ARARA ANNUAL CONFERENCE
May 21-25, 2009
Bakersfield, CA
www.arara.org

CALL FOR PAPERS
Abstract due by March 15, 2009

The American Rock Art Research Association will hold its 36th annual
conference May 21-25, 2009 in Bakersfield, California. The following
presentation categories will be considered. Due to space limitations,
presenters are limited to one senior authorship, but there is no limit
on junior authorship.
1. Contributed Papers discuss the results of fieldwork or lab
research. Papers can include site descriptions, but they should
consist of a compilation of information, newly formulated ideas,
conclusions, or overview. Papers may be historical in nature and
present an overview of previous research, but usually include
comparative content (no more than 15 minutes, with 3-4 minutes for
questions).
2. Reports are shorter, often descriptive, such as information on
newly discovered sites, new dates for sites or images, or new ideas
for site recording. Reports present new information on a rock art site
or sites or a new way of thinking about rock art topics (no more than
9 minutes in length, with no time for questions).
3. Posters can be either descriptive or comparative. They are set up
as a display with illustrations and text that describes and discusses
the topic and/or the results of the research. Poster papers are the
best way to engage in one-on-one discussions with viewers and exchange
ideas (set up for a set time period — usually a half day — with
scheduled times for presenters to be at the poster for questions).

Please designate the presentation category on the application form.
All abstracts will be reviewed by a program committee and accepted or
rejected by April 1, 2009.

The application form and full set of instructions are available from
the ARARA website, www.arara.org.

ARARA Awards Nominations for 2009
Every year at this time, ARARA welcomes your nominations for the
people and organizations that most clearly deserve the awards
presented at the annual meeting in May. For the best outline of what
those are, go to the ARARA website and review the descriptions of the
six distinct and meaningful awards. Remember that a well written and
properly documented nomination is easier for the various review
committees to consider.

Send your nominations to:

Rock Art Foundation Tour
Bonfire Shelter/Eagle Cave
December 6, 2008

In the archaeological record of events occurring in the lower Pecos
River area perhaps none are more important than the buffalo stampedes
manipulated by early hunters in a narrow canyon near the present day
town of Langtry. This site, once known as Ice Box Cave, is today
called Bonfire Shelter. The Rock Art Foundation in cooperation with
the local landowner invites you to tour this unique site on December
6, 2008. Come join RAF guide Jim Sievers to learn more about the name
of this shelter, the ancient people who lived here, and to visit other
sites within the canyon. The landowner has been known on occasion to
join this tour and to impart his intimate knowledge of this
fascinating place to visitors. This tour is only available to current
members of the Rock Art Foundation. Other than membership there are no
additional fees and advanced registration is required. E-mail us at
rock...@aol.com to reserve your place on this tour.

Israel Rock Art Project accepting volunteer participants
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
One of the major concentrations of rock-art in the Near East is going
to be recorded and studied systematically. Over 40,000 rock engravings
are spread over our research concession at Har Karkom, in the Negev
Desert, Israel. They represent different archaeological periods, from
Hunting-gathering Pre-neolithic, through the Neolithic, Chalcolithic
and Bronze Age, to Roman-Byzantine and later assemblages. They reflect
over 10,000 years of life in the desert which joins Asia to Africa.
This is a crucial area to understand cultural connections. Some groups
of Bronze Age rock-art reflect a tradition likely to be connected to
the biblical accounts of exodus.
We wish to invite scholars and students to participate in this
research which includes both, fieldwork and widespread analysis. The
next fieldwork will take place in April 2009, for a period of 10 days.
Participants share catering and transportation costs; they bring their
own tent and sleeping bag. If you are interested please let us know.

The lower portion of the pictographs in Rattle Snake Canyon received a
layer of mud from the recent flooding of the Rio Grande. This
remarkable site is located several miles west of Langtry, TX and
includes many polychrome shaman figures.
