Society for American Archaeology Asks for Your Help in Saving the Antiquities Act As
you may know, Congressman Rob Bishop is sponsoring a bill, HR 3990, the
National Monument Creation and Protection Act, that would essentially
do away with the Antiquities Act as we know it today. The measure has
already been approved by the Natural Resources Committee. The next step
is a vote in the full House, and we need your help to stop this
legislation. Please go to our advocacy page. There, you can fill in your
contact information to get your representative’s contact information,
and call their office to ask them to oppose the bill. We also provide
talking points you can use. It is imperative that we prevent H.R. 3990
from going any further.

Trump headed to Utah in December with plans to shrink Bears Ears and Grand Staircase By Thomas Burr & Brian Maffly 27 Oct 2017 • Washington
President
Donald Trump plans to visit Utah in December to announce that he will
trim the boundaries of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante
national monuments, a move that is likely to spur an instant court
battle.
.
. . It was unclear what exactly Trump would approve, though Zinke has
suggested the president shrink the boundaries of the 1.35 million-acre
Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah that President Barack
Obama named shortly before leaving office last year at the request of
five American Indian tribes. . . .

Ongoing actions regarding North American Cultural Resources and Natural Treasures within the US Almost
daily there is new information and legal machinations regarding the
natural treasures, and cultural resources of the United States. In the
past month The Antiquities Act has been not just under review, but
stands to be potentially rewritten - if not retracted. (various sources,
US Govt. Utah's Mike Lee, NY Times, etc) The United States has
formally withdrawn from UNESCO, and while it has elected to stay as a
non-member observer state it no longer has the ability to vote. (http://wapo.st/2ypNH8v
– Washington Post) These actions, and others, along with the decisions
regarding the National Park System are all part and parcel of a larger
agenda.
The
items mentioned here are not the only items under review, revision, or
potential outright recindation. These actions endanger the heritage of
the First Nations in the terms of Rock Art, as well as their existing
culture. Along with the interests of many who espouse either an
interest or career association with it. This makes these topics of
relevance and importance to all of us. These issues are moving
quickly, and while this newsletter only comes out once a month - and
therefore many links would be woefully out of date - your editor will
try and continue to highlight the main topics to keep you apprised as
much as possible.

The
Mimbres region of southwestern New Mexico is famous for its stunning
black-on-white pottery with human and animal figures as well as
fine-line geometric designs. The presence of scarlet macaws that
probably originated in the tropical forests of Mexico, at least 750
miles to the south, and their depiction on the pottery suggest that
something out-of-the ordinary may have been occurring, at least in terms
of ritual and religion. In contrast, their pit structure and pueblo
architecture is rather ordinary. Patricia Gilman discusses Mimbres
archaeology through time, focusing on the possible relationship between
some of the pottery designs and interaction with people on the east
coast of Mesoamerica.

Island of Jersey – Archaeological Tour When: March 23-26 2018 Where: Island of Jersey, Channel Islands, UK Local Transport: Airport transfers and day visits by coach Group Size: Up to 18 Email Info: info [at] siragusatours.co.uk Tour Details and pricing: http://www.siragusatours.co.uk/23-26-march-2018 Phone: 01604 859491
The Channel Islands, in particular the island of Jersey has some of
Europe’s most important archaeological sites that include the
Neanderthal site of La Cotte de St Brelade, dating to 250,000 BC and the
6,000 year old Neolithic passage grave site of La Hougue Bie. In
addition to this rich prehistoric heritage that Jersey has to offer,
there are also a number of remarkably-reserved medieval castles and a
unique World War II heritage in the form of the German occupation’s
Atlantic Wall. This layered history provides the visitor with an
almost continuous chronology from the dawn of time to up until the
present day. This short tour, looking at some of Jersey’s most
spectacular archaeological sites will offer something for everyone.
The tour is lead by Dr. George Nash, a specialist in contemporary
and prehistoric art [Rock Art] and is currently a Research Fellow within
the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Bristol
and Associate Professor at IPT (Tomar), Portugal. Over the past 25 years
George has undertaken a number of field projects around the world
including Chile, Israel, Norway and Sardinia, resulting in the
publication of many papers and books. George is currently involved in
the research and conservation of cave sites in South Wales.

Publications
Colloqui IX - XIV ~ Summer 2017 Emmanuel Anati - General Editor Anati, E. (ed.) 2017 Publisher: Capo di Ponte, (Atelier) €40 each URL: https://renetiusbooks.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/printed-books-of-expression.pdf Contents and authors viewable at URL
Art and Religion, Colloqui IX (2016) — 14 pp. 73 ill.
What
is the role of religion, magic and witchcraft in prehistoric
and tribal art? The intellectual and spiritual motivations of art
produced various theories since the first attempts to explain
prehistoric art over a century ago. Recent research is revealing more
complex conceptual connections. In this book, authors of different
backgrounds and countries, from four continents, are presenting
examples of specific aspects, providing first-hand data. The
confrontation of different ideas and methods is contributing to
reconsider some past simplifications and generalizations.
Male and Female, Colloqui X (2017) — 119 pp. 60 ill. The
book includes papers of 20 authors from five continents. It considers
human representations in prehistoric and tribal art presenting a broad
landscape of different views and cases. In each age and culture a
specific choice is emerging in the visual arts, between preferring male
or female images, and between having or not the human figure as the
main concern. The book presents different cases and views from experts
of five continents.
Why Art?, Colloqui XI (2017 - 125 pp. 47 ill. The
volume presents a search of contents by scholars from different
continents with different experiences. Prehistoric art is like the
literature of more recent times, some depictions may concern science,
others religion, some may be school textbooks and others fiction. The
decoding of prehistoric art helps to approach the understanding of
contents and motivations.
Meaning of Abstract Signs, Colloqui XII (2017) - 101 pp. 43 ill. The
clan was planning a fight against another clan that had abused
hospitality hunting kangaroos in a reserved ground. The painter
recorded the gathering of the elders to decide the expelling of the
guest clan. He represented the elders and the warriors by standard
signs. The art-dealer sold the painting as an "Aboriginal abstract
composition”. The meaning came from the people of the clan who saw the
painting explaining the recorded event. Other examples and studies
attempt at defining the meaning of abstract signs.
Colonization, Colloqui XIII (2017) - 85 pp. 41 ill. From
an original land of origins, likely to have been in Africa, the
ancestors of humankind colonized all corners of the globe. Other
primates still survive in their limited habitat; humans live in
the equatorial regions as well as near the Arctic pole. How did such
colonization take place? Authors from five continents replied to this
question: a selection of their papers appears in this volume.
Sexual Images in Prehistoric and Tribal Art, Colloqui XIV (2017) - 103 pp. 62 ill. Since
the earliest figurative art, sex appears to be a theme of primary
concern in every corner of the world. Why were such depictions made? In
some cases oral traditions allow us to identify the cause or the
inspiration. Can we trace back the stories behind the images? Sharing
knowledge is favoring an overview on images, myths, rituals and customs
related to sex, in prehistoric and tribal art.
