Arab Academics
In 2009, nearly two years before the outbreak of the Syrian Revolution, the World Arab Translators Association (WATA) launched one of the most significant and difficult intellectual and humanitarian campaigns in its history: The Battle to Defend the Syrian People.
This campaign lasted for approximately nine months and became one of the longest and most challenging struggles undertaken by WATA since its establishment. Hundreds of members participated, including writers, poets, translators, academics, intellectuals, and activists from across the Arab world and beyond.
At that time, fear dominated public life. Speaking openly about Syrian affairs carried serious risks, and many preferred silence. Yet WATA chose a different path. Through words, articles, translations, poetry, public statements, and moral commitment, its members raised their voices in defense of the Syrian people and their right to dignity, freedom, and justice.
WATA included Syrian members with diverse political views. Some supported the Syrian government, while others opposed it. Intense debates continued for months, but the association remained committed to protecting freedom of expression and the right of all members to voice their opinions without exclusion or discrimination.
During this campaign, I personally faced pressure, threats, and attempts to persuade me to silence opposing voices. I was offered opportunities and privileges in exchange for removing government critics from WATA. I rejected those offers and remained committed to the principle that an intellectual organization must stand with human dignity rather than political interests.
This campaign was ahead of its time. It emerged before the Arab uprisings and before the Syrian Revolution itself. Looking back today, I believe it helped break the barrier of fear and contributed to raising the morale of many Syrians and Arabs who followed WATA’s activities and messages.
The price was high. WATA paid a heavy cost for its positions, and I personally endured professional, social, and personal consequences because of my commitment to defending human rights and freedom of expression. Yet retreat was never an option. We believed that the true intellectual stands with people, not with fear.
This campaign was part of a broader record of advocacy. WATA had previously led international efforts to challenge offensive definitions of Arabs in major dictionaries, including campaigns directed at Webster's Dictionary, where members worked to confront and remove derogatory descriptions and stereotypes that harmed the image of Arabs and Arab culture.
Today, I write these words as a testimony for history. My purpose is not personal recognition but the documentation of a period when speaking openly required courage and when silence was often the safer choice. We chose to speak when many were afraid to do so. We chose to stand with the Syrian people when doing so carried real consequences.
The Battle to Defend the Syrian People remains one of the most courageous and influential campaigns in WATA's history. It stands as a reminder that words matter, that intellectuals have responsibilities, and that defending human dignity is a duty that transcends politics and borders.

في عام 2009، أي قبل اندلاع الثورة السورية بنحو عامين، خاضت جمعية المترجمين العرب (واتا) واحدة من أهم وأصعب المعارك الفكرية والإنسانية في تاريخها، وهي معركة الدفاع عن الشعب السوري.
استمرت هذه المعركة ما بين سبعة وتسعة أشهر، ولا أذكر المدة بدقة بعد مرور كل هذه السنوات، لكنها كانت من أطول وأشد الحملات التي شهدتها واتا منذ تأسيسها. شارك فيها مئات الأعضاء من كتاب وشعراء ومترجمين وأكاديميين ومثقفين عرب وسوريين من مختلف الاتجاهات الفكرية والسياسية.
في ذلك الزمن كان الخوف سيد الموقف. كان الحديث العلني عن الشأن السوري محفوفًا بالمخاطر، وكانت أصوات كثيرة تفضل الصمت. ومع ذلك، رفعت واتا صوتها عاليًا دفاعًا عن الإنسان السوري وحقه في الكرامة والحرية والتعبير، وخاض أعضاؤها معركة يومية بالكلمة والمقال والترجمة والقصيدة والموقف الأخلاقي.
ضمّت واتا آنذاك أعضاء سوريين مؤيدين للنظام ومعارضين له، ودار داخل الجمعية حوار صعب ومكثف استمر لأشهر طويلة. وتمسكتُ شخصيًا بحق الجميع في التعبير عن آرائهم دون إقصاء أو تمييز، رغم الضغوط والتهديدات والإغراءات التي مورست من أجل إسكات هذه الحملة أو استبعاد بعض الأصوات المعارضة.
كانت هذه المعركة سابقة لزمنها، وجاءت قبل الأحداث الكبرى التي شهدتها المنطقة العربية بسنوات قليلة. ولذلك أعتقد أنها أسهمت في كسر حاجز الخوف، ورفعت الروح المعنوية لدى كثير من السوريين والعرب الذين كانوا يتابعون نشاط واتا ورسائلها ومواقفها.
لقد دفعت واتا ثمنًا باهظًا لمواقفها، كما دفعت أنا شخصيًا أثمانًا مهنية وإنسانية وشخصية بسبب هذا الانحياز الواضح إلى الإنسان وحقه في الحرية والكرامة. لكننا لم نتراجع، لأننا كنا نؤمن أن المثقف الحقيقي لا يقف إلى جانب السلطة أو المعارضة، بل يقف إلى جانب الإنسان أولًا.
ولم تكن هذه المعركة منفصلة عن تاريخ واتا في الدفاع عن العرب وصورتهم وحقوقهم. فقد خاضت الجمعية معارك دولية أخرى، من أبرزها معركة إزالة التعريفات المسيئة للعرب من قاموس "ويبستر"، حيث نجح أعضاء واتا وشركاؤها في الضغط من أجل مراجعة عدد من التعريفات والصور النمطية السلبية التي كانت تسيء إلى العرب وثقافتهم.
واليوم، وبعد مرور سنوات طويلة، أكتب هذه الشهادة للتاريخ، ليس بحثًا عن مجد شخصي، بل توثيقًا لمرحلة كان فيها الكلام مكلفًا، وكان الصمت أسهل بكثير من المواجهة. لقد اخترنا أن نتكلم عندما خاف الآخرون، وأن نقف مع الإنسان السوري عندما كان كثيرون يفضلون الابتعاد عن هذه القضية.
كانت معركة الدفاع عن الشعب السوري واحدة من أكثر المعارك شجاعة وتأثيرًا في تاريخ واتا، وستبقى جزءًا من الذاكرة الثقافية والإنسانية للجمعية ولجميع الذين شاركوا فيها.
