals to outside community agencies for students in need of additional services.

Social Workers are available to assist students with any personal or social concerns that may be affecting their learning. Individual and group counseling services are provided for students requiring additional direction. Of all the factors considered in the college application process, the high school transcript is the one that carries the most weight. Each college determines the way in which they want to receive your transcript.

The holistic education of each young person is the foundation of our approach for and with students. All individual conferences, group meetings, school-wide programs, and the other services we provide encompass this mission.

During the academic year, the Department of Student Services offers a variety of programs on subjects ranging from ethics and leadership to the college application and transition process. Through newsletters, guidebooks and other publications, the Department of Student Services keeps the TJHSST community informed of student-related issues, resources and important calendar dates.

Nominations for the Student Service and Leadership Awards 2023 are now open. Follow this link to complete a nomination for a student who has exemplified exceptional service and leadership during this academic year. Students may also nominate themselves and/or a peer.

The Student Services Department supports the school system's vision and mission by taking a proactive role in providing educational opportunities for all students. Services provided include counseling and conferences with children and parents; identifying and assisting children and families in accessing services to address unmet needs (home, school, community); identifying physical, emotional, social, and financial barriers preventing students from succeeding in school; investigating custody, residency, and out-of-district issues; coordinating hearings for students suspended from school and ensuring due process for all students.

Student Services is committed to supporting the instructional process by identifying and eliminating barriers to learning, advocating for the needs of the whole child, and empowering all students to become lifelong learners in the 21st century.

The military family and youth liaison (MFYL) is available to assist military-connected students. Working in partnership with our local and military community, the MYFL acts as a communication link between the installation and the school district in order to ease the transition for the military child. The MFYL coordinates and supports the efforts to: assess needs, build awareness of resources, and connect those with needs to supportive solutions. In addition, the MFYL provides prevention, crisis, and conflict resolution.

The Health Services Division is a combination of health education, physical education, and health services. It includes a planned, sequential K-12 program that integrates information about specific health topics. In addition, school nurses facilitate health services such as immunizations, follow-up, communicable disease control, vision and hearing screening and follow-up, health assessments and referrals, health counseling, information for students and families, medication administration, and developing health plans for individual students.

School psychologists are highly trained in both psychology and education, completing a minimum of a specialist-level degree program. They provide assessment and testing of students for special services, consultation for teachers, and counseling for students. In addition, they provide prevention, crisis, conflict resolution, and program modification for special and/or behavioral needs.

School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in social work. They are the link between the home, school, and the community. School social workers provide direct as well as indirect services to students, families, and school personnel, such as monitoring school attendance, promoting dropout prevention, consultation, information and referral, identification of at-risk students, and counseling. In addition, they provide prevention, crisis, and conflict resolution.

WiFi Network in the UII environment is made available through the UIIConnect and eduroam facilities. This facility is provided by the development of enterprise-scale IT infrastructure realized with the UIIConnect concept which, thus far, has installed more than 900 centers access in all UII buildings, with a total bandwidth provision of up to 7 Gbps, and access for each user up to 150 Mbps. (depend on customer device)
