Rock Art Preservation - Raising Awareness, and new Scientific Discoveries

Early cave art and ancient DNA record the origin of European bison  (19 Oct)
(Editors note: This is the scientific article about the "Higgs Bison" in the popular news)
Abstract:
The two living species of bison (European and American) are among the few terrestrial megafauna to have survived the late Pleistocene extinctions. Despite the extensive bovid fossil record in Eurasia, the evolutionary history of the European bison (or wisent, Bison bonasus) before the Holocene (<11.7 thousand years ago (kya)) remains a mystery. We use complete ancient mitochondrial genomes and genome-wide nuclear DNA surveys to reveal that the wisent is the product of hybridization between the extinct steppe bison (Bison priscus) and ancestors of modern cattle (aurochs, Bos primigenius) before 120 kya, and contains up to 10% aurochs genomic ancestry. Although undetected within the fossil record, ancestors of the wisent have alternated ecological dominance with steppe bison in association with major environmental shifts since at least 55 kya. Early cave artists recorded distinct morphological forms consistent with these replacement events, around the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ∼21–18 kya).

Cape York rare Indigenous 'library of rock art' under threat by gold mine, traditional owners say
Indigenous traditional owners from Queensland's Cape York are warning a proposed gold mine would potentially damage one of the world's oldest and most important collections of rock art.

The ABC can reveal the Queensland Government has granted an environmental authority for the mine which would involve the excavation of the Laura River, near the world-renowned Quinkan Aboriginal rock art galleries.

"This is all sandstone escarpments and it's very fragile," said Nash Snider, Laura Cultural Heritage Body chairman and traditional owner.

A rock art sequence found in the Kimberley – arguably the longest and most complex in the world – could be much older than previously thought, and may predate ancient rock art in Western Europe.

October Meeting of the Southern Nevada Rock Art Association

Location: The REI store -- 710 S Rampart Blvd, Las Vegas
(in the Boca Park shopping center near the intersections of Rampart and Alta Drives)

Speaker: Nina Bowen on "It's Not About the Destination, It's About the Journey"

The Canaan Gap petroglyph site is located on a cliff face east of Little Creek Mesa and south of Smithsonian Butte. There are four main petroglyph panels and some lesser, isolated glyphs. The glyphs are very well defined. They are deeper than “normal” glyphs. It is thought the reason for this was that once the patina layer on the rock was penetrated, the glyphs eroded to a greater depth due to wind erosion. For this reason, the glyphs at this site are called “cookie cutter” glyphs.

Through some pretty thorough investigation, Joe Brame and Nina Bowen have scoured the Canaan Gap area for clues to how the area figured into the Pueblo II and Pueblo III time period. Nina will show a more complete picture of this unique formation in the Southwest Utah landscape.

Nina Bowen joined the Utah Rock Art Research Association in 1983 and has been on the board practically ever since. She has published three articles related to rock art in URARA's publications and co-authored a paper with Troy Scotter for Utah Archaeology on Utah rock art. She spends a lot of time in Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico and her current research is on Paiute Style.

  14th Nordic Bronze Age Symposium - University of Oslo   June 6 - 10th 2017
In 1977, the first Nordic Bronze Age symposium was held at Isegran, Østfold, Norway.
In 2017, the 40th anniversary of the symposium series will be celebrated, this time in Oslo.
Recent years has seen a trend towards disparate discourses, either focusing on small-scale
or large-scale, southern or northern narratives of Bronze Age Scandinavia. In this call for papers,
we encourage perspectives on the multi-scaled and contrasting Bronze Age, and the diversity and connections between e.g. landscapes, technologies, social practices and materialities. From the
snow patches of the Scandinavian Mountains to the fertile agricultural areas of south Scandinavia,
along the paths to the upland pastures to the open sea lanes, from the monumental mounds to
the mundane finds; we invite papers exploring the contrasts and connections that formed the
Nordic Bronze Age.

Deadline: Papers will be accepted until December 15, 2016
Submission Type: Abstract with a 250 word count maximum to the session organizers*

*Submission emails are within each session description
            http://www.khm.uio.no/english/research/news-and-events/events/conferences/2017/14th-nordic-bronze-age-symposium-.html

Sessions are as follows:  Linked live on the website
   •  Beyond Mapping Movement: Travel and exchange
   •  Contrasts of Bronze Age Societies
   •  Revitalising gender as a concept in Bronze Age discourse
   •  Farming: A defining element of the Nordic Bronze Age?
   •  Lithics of the Bronze Age – materials, types, contexts and technologies
   •  Rock art – diversity and complexity
   •  The context and social dynamics of rituals
   •  Nobody is perfect: contrasts in craft
   •  Demography: fluctuation, composition and mobility
   •  Bronze Age research: Past, present and future
