Field Trip Wrap-up by Carol Garner This year's ARARA field trips were exceptionally enriched by the involvement of the local Indian tribe, the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation. Their participation resulted in true cultural interchange and was also economically beneficial to the tribal members themselves. Our special thanks to Val Anderson of the Archeological Society of Central Oregon who organized field trips that gave ARARA members insight into the local culture and lore. A bevy of her co-members in ASCO and local site supervisors provided excellent guidance on the trips. And our hat is off to Mike Taylor, who worked with the tribe not only to arrange a unique visit to their Museum and a traditional salmon bake lunch, but who also got the tribe's Youth Dancers to put in a high-spirited appearance at our Friday social hour and arranged for a blessing at our banquet. All in all, the conference was a delightful cultural experience. ARARA's 2017 Silent Auction
Organized by co-chairs Carol Garner and Kellee Taylor, ARARA's successful auction this year featured an unusually large assortment of fascinating items donated by our generous members. From paintings, photos and other objects d'art to beautiful jewelry by vendors Ernie Washee and Margaret Berrier, among others, to autographed books by Jean Clottes, Carolyn Boyd, and James Keyser, the bidding was intense and exciting! Our favorite item -- a T-shirt dress donated by Keyser which was incidentally based on the cover of his first book! During the breaks, a dedicated group of volunteers worked feverishly to get all the items tagged, priced, and out on display. Our long-time favorite auctioneer, Dell Crandall, did the honors, and the only protests we heard were that people wished the fun could have gone on longer.

Rock Art Studies: A Bibliographic Database
A Bibliographic Database is a work in progress which was begun in March, 1993. Currently the database contains 35,000 citations to the world’s rock art literature.. More than 11,687 citations are held in the compiler’s personal library. These and many others were reviewed for annotation. The
RAS database first became available with free and open access on the
internet through a joint partnership between the Bay Area Rock Art
Research Association (BARARA) and
the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley in 2003. That
partnership enjoyed fourteen years of service to the rock art research
community. In the fall of 2016 a new partnership was forged between the
Museum of Northern Arizona (Flagstaff) and BARARA. With its new web
interface and searchable data platform, the Rock Art Studies Database
project is poised for many more years of continuing literature updates
and relevancy.URL: https://musnaz.org/search_rock_art_studies_db/

Art Preservation - Raising Awareness, and new Scientific Discoveries
Bear’s Ears Developments
Many
of you are undoubtedly following the developments regarding the Bears
Ears Monument, amongst others. The news continues to develop almost
daily. Suffice to say, despite the many comments and calls for it to be
left as is, the current head of Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke
has recommended that portions of it be revoked. There is still room to
be heard, many organizations are still working hard to see the monument
is not reduced. There are petitions, and calls to your representatives
- or the representatives in the areas where these monuments and parks
are located will be heard. As Americans - Native or otherwise - these
are our lands, our heritage, to protect, to pass onwards - and it is
our job to see it done. _____________________________________________
North European Rock Art: A Long-Term Perspective
By: Joakim Goldhahn Edited by: Bruno David and Ian J. McNiven The Oxford Handbook of the Archaeology and Anthropology of Rock Art -- Oxford Handbooks Online Published online March 2017 DOI: 10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190607357.013.1 URL: https://www.academia.edu/31266912/North_European_Rock_Art_a_Long-Term_Perspective
Paper - PDF download available
Abstract:
This chapter offers a long-term perspective on rock art in northern
Europe. It first provides an overview of research on the rock art
traditions of northern Europe before discussing the societies and
cultures that created such traditions. It then considers examples of
rock art made by hunter-gatherer societies in northern Europe, focusing
on the first rock art boom related to Neolithization. It also examines
the second rock art boom, which was associated with social and religious
changes within farming communities that took place around 1600–1400 bc.
The chapter concludes by analysing the breakdown of long-distance
networks in the transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age and its
consequences for the making of rock art within the southern traditions,
as well as the use of rock art sites during the Pre-Roman Iron Age,
Roman Iron Age, and Migration Period. _____________________________________________

Abstract:
Oxtotitlán
Cave paintings have been considered among the earliest in Mesoamerica
on stylistic grounds, but confirmation of this hypothesis through
absolute dating has not been attempted until now. We describe the
application of advanced radiocarbon strategies developed for situations
such as caves with high carbon backgrounds. Using a low-temperature
plasma oxidation system, we dated both the ancient paint and the
biogenic rock coatings that cover the paint layers at Oxtotitlán. Our
research has significantly expanded the time frame for the production of
polychrome rock paintings encompassing the Early Formative and Late
Formative/Early Classic periods, statistically spanning a long era from
before ca. 1500 cal B.C. to cal A.D. 600. _____________________________________________

2016 Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research Leadership - Griffith University

The
award for excellence in research leadership was awarded to Professor
Paul Taçon, Director of Griffith University’s Place, Evolution and Rock
Art Heritage Unit. For more than 36 years, Professor Taçon has
been exploring the rock art sites of Australia and south-east Asia,
while collaborating with Indigenous people in archaeological research. In
2016 alone, he helped establish the Australian Research Centre of Human
Evolution and the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research. He
led a large field research team in northwest Arnhem Land which
discovered 160 undocumented rock art sites. He also published more than a
dozen research papers, as well as a book “In the more than 12
years I have been at Griffith University, I have worked hard to build
many successful research teams and projects, mentor junior colleagues
and guide PhD students through their research programs,’’ Professor
Taçon said. “Winning the Vice Chancellor’s award for Research Leadership caps one of the most incredible periods of my research career.”

In Victory for Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Court Finds That Approval of Dakota Access Pipeline Violated the Law Victory
Ruling: Trump administration shortcut environmental review; Court
seeks additional briefing on whether to shut down pipeline June 14, 2017 — Washington, D.C.
The
Standing Rock Sioux Tribe won a significant victory today in its fight
to protect the Tribe’s drinking water and ancestral lands from the
Dakota Access pipeline.
A federal judge ruled that the federal
permits authorizing the pipeline to cross the Missouri River just
upstream of the Standing Rock reservation, which were hastily issued by
the Trump administration just days after the inauguration, violated the
law in certain critical respects. In a 91-page decision, Judge
James Boasberg wrote, “the Court agrees that [the Corps] did not
adequately consider the impacts of an oil spill on fishing rights,
hunting rights, or environmental justice, or the degree to which the
pipeline’s effects are likely to be highly controversial.” The Court did
not determine whether pipeline operations should be shut off and has
requested additional briefing on the subject and a status conference
next week.

The Channel Islands, in particular the island of Jersey has some of Europe’s most important archaeological sites that include the Neanderthal site of La Cotte de St Brelade, dating to 250,000 BC and the 6,000 year old Neolithic passage grave site of La Hougue Bie. In addition to this rich prehistoric heritage that Jersey has to offer, there are also a number of remarkably-reserved medieval castles and a unique World War II heritage in the form of the German occupation’s Atlantic Wall. This layered history provides the visitor with an almost continuous chronology from the dawn of time to up until the present day. This short tour, looking at some of Jersey’s most spectacular archaeological sites will offer something for everyone.
The tour is lead by Dr. George Nash, a specialist in contemporary and prehistoric art [Rock Art] and is currently a Research Fellow within the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Bristol and Associate Professor at IPT (Tomar), Portugal. Over the past 25 years George has undertaken a number of field projects around the world including Chile, Israel, Norway and Sardinia, resulting in the publication of many papers and books. George is currently involved in the research and conservation of cave sites in South Wales.

Rock art in danger sounds dramatic, nevertheless it is not an
overstatement. During the last hundred years different kinds of
destructions have never been so rapid and extensive. It is urgent to
record as much as possible, because in the next 50-100 years a large
part of the cultural heritage all over the world will have disappeared.
The International Rock Art Seminar offers the opportunity to attend
lectures, as well as the chances to work on some of the most beautiful
panels in Northern Europe together with participants from different
countries. Participants are welcome some day(s) before and after the seminar. _____________________________________________

The
Peruvian of Rock Art Association (APAR) has the honor of inviting rock
art researchers of Peru and the world to the Second International
Conference on Rock Art and Ethnography to be held in the city of Cusco,
from August 14 to 18, 2017. We consider that this is a very
important event to understand the native forms of seeing the so-called
"rock art" of the world, so we emphasize the invitation to native
savants and indigenous researchers in non-Western traditional cognition
related to sites with Rock art and sacred places. FRAO member
Peruvian Rock Art Association (APAR) will host the Second International
Rock Art and Ethnography Conference in the third week of August 2017.
This event follows the first conference of its type carried out in the
city of Cochabamba, Bolivia, in 2014, where the importance and scope of
the ethnography for the rock art research were discussed, with emphasis
in the Andes and Amazonia.

with rock art in the world ( along with the Vézère valley in France ) to
enter the UNESCO World Heritage List, to which 23 other areas, a
pioneering choice that has led these fundamental manifestations of human

Worldings - Chronologies, materialities and ontologies
When: 23-26 October 2017
Where:
Linnæus University Conference in Kalmar, Sweden
Conference Details and Registration: https://lnu.se/en/research/conferences/RockArtWorldings
Linnæus University welcomes
you to a three-day conference focused on the Post-Paleolithic rock art
of northern Europe and beyond, and specifically, the relationship
between chronologies, materialities and ontologies. Building on
recent advances in the development of rock art chronologies, we wish
to investigate how these new understandings can be put to use in
exploring aspects of prehistoric materialities and ontologies. In the
wake of works by Viveiros de Castro, Ingold and Descola, among
others, and their reconsideration of humankind's ontologies, we hope
to address how rock art and related categories of material culture
can contribute to our understanding of the prehistory of northern
Europe and connected regions. Given that ontology is intimately
intertwined with social aspects, this conference focuses not only on
the 'conceptual world', but on a broad range of lived experiences and
how these are expressed, manifested and challenged through the use of
rock art media.
The keynote lecture for the
conference – Art beyond the Cave: rock art ontologies – will be
presented by Professor Andrew Meirion Jones, University of
Southampton (UK).
