Primarily Primates - giving day for Apes -and the incomparable Jane GoodallPlease help Primarily Primates continue their life saving work.
To learn of the recent death of Jane Goodall was truly heartbreaking. A great humanitarian, primatologist, and conservationist, she was considered the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees, having studied the social and family interactions of wild chimps for more than 60 years. So soon after this sad day, less than one week later, on October 7, 2025, is Giving Day for Apes, an annual global day of giving to support Primarily Primates (PPI) and other wildlife sanctuaries protecting primates around the world. I think Jane would be proud. Please help this wonderful sanctuary by donating here — and this is why: As a board member of Friends of Animals, which has managed Primarily Primates sanctuary since 2007, I’ve had the honor of meeting many of these wonderful animals in person. However, unlike the ones Goodall studied, these chimps and other primates have suffered greatly at the hands of humans, having been rescued from biomedical research, entertainment, and the exotic pet trade. Primarily Primates was founded in 1978, making it the first primate sanctuary in North America, and the first to rescue chimpanzees requiring lifetime care following medical research. It is also the sanctuary home for lemurs, monkeys, baboons, exotic birds, and even some horses -- all rescued from research labs, zoos, circuses, the entertainment industry, and inappropriate homes - most victims of physical and psychological abuse. KOKO- This handsome guy was a survivor of the primate pet trade - suffering from psychological trauma caused by his isolation and mistreatment. This is some background about this precious boy. Through sheer luck, Koko eventually found Primarily Primates and lived a wonderful life there until he died a few years ago. I have a Christmas ornament that he painted. Please take a look at the PPI website and see the wonderful work they do for these precious animals. Consider sponsoring one - a chimp, a baboon, a lemur. I sponsor Jack, a baboon, with a sense of humor. MUST SEE: Terrific video — Watch the chimps having a great time at their watermelon party From their website: “This year, we will be raising money for an innovative habitat for our newest chimp residents, Herbie, Emma, Jackson, and CJ, who we rescued from a shuttered Oregon sanctuary. It will feature aerial tunnels, two domes, a 1600-square-foot bedroom with air conditioning and heating, and large windows. There will even be space to accommodate more chimps we rescue in the future.” Please consider donating to help these animals. Click on this link to donate: It will take you to the Giving Day for Apes - Primarily Primates link. As Primarily Primates says, “With dozens of captive chimpanzees needing rescue in the United States alone, PPI needs help from supporters like you to continue this lifesaving work. Together, we can create a better future for all great apes.” Thank you. BUBBA - a character. He is a rescue from the biomedical research and entertainment industries and has been at PPI since 2005. He loves to play with shoes and is a natural acrobat. I loved meeting him. |
