A fantastic place to hang out for 5,000 years - Renovated Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve, administered by ASU, offers modern visitors a glimpse into the ancient past and its people

By: Scott Seckel — Reporter, ASU Now

    Date: 27 Nov 2017

Out on the far northwestern edge of the Valley, where the pavement turns to sand, is a place people have been visiting for 5,000 years.  Fifty centuries ago visitors chiseled images into rocks stained with desert varnish: ladders, centipedes, figures with big crazy hands, abstract geometric designs, a pair of deer standing nose to nose — in all, 1,571 petroglyphs on 579 boulders. 16th Biennial Southwest Symposium

When:  January 4-7, 2018

Where: Denver, Colorado

Boundaries are lines that make and mark spatial distinctions. Archaeologically, they are used to separate time periods as well.  The theme of the 16th Biennial Southwest Symposium is Pushing Boundaries. In it, we hope to push geographic, theoretical, temporal, practical, and conceptual boundaries.

In four invited paper sessions, the Symposium will explore:

1) The formation and meaning of Bears Ears National Monument

2) New research in chronology and chronometry

3) Plains-Pueblo interactions

4) New developments in museum archaeology and collections-based research

DStretch: An Essential Tool for your Rock Art Toolbox

If you’re not familiar with DStretch, an essential program for rock art analysis, you need to be. Created by Jon Harman, Stretch is simple to use, fast, and you can save the enhancements.  It can bring out faint pictographs that are invisible to the naked eye.  It works on digital camera images, and no special filters or lighting are needed. Use your Phone (Android/Google or iPhone) or iPad in the field to see faint or invisible rock art images. It does not require a wi-fi signal or phone connection to work.
