For years, I have closely followed American politics, and I have rarely seen a president generate as much controversy and division as Donald Trump. The issue was not limited to policies and decisions; it also extended to the language he used when dealing with journalists, media professionals, political opponents, and even some of America's allies.
Many journalists were subjected to ridicule, insults, and public disparagement by Trump. What I find particularly surprising is the limited professional solidarity shown in response to these repeated attacks. Journalism is the Fourth Estate, and defending a journalist who is being insulted is, in reality, a defense of the profession itself.
The old saying applies perfectly here: “When people feel immune from consequences, they abandon good manners.” Had there been a united and firm professional response to these repeated insults, they might not have continued in the same manner.
A journalist who fails to defend a colleague today may find himself standing alone tomorrow when he becomes the target of similar abuse. Solidarity among journalists is not a personal favor; it is a defense of professional dignity and of society’s right to know the truth.
Journalism is not a punching bag for politicians or people in power. A genuine journalist seeks to uncover facts and ask the questions that the public deserves to have answered. If you do not respect those who strive to bring the truth to the people, how can you claim to respect the truth itself?
Respecting journalists does not require agreeing with them. It simply means respecting their right to do their work without intimidation, humiliation, or attacks on their personal and professional dignity.
The problem extends beyond journalism. It has also affected America's image and its international relationships. In the view of many critics, Trump weakened confidence in the United States as a reliable ally through rhetoric that often relied on threats, pressure, and transactional politics, even toward friendly nations and long-standing partners.
His critics further argue that his policies and rhetoric damaged America's international standing and strained relations with numerous countries, organizations, and traditional allies. Some of his decisions were viewed as weakening institutions and programs that had long represented an important part of America's soft power.
During his presidency, the world witnessed a political style built more on polarization and division than on diplomacy and dialogue. Many observers believe that this approach damaged the image of the United States as a nation associated with institutions, the rule of law, and individual freedoms.
Among the most common criticisms directed at Trump was his constant focus on himself, his image, and his personal achievements. Many of his statements and actions appeared, in the eyes of his opponents, to reflect a strong sense of self-importance and a continuing desire to place himself at the center of attention, sometimes overshadowing the institutions of the state themselves.
Some of his remarks regarding Gulf countries and other nations also generated criticism because they were perceived as reflecting a philosophy of protection in exchange for payment rather than genuine partnership and mutual respect among nations.
Amer Al Azem says:
“A person who lacks self-respect cannot truly appreciate or respect others.”
Those who fail to respect people, independent professionals, women, or those who hold different opinions will find it difficult to build bridges of trust and mutual respect.
Americans have disagreed about Trump more than they have disagreed about almost any other modern president. In my view, his election was one of the greatest political mistakes in the history of the United States, and his policies and rhetoric contributed to the erosion of many of the positive values and images that had long been associated with America.
Great nations are built on respect, knowledge, dialogue, and strong institutions—not on insults, threats, and media spectacle. In the end, history does not remember the amount of noise leaders make; it remembers the impact they leave on their nations, their people, and the world.

منذُ سنواتٍ وأنا أتابعُ الحياةَ السياسيةَ الأمريكيةَ، ولم أشهدْ رئيسًا أثارَ هذا القدرَ من الجدلِ والانقسامِ كما فعلَ دونالد ترامب. ولم يقتصرِ الأمرُ على السياساتِ والقراراتِ، بل امتدَّ إلى اللغةِ المستخدمةِ في التعاملِ مع الصحفيينَ والإعلاميينَ والمعارضينَ وحتى بعضِ حلفاءِ الولاياتِ المتحدةِ.
لقد تعرَّضَ صحفيونَ كثيرونَ للإهانةِ والسخريةِ والانتقاصِ من قِبَلِ ترامب، وأستغربُ في كثيرٍ من الأحيانِ ضعفَ التضامنِ المهنيِّ مع هؤلاءِ الصحفيينَ. فالصحافةُ هي السلطةُ الرابعةُ، والدفاعُ عن الصحفيِّ الذي يتعرَّضُ للإهانةِ هو دفاعٌ عن المهنةِ نفسها.
ويصدقُ هنا المثلُ العربيُّ القائلُ: «مَن أَمِنَ العقوبةَ أساءَ الأدبَ.» فلو وُجدَ ردٌّ مهنيٌّ موحَّدٌ وحازمٌ على هذه الإساءاتِ، لما تكرَّرتْ بهذا الشكلِ.
فالصحفيُّ الذي لا يدافعُ اليومَ عن زميلِه الذي تعرَّضَ للإهانةِ قد يجدُ نفسَه وحيدًا غدًا عندما يتعرَّضُ هو للإهانةِ ذاتِها. إن التضامنَ بين الصحفيينَ ليس مجاملةً شخصيةً، بل دفاعٌ عن كرامةِ المهنةِ وعن حقِّ المجتمعِ في الوصولِ إلى الحقيقةِ.
والصحافةُ ليست كيسَ ملاكمةٍ لأحدٍ، وليست هدفًا سهلًا للسياسيينَ أو أصحابِ السلطةِ. فالصحفيُّ الحقيقيُّ يسعى إلى نقلِ الحقيقةِ وطرحِ الأسئلةِ التي يريدُ الجمهورُ معرفةَ إجاباتِها. وإذا كنتَ لا تحترمُ مَن يحاولُ نقلَ الحقيقةِ إلى الناسِ، فكيف يمكنُ أن تدَّعي احترامَ الحقيقةِ نفسها؟
إن احترامَ الصحفيينَ لا يعني الاتفاقَ معهم دائمًا، ولكنه يعني احترامَ حقِّهم في أداءِ عملِهم دونَ ترهيبٍ أو إهانةٍ أو انتقاصٍ من كرامتِهم الإنسانيةِ والمهنيةِ.
ولم تتوقفِ المشكلةُ عند حدودِ الصحافةِ، بل انعكستْ على صورةِ الولاياتِ المتحدةِ وعلاقاتِها الدوليةِ. فمن وجهةِ نظرِ كثيرينَ، ساهمَ ترامب في إضعافِ الثقةِ بالحليفِ الأمريكيِّ من خلالِ لغةِ التهديدِ والابتزازِ السياسيِّ والاقتصاديِّ التي استخدمها أحيانًا مع دولٍ صديقةٍ وحليفةٍ.
ويرى منتقدوه أن سياساتِه وخطابَه أضرَّا بمكانةِ الولاياتِ المتحدةِ الدوليةِ، وأسهما في توتيرِ علاقاتِها مع عددٍ من الدولِ والمنظماتِ والشركاءِ التقليديينَ. كما أدتْ بعضُ قراراتِه، في نظرِ معارضيه، إلى إضعافِ مؤسساتٍ وبرامجَ كانت تمثلُ جزءًا من القوةِ الناعمةِ الأمريكيةِ.
كما شهدَ العالمُ خلالَ عهدهِ خطابًا قائمًا على الاستقطابِ والانقسامِ أكثرَ من اعتمادِه على الدبلوماسيةِ والحوارِ. وقد رأى كثيرونَ أن هذا الأسلوبَ أسهمَ في تشويهِ الصورةِ التي ارتبطتْ طويلًا بأمريكا بوصفِها دولةَ مؤسساتٍ وقانونٍ وحرياتٍ.
ومن أكثرِ ما أثارَ الانتقاداتِ ضدَّه تركيزُه الدائمُ على شخصِه وصورتِه وإنجازاتِه الخاصةِ. فكثيرٌ من تصريحاتِه ومواقفِه بدتْ، في نظرِ خصومِه، انعكاسًا لنزعةٍ نرجسيةٍ ورغبةٍ مستمرةٍ في الظهورِ بمركزِ البطولةِ، حتى أصبحتْ شخصيتُه أحيانًا تطغى على مؤسساتِ الدولةِ نفسها.
كما أثارتْ بعضُ تصريحاتِه تجاهَ دولِ الخليجِ وغيرها من الدولِ انتقاداتٍ واسعةً بسببِ ما اعتبرَه البعضُ لغةً تقومُ على مبدأِ الحمايةِ مقابلَ الثمنِ، لا على الشراكةِ والاحترامِ المتبادلِ بين الدولِ.
ويقولُ عامرُ العظمِ:
«فاقدُ التقديرِ لنفسِه لا يُقدِّرُ ولا يعرفُ قدرَ الآخرينَ.»
فمَن لا يحترمُ الناسَ، ولا يحترمُ أصحابَ المهنِ الحرةِ، ولا يحترمُ المرأةَ، ولا يحترمُ المختلفينَ معه في الرأيِ، يصعبُ عليه أن يبنيَ جسورَ الثقةِ والاحترامِ مع الآخرينَ.
لقد اختلفَ الأمريكيونَ حولَ ترامب أكثرَ مما اختلفوا حولَ أيِّ رئيسٍ آخرَ في العصرِ الحديثِ. لكنني أرى أن انتخابَه كان من أكبرِ الأخطاءِ السياسيةِ في تاريخِ الولاياتِ المتحدةِ، وأن سياساتِه وخطابَه ساهما في تشويهِ كثيرٍ من القيمِ والصورِ الإيجابيةِ التي ارتبطتْ بأمريكا لعقودٍ طويلةٍ.
إن الدولَ العظيمةَ تُبنى بالاحترامِ والعلمِ والحوارِ والمؤسساتِ، لا بالإهاناتِ والتهديداتِ والاستعراضاتِ الإعلاميةِ. والتاريخُ في النهايةِ لا يتذكرُ حجمَ الضجيجِ الذي يصنعُه القادةُ، بل يتذكرُ ما تركوه من أثرٍ على أوطانِهم وشعوبِهم والعالمِ.
