When I delete photos/files from the SD Card directly in my PC, it leaves "blanks" on the card where the deleted images once were, when viewing in the camera later. At least, that's how the camera interprets the deleted shots.

There's no way around it. And even on cameras where it "works" to delete the files on your PC, it's always been a bad idea to do that. I can't find it right now, but there was a good blog post on the Lexar web site explaining in layman's terms just why it's a such a bad idea. But bottom line: always delete files in-camera, and better yet, format the card when you want to empty it.

Why delete that is the question. Simply buy a second card and format that when the first one is full, then swap card number two into the camera. And repeat. Cards can keep so many pics nowadays (over 600 RAW on the Nex 7 for 16 MB card).

Hmmmmm, I've got a a6000 and a7 and I've taken 1000s of photos with each and deleted those images from the SD cards using my Mac. I've not once encountered your issue. What brand of card(s) are you using?

I've deleted from pc 200,000 times over 10 years. Many different PCs. No problem. The general proscription against PC deletee is just legend. It will be repeated here endlessly, like alligator in sewer stories.

I don't see the problem with the A6000 which is what I've been using since it first shipped. I suppose it could be an A6000 bug, but then it must be reproducible under some narrow specifiable conditions. Those conditions are not simply: "delete on your pc and put card into A6000" because I do that every day. When I see people generalize about "never do that" I suspect it is a Loch Ness monster sighting.

Put the SD Card into a Windows PC, and delete a few of the jpeg files, some using Windows file explorer, some using the picture viewer. Then, return the card to the camera, switch to playback mode, advancing one shot at a time.

If, in the A6000, I am in "View Mode" = "Folder" (see the camera playback menu) then it simply skips over the positions cleanly after deleting them in Explorer or ACDSee. If I am in "View Mode" = "Date" then it shows "?" in the spots where the deleted files were. No errors.

To jump from this observation, that in one mode it tells that a picture has been removed, to generalizations about "never delete on a PC", as some on this thread have done, is a wildly irrational over-reaction. The fact that it was posted on some other thread doesn't make it any more than a myth.

I certainly agree with you re the "never delete on a PC" myth. But, I don't think they were giving that advice based on my original query. It was more like a general belief, similar to "never/always use a protective filter".

"where it "works" to delete the files on your PC, it's always been a bad idea to do that. I can't find it right now, but there was a good blog post on the Lexar web site explaining in layman's terms just why it's a such a bad idea."

I have tried everything I could think of - deleting the files from my SDcard, deleting the LOST.dir files, turning my phone off and back on again, but no use.. I try to delete the files from my Walkman, and they stay there..

I've forced a reset like you wrote... I have deleted the folder from my SDcard... I've tried deleting them from my Walkman - but they refuse to get deleted (and they won't play, either)... I've deleted the Lost.dir folder maybe 100 times - and it keeps reappearing!

That file manager is a file explorer for android,to look for your ghost files. And the search option would be done from a PC(to look for your files).Have you tried clearing data for media storage and for walkman in settings-apps-all?

My phone is xperia Z1. When my storage is full, I found that there are two big files in Card, \DCIM\.thumbnails: .thumbdata3-1763508120 (3.95G) .thumbdata3--1967290299(4.02G).
And when I delete it, the storage will not change, it didn't release any space, I still only have 600mb space. And after 1day or 2days, the two files:.thumbdata3-1763508120 and .thumbdata3--1967290299 appeared in \DCIM\.thumbnails again, even became bigger than before.

So I search lots of methods for these two files online. most of them did not work.
I bulit two empty files which have the same name with .thumbdata3-1763508120 and .thumbdata3--1967290299, and then delete the original big files in the .thumbnails folder, and repalced these two empty files with the same names into it. But after that the space also didn't change, what so funny is, after two days, the two empty files became to the original 2 big files(each one has nearly 4G) .:smileyshocked:
And don't know Why when I delete these two files, though I can't found them anymore, the space they take isn't free out. I believe that after I delete them, the two big files are sent to some system folder for backup use and protected by the system, then it will recover them again even I have replaced them with the same name 0kb files!

and one more thing is that I didn't found the folder named LOST.DIR in my card.

Is it a bug? could anyone help me with this problem??? They take me nearly 7 GB space, oh, my god, I can't even update the walkman due to low space now !!!!:smileyshocked:

I have try many method like replace two empty files with the same name of them. It doesn't work, and it will back again. It feels like a bug or like a virus, You can not delete them, and you can found where they are after you delete them, just like a ghost ! Do any engineering fix this bug for my z1?

I mean, I have only 12GB available on my internal card, and 2 of them are taken up by .thumbdata3-XXX! And it is impossible to free up this space, because even if you delete it, even if you create empty file/directory in its place, even if you create empty file in place of the whole thumbnails filder - nothing happens! The space is not freed at all! You can restart phone as many times as you want - the space will still be taken!

And if only to laugh at users, when you delete thumbnails and/or .thumbdata folder/file - "new" .thumbdata file is INSTANTLY created in its place showing 2GB again in its size (I mean, nothing can index photos and create 2GB worth of thumbnails THAT fast)!!!

I've checked with my friend's DCIM thumbnail folder of her LG phone, the two thumbdata files are very small, however, she did take a lot of photos and still stored them in the phone. I checked the solutions online, even in youtube, many replies said they solved this problem by these solutions, but few people reported their phone are sony xperia phone, in a vedio, the storage room would be relased once he delete these thumbdata files, but this will not happen to my sony z5 & z1. That's the reasons I think the bug is only for xperia designed android system, other android phone can fix this problem by solutions online, but you will never fix this problem by them for you sony xperia phone unless you get root or restore your phone.

Play Memories Home, and in the software you can make the adjustment of removing the imported files from my camcorder (after the import of course), this however doesn't work. The files have to be deleted manually on the camera.

If you connect a camcorder both the storage card and build in memory are "read only". Therefore the "could not delete" message appears. You have to use the camera function to delete the files, even if the option "delete files after import" is selected in the PlayMemories/Picture Motion Browser.

I am having the same issue with my Handycam. I download files using PlayMemories home. It's hard to believe that this software cannot delete files from the camera, inspite of selecting the option in the software. If the option does not work it's no point in even having it there in the first place. It is a tedious task to go through all the files on the camera and then delete them individually.

I have used other cameras before and have never encounterred this issue. I was expecting better from a company like Sony. Had I known this before, I would have never purchased this camera. This is a big set back and a major disappointment. I was expecting much better from Sony and it's really hard to believe that Sony would create a product with such a big flaw.
