Hello,

Is there a possibility of the War of the Jews, in Codex Ambrosiano, to
be a direct copy of the original aramaic work of Josephus? Or is it a
translation from Greek or Hebrew?

Shlama,

Here are a couple of quotes you might find interesting, related to the subject.

"The Syriac translation of Book VI of the Jewish War, which is
preserved in one of the codices of the Peshitta Old testament, dating
to the 5-6th centuries and at present in the Ambrosian Library in
Milan... H. Kottek thought it possible to show that the Syriac
translation, which differs to a significant extent from the generally
accepted Greek text, may go back to the original Aramaic version
written by Josephus." (Josephus' Jewish War and its Slavonic Version:
A Synoptic Comparison, by Henry Leeming, 2003, Brill; ISBN 9004114386)

"Josephus first wrote the history in his native Aramaic and circulated
it in the East, and then translated it into Greek for use in the Roman
Empire. Thus there is nothing at all improbable in the supposition
that Syriac-speaking Christians knew the de Bello Judaico of Josephus
in its original Aramaic form." (The Syro-Latin Text of the Gospels, by
Frederic Henry Chase, 1895).

Shlama,

Thank you for your answers.

I have downloaded the War of the Jews from the Codex Ambrosiano (It is
6 folios, 3 columns in each one) but I'm not skilled enough in aramaic
to read it :(

Only I can do is translate word by word, but in the end this is not
productive.

Besides the Codex Ambrosiano, is there others Peshitta manuscripts
where appears this book (War of the Jews) in aramaic?

Thank you again

Pilipos

Shlama Akhi Pilipos,

Aside from Codex Ambrosianus, I'm not aware of any public accessible
digital facsimile manuscripts of Peshitta Tanakh that contain
Josephus' writings.

Are you translating the text to compare it with English translations
from Greek? The word for word translation is something I would
encourage to start off with and I will be more than happy to assist
you in digitizing, archiving and publishing your translation if you
wish.

I haven't started on the translation of these books yet for the
Aramaic Jewish Bible - Pshitta Tanakh and they will probably be a long
time in coming.
