A Letter to Professor Iris Shagrir, 
Rector of The Open University of Israel

Greetings of Knowledge, Culture, Achievement, and History,

I extend my greetings to you and, through you, to the free Israeli academics and intellectuals who reject occupation and support the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people.

I was pleased to recently observe the joining of hundreds of academics and staff members from your university to the networks of the Arab Translators Association (ARTA), adding to nearly ten thousand Israeli academics and thousands of Israeli professionals from various fields who participate in our international networks.

This development has greatly pleased me, as it confirms the strength, reach, and influence of ARTA as a global cultural and ethical movement that brings people together on the basis of knowledge, culture, and mutual respect, beyond divisions and conflicts.

I am pleased to inform you of the decision of the Executive Council of the Arab Translators Association to honor you and award you an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of your academic and professional achievements, and in appreciation of free Israeli and Jewish academics who believe in the values of justice, freedom, and human dignity.

We honor you as a human being and as an academic. Through this recognition, I wish to convey a message to free Israelis and Jews that I am a Palestinian belonging to an ancient people, an ancient history, and a rich culture, and that I believe in the power of thought, culture, and dialogue to create positive influence within Israeli society and beyond.

You have been selected from among hundreds of thousands of academics and professionals connected to our international networks. Therefore, I hope that you will view this recognition with deep appreciation and regard it as a cultural, ethical, and humanitarian act whose significance extends beyond individuals and institutions.

I recall here the timeless words:

“How can you enslave people when their mothers gave birth to them free?”

ברכות של ידע, תרבות, הישגים והיסטוריה,

אני מברך אותך, ובאמצעותך את האקדמאים ואנשי הרוח הישראלים החופשיים המתנגדים לכיבוש ותומכים בזכויותיו ובכבודו של העם הפלסטיני.

שמחתי להבחין לאחרונה בהצטרפותם של מאות אקדמאים ועובדים מאוניברסיטתכם לרשתות של אגודת המתרגמים הערבים (ARTA), ובכך הצטרפו לכעשרת אלפים אקדמאים ישראלים ולאלפי אנשי מקצוע ישראלים מתחומים שונים המשתתפים ברשתות הבינלאומיות שלנו.

הצטרפות זו שימחה אותי מאוד, שכן היא מעידה על עוצמתה, תפוצתה והשפעתה של ARTA כתנועה תרבותית ומוסרית עולמית המאחדת אנשים על בסיס ידע, תרבות וכבוד הדדי, מעבר למחלוקות ולעימותים.

אני שמח להודיע לך על החלטת הוועד המנהל של אגודת המתרגמים הערבים להוקיר אותך ולהעניק לך תואר דוקטור לשם כבוד כהערכה להישגייך האקדמיים והמקצועיים, וכן כהוקרה לאקדמאים ישראלים ויהודים חופשיים המאמינים בערכי הצדק, החירות וכבוד האדם.

אנו מוקירים אותך כאדם וכאקדמאית. באמצעות הוקרה זו אני מבקש להעביר מסר לישראלים וליהודים החופשיים: אני פלסטיני המשתייך לעם עתיק, להיסטוריה עתיקה ולתרבות עשירה, ואני מאמין בכוחם של המחשבה, התרבות והדיאלוג ליצור השפעה חיובית בתוך החברה הישראלית ומחוצה לה.

נבחרת מתוך מאות אלפי אקדמאים ואנשי מקצוע המחוברים לרשתות הבינלאומיות שלנו. לכן אני מקווה שתראי בהוקרה זו מעשה תרבותי, מוסרי ואנושי בעל משמעות החורגת מעבר לאנשים ולמוסדות.

וברצוני להזכיר כאן את האמרה הנצחית:

"כיצד אתם משעבדים בני אדם כאשר אמותיהם ילדו אותם בני חורין?"

تحية العلم والثقافة والإنجاز والتاريخ،

أحييك، وأحيي من خلالك الأكاديميين والمثقفين الإسرائيليين الأحرار الذين يرفضون الاحتلال ويناصرون حقوق الشعب الفلسطيني وكرامة الإنسان.

لقد سرّني أن ألاحظ مؤخرًا انضمام مئات الأكاديميين والعاملين من جامعتكم إلى شبكات جمعية المترجمين العرب (ARTA)، لينضموا إلى ما يقارب عشرة آلاف أكاديمي إسرائيلي وآلاف المهنيين الإسرائيليين من مختلف التخصصات المشاركين في شبكاتنا الدولية.

وقد أسعدني هذا الانضمام، لأنه يؤكد قوة وانتشار وتأثير ARTA بوصفها حركة ثقافية وأخلاقية عالمية تجمع البشر على أساس العلم والثقافة والاحترام المتبادل، بعيدًا عن الانقسامات والصراعات.

ويسعدني أن أبلغكم بقرار المجلس التنفيذي لجمعية المترجمين العرب تكريمكم ومنحكم الدكتوراه الفخرية تقديرًا لمسيرتكم الأكاديمية والمهنية، وتقديرًا كذلك للأكاديميين الإسرائيليين واليهود الأحرار الذين يؤمنون بقيم العدالة والحرية وكرامة الإنسان.

إننا نكرمكم بصفتكم إنسانة وأكاديمية، ومن خلال هذا التكريم أود أن أوصل رسالة إلى الإسرائيليين واليهود الأحرار مفادها أنني فلسطيني أنتمي إلى شعب عريق وتاريخ عريق وثقافة عريقة، وأنني أؤمن بقوة الفكر والثقافة والحوار في إحداث التأثير داخل المجتمع الإسرائيلي وخارجه.

لقد وقع الاختيار عليكم من بين مئات الآلاف من الأكاديميين والمهنيين المشتركين في شبكاتنا الدولية، ولذلك أرجو أن تنظروا إلى هذا التكريم بتقدير عميق، وأن تتعاملوا معه بوصفه فعلًا ثقافيًا وأخلاقيًا وإنسانيًا يحمل دلالات تتجاوز حدود الأشخاص والمؤسسات.

وأستحضر هنا المقولة الخالدة:

«متى استعبدتم الناس وقد ولدتهم أمهاتهم أحرارًا؟»
