Standing Rock North Dakota Protests and the impact for Native American
Culture (DAPL)
This situation continues to escalate and
expand. The Army Corps of Engineers and other State Agencies have ordered
the contractors to cease and desist their operations until the courts can
make a determination upon the matter.
The protesters meanwhile remain and are continuing their
efforts. The contractors and
the companies behind them have refused to follow the court orders and have
deliberately caused damage, destruction, and irreparable harm. As this situation has shifted
from an archeological, cultural, and ecological situation to a very
potently politically charged one it has moved beyond our purview to be able
to continue to update upon it.
However it is hoped that those interested will continue to follow
this situation and when possible take safe action regarding it.

Art Events
November Meeting of the Southern Nevada Rock
Art Association
Date: November 28th
Location: The REI store -- 710 S Rampart Blvd, Las Vegas 89145
(in the Boca
Park shopping center near the intersections of Rampart and Alta Drives)
Time: 6:45 to 8:30 pm.
Speaker: Kish LaPierre
speaking on
“Preliminary Investigation of 40 Known
Archaeological Sites Containing Rock Writings On the
Nevada
Test and Training Range (NTTR) & Nellis Air force Base, Nevada (NAFB)”
Part One"
There are 40 known archaeological sites on the Nevada Test and
Training Range (NTTR) that contain rock writings. The sites are primarily
distributed in two areas: the western portion of the NTTR and the southern
range. Nellis Air Force Base is planning a collaborative archaeological and
ethnographic research project involving NAFB, affiliated Native American
Tribes, and project archaeologists who will collectively update and record
these sites over the next two years. Collaborative methods will integrate
traditional tribal knowledge and contemporary interpretation with
archaeological methods of recordation using D-stretch software,
high-accuracy Trimble GPS technology, and detailed stylistic analysis. This
presentation gives background information on 20 of the 40 known
rock-writing sites on the NTTR. Part
two will be given at a later date.
Kish La Pierre is the Cultural Resource Manager
and the Tribal Liaison for Nellis Air Force Base and the Nevada Test and
Training Range. She received a B.A. in Anthropology from California State
University, Fresno in 2003 with a focus on archaeology of the San Joaquin
Valley and Sierra Nevada Foothills, California. In 2009 she received her
M.A. in Anthropology from California State University, Bakersfield with a
focus on Mojave Desert and Great Basin archaeology.
In 2014 she transferred from
China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station to Nellis AFB. The Canaan Gap
petroglyph site is located on a cliff face east of Little Creek Mesa and
south of Smithsonian Butte. There are four main petroglyph panels and some
lesser, isolated glyphs. The glyphs are very well defined. They are deeper
than “normal” glyphs. It is thought the reason for this was that once the
patina layer on the rock was penetrated, the glyphs eroded to a greater
depth due to wind erosion. For this reason, the glyphs at this site are
called “cookie cutter” glyphs.

2017
ARARA Annual Conference
When: June 1st
to 5th 2017
Where: The
Lodge at Eagle Crest
Redmond, Oregon
The Conference Team:
Local
Arrangements: Jim Keyser
Conference Coordinator: Monica Wadsworth-Seibel
Program Chair: Louis Hillman
For updates and further information:
http://www.arara.org/conference.html
Plans are underway for the
ARARA 2017 Annual Conference to be held June 1–5. In case you haven't
heard, the meetings will be in Redmond, Oregon. Redmond is just north of
Bend, which is between the Williamette and Ochoco National Forests and is
graced with the lovely Deschutes River. Jim Keyser is the area Chair, and
he and his team have already met with many locals to plan for field trips.
The field trip wish list has
been drawn up with about 18 sites around Redmond and Bend. Sites include
petroglyphs and pictographs in Columbia River Conventionalized and Columbia
Plateau, Great Basin, North Oregon Rectilinear, and Yakima Polychrome
styles. Our tentative field trips list includes Horsethief Lake, Cascadia
Cave, Picture Gorge, Malheur Basin, Devils Pass, and Picture Rock Pass.
Some field trips will require high-clearance, 4WD vehicles, while other
sites can be accessed by any vehicle. We think there will be something for
everyone. We have an enthusiastic local team working on the field trips as
well as some possible local Warm Springs Indian cultural experiences.
We are looking forward to our
first ARARA conference in central Oregon. For those of you who are not
familiar with Redmond, it is a small, but well equipped (restaurants, motels, shopping, etc.)
town of about 30,000 people located at the junction of Hwy-97 and SR126 in
southern Oregon, about an 15 minutes north of Bend. The Hwy-20
(Boise/Portland) route also runs through Bend. The closest airport is
Roberts Field (RDM) and is actually in Redmond - with car rentals available
at the airport and a grocery store and other amenities in town.
While you are in the area, you
may want to visit the Newberry National Volcanic Monument (a massive obsidian flow) just south
of Bend. For those who want to hike or fish, there are many spots north of
Sisters along the Metolius River and Suttle and Three Creek lakes, or along
the Deschutes River which runs through the conference property.
Camping is also available (tent or RV) in many locations
including the Tumalo State Park. The conference hotel and conference center
is the Lodge at Eagle Crest, which is approximately five miles west of
Redmond, ten miles east of the old western town of Sisters, 13 miles north
of Bend and a short ten minute drive from the airport. Eagle Crest is a
Holiday Inn property on the first and second levels with a Wyndham
time-share property on the third floor. Two and three bedroom condos will
also be made available to those who wish to share their accommodations.
Reservation information will be provided soon.

14th Nordic
Bronze Age Symposium - University of Oslo June 6 - 10th
2017
In 1977, the first Nordic Bronze Age
symposium was held at Isegran, Østfold, Norway.
In 2017, the 40th anniversary of the symposium
series will be celebrated, this time in Oslo.
Recent years has seen a trend towards
disparate discourses, either focusing on small-scale or large-scale,
southern or northern narratives of Bronze Age Scandinavia. In this call for
papers, we encourage perspectives on the multi-scaled and contrasting Bronze
Age, and the diversity and connections between e.g. landscapes,
technologies, social practices and materialities. From the snow patches of
the Scandinavian Mountains to the fertile agricultural areas of south
Scandinavia, along the paths to the upland pastures to the open sea lanes,
from the monumental mounds to the mundane finds; we invite papers exploring
the contrasts and connections that formed the Nordic Bronze Age.
Deadline: Papers will be accepted until December 15, 2016
Submission
Type: Abstract with a 250 word count maximum to the session organizers*
*Submission emails are within each
session description

The
Euro-American Discovery of the Coso Petroglyphs by Alexander Rogers and Russell Kaldenberg
The Maturango Museum is proud
to announce the publication of a new book by authors by Alexander Rogers
and Russell Kaldenberg.
This book is the result of several
years’ research on the discovery of the petroglyphs, prompted by frequent questions on petroglyph
tours. It describes the original creation of the rock art, its initial
observation by Euro-Americans in 1860, and subsequent visitors,
photographers, and investigators. The authors conclude that the archaeology
and rock art of the Coso district were known prior to land withdrawal for
the Navy in early 1944, but did not play a role in the withdrawal decision.
Both authors are
archaeologists with long experience in Coso. Alexander Rogers is an
archaeology curator at the Maturango Museum; Russell Kaldenberg is former
Command Archaeologist at China Lake, and was also the lead archaeologist
for the Bureau of Land Management in California.
The book is available in the
museum store, for $6.95.
Please contact the museum at
760-375-6900, or at
http://www.maturango.org for more information or to place an order.
