Carol
Garner, the auction chair, is still in
need of donations still. We need all the rock art books, objects d'art, and goodies that you can donate! We are trying something a bit different with the silent auction this
year -- preliminary bids will be taken in the vendor room during the
day on Saturday. The bidding will conclude in the evening, at the start
of the live auction. This will give everyone a better chance to view
and bid on the many items this event always features. You can reach Carol at gypscholar [at] aol [dot] com with any questions

Rock Art Studies: A Bibliographic Database
A Bibliographic Database is a work in progress which was begun in March, 1993. Currently the database contains 35,000 citations to the world’s rock art literature.. More than 11,687 citations are held in the compiler’s personal library. These and many others were reviewed for annotation. The
RAS database first became available with free and open access on the
internet through a joint partnership between the Bay Area Rock Art
Research Association (BARARA) and
the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley in 2003. That
partnership enjoyed fourteen years of service to the rock art research
community. In the fall of 2016 a new partnership was forged between the
Museum of Northern Arizona (Flagstaff) and BARARA. With its new web
interface and searchable data platform, the Rock Art Studies Database
project is poised for many more years of continuing literature updates
and relevancy.URL: https://musnaz.org/search_rock_art_studies_db/

Art Preservation - Raising Awareness, and new Scientific Discoveries
Dreams of the Stone Age dated for first time in southern Africa
Ancient rock art research could piece together how the peoples who lived in the region some 5,700 years ago interacted.
By: Sarah Wild 03 May 2017
Nature 545, 14–15 (04 May 2017)
Published online 04 April 2017 DOI: :10.1038/545014a
URL: http://www.nature.com/news/dreams-of-the-stone-age-dated-for-first-time-in-southern-africa-1.21924
Scientists
have directly dated Stone Age rock paintings in southern Africa
reliably for the first time. Their work reveals that early
hunter-gatherer peoples created art at three sites in the region, some
5,700 years ago (A. Bonneau et al. Antiquity 91, 322–333; 2017). And the
findings open the door for archaeologists and other researchers to date
thousands more rock paintings in this part of Africa — and so piece
together the lives and development of ancient people there.
The
study focused on paintings in present-day Botswana, South Africa and
Lesotho created by the San people, whose direct descendants still live
in the area. The San have been much studied, but many mysteries remain
about how they lived, and how they interacted with other groups — such
as early farmers.

Brazil's archaeologists join fight to preserve country's ancient lands Jonathan Watts in Rio de Janeiro — Wednesday 10 May 2017 Government plans to roll back regulation for construction projects Critics say proposals threaten indigenous groups and cultural heritage
Brazil’s
archaeologists have lined up alongside conservationists and indigenous
rights campaigners to protest against government proposals that they see
as a threat to pre-colonial cultural heritage as well as forests,
native communities and biodiversity.
The plan, to be debated by
Congress on Wednesday, would roll back licensing rules for
infrastructure projects, making it easier for construction companies to
bulldoze sites of ancient Amazonian civilizations before they have been
excavated.

(in the
Boca Park shopping center near the intersections of Rampart and Alta

Time: 6:45 to 8:30 pm.
Speaker: George Phillips speaking on "Pursuing Elusive Grand Canyon Rock Art"
George
(Phil) Phillips was born in Southern Nevada where he has lived for 70
years. His interest in southwestern cultural history and prehistory has
been part of his family’s enthusiasm that began in the late 1800s. In
1998 he focused on rock art through friends in the Southern Nevada Rock
Art Association. Interest in the rock art in and around the Grand Canyon
was cultivated through friendship with researchers Don Christensen,
Jerry Dickey, and Steve Freers. Physical demands for the numerous treks
into the canyon each year became known as “Christensen’s Death March.”
The rock art was complex, fragile, and stunning. A special interest
flared into an intense dedication.

Second
Annual Peruvian Rock Art Conference in Cusco in 2017
When: August 14th to 18th 2017
Where:
Cusco Peru
For
updates and further information: https://sites.google.com/view/2raec-cusco/p%C3%A1gina-principal?authuser=0 (Has Video!)
The Peruvian of Rock Art
Association (APAR) has the honor of inviting rock art researchers of
Peru and the world to the Second International Conference on Rock Art
and Ethnography to be held in the city of Cusco, from August 14 to
18, 2017.
We consider that this is a
very important event to understand the native forms of seeing the
so-called "rock art" of the world, so we emphasize the
invitation to native savants and indigenous researchers in
non-Western traditional cognition related to sites with Rock art and
sacred places.
FRAO member Peruvian Rock Art
Association (APAR) will host the Second International Rock Art and
Ethnography Conference in the third week of August 2017. This event
follows the first conference of its type carried out in the city of
Cochabamba, Bolivia, in 2014, where the importance and scope of the
ethnography for the rock art research were discussed, with emphasis
in the Andes and Amazonia.

Rock Art
Worldings - Chronologies, materialities and ontologies
When: 23-26 October 2017
Where:
Linnæus University Conference in Kalmar, Sweden
Conference Details and Registration: https://lnu.se/en/research/conferences/RockArtWorldings
Linnæus University welcomes
you to a three-day conference focused on the Post-Paleolithic rock art
of northern Europe and beyond, and specifically, the relationship
between chronologies, materialities and ontologies. Building on
recent advances in the development of rock art chronologies, we wish
to investigate how these new understandings can be put to use in
exploring aspects of prehistoric materialities and ontologies. In the
wake of works by Viveiros de Castro, Ingold and Descola, among
others, and their reconsideration of humankind's ontologies, we hope
to address how rock art and related categories of material culture
can contribute to our understanding of the prehistory of northern
Europe and connected regions. Given that ontology is intimately
intertwined with social aspects, this conference focuses not only on
the 'conceptual world', but on a broad range of lived experiences and
how these are expressed, manifested and challenged through the use of
rock art media.
The keynote lecture for the
conference – Art beyond the Cave: rock art ontologies – will be
presented by Professor Andrew Meirion Jones, University of
Southampton (UK).
