ARARA moves to new digs (new website!) The American Rock Art Research Association (ARARA) is changing to a new web provider. The changeover to our new site may take sometime, but until then we can be found at our new temporary website http://arara.wildapricot.org Until the changeover is complete all updated/current information can be found there. We look forward to seeing you there! Please note: While the switch is being done our regular web address http://www.arara.org is no longer being maintained or updated. For all current information on ARARA please visit the new website listed above. A notice will be given when the changeover is complete and we’ve returned to our original URL. Additionally all ARARA Online links have been changed to the new website during this changeover, so any links you require that are usually embedded in this newsletter will still take you to the appropriate place.

Presentation: What's Garrick Mallery Got To Do With It? The Multiple Strands of Evidence Accumulating in Western Message Petroglyph Interpretation and Chronology A Presentation by Leigh & Amy Marymor Sixty years after Elsasser and Contreras published the first academic paper on a peculiar form of "modern petrography," thirty-six Western Message Petroglyph sites, comprising 65 petroglyph panels, have been identified in eight western states. Our multi-year study of these quirky pictographic texts has resulted in a proposal of a chronological and cultural context for them, a proposed attribution of authorship, and tentative readings of a few of the pictographic texts. We weave together numerous strands of converging evidence that tell a story of an esoteric under-belly that sprouted in the back hills of the Wild West. _____________________________________________

Location: The REI store -- 710 S Rampart Blvd, Las Vegas 89145 (in the Boca Park shopping center near the intersections of Rampart and Alta Drives) Speaker: David Sucec speaking on Intimate Relations: Associations of animals & spirit figures in Barrier Canyon Rock Art David is a visual artist, independent curator and scholar and is Founder and Director of the BCS PROJECT. (Barrier Canyon Rock Art style & Barrier Canyon Project) He holds a Masters of Art in Painting, and a minor in Art History from San Francisco State University. He returned to university in subsequent years to study Art History more deeply, and Archaeology. During the 1990’s he attended the University of Utah, Utah Museum of Natural History, Four Corners School of Outdoor Education. He also received the Utah Humanities Council’s Research Fellowship, 1991. The BCS PROJECT is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the appreciation and preservation of Utah’s prehistoric art. The BCS PROJECT is in the process of creating a photographic inventory of Utah’s oldest prehistoric painting style—the Barrier Canyon style. The Barrier Canyon style is unique in Southwest prehistory due to its culture being hypothesized entirely from the existence of its rock art—paintings on the canyon walls of the northern Colorado Plateau. Recognized, by Southwest archaeologist Polly Schaafsma, as a distinct rock art style about 1986; the Barrier Canyon style has since emerged to be one of the two major Archaic-period painted rock art styles in the United States (possibly in the entire New World). Even when considered on a global scale, the Barrier Canyon style is a remarkable body of visual images. Barrier Canyon style rock art sites are still in the discovery period on the Colorado Plateau. When the BCS PROJECT began to document the Barrier Canyon style in 1992, the number of known sites was about 160. By 1998, the number was thought to be about 230. Today, the number of sites is estimated, by some, to be exceed than 250. (This description is paraphrased from the BCS website.)
