The following is a disturbing story.  It almost has the tone of a drama in which innocence [or good] is attacked by malevolence [or evil].

 

This is the story of an exceptional rescue shelter in Delhi, New York, Angel's Gate, that serves as end-of-life hospice, hospital, rehab center and shelter for countless dogs and cats, and now must face a relentless assault by the highly controversial and relentlessly self-promoting group, PETA [People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.]  This facility does such noble work; serving as a shelter for some of the most needy. the sickly, the disabled, the discarded. 

 

Angel's Gate is asking for one of two things.  One, they would very much like to continue the operation of this facility.  For that to be possible, money is needed.  Two, in the event that the facility closes, adopters will be needed for the dogs and cats [ and possibly the three horses]..  For information about adoption, Angel's Gate will need to be contacted concerning which critters are available, etc.

 

Read the string of notes in this e-mail.  The first outlines the general problems while the remainder are testimony to the good work of Angel's Gate.

 

The facts stand as presented by the various writers who share in concert the passion to save this wonderful facility. Some minor editing for smoothness was done by me.  

 

I take the presentations offered on behalf of Angel's Gate to be true and accurate.  I assume that the harsh measures alleged to have been taken by PETA to be true, based upon a pattern of such behaviors that have been shown to have occurred in the past. 

 

Please save Angel's Gate, this monument to the good a single person can undertake thanks to a shared belief of like-minded people.

There has been an unrelenting effort by PETA to eliminate animal shelters/rescues.  In particular PETA has opposed the rescue facilities and shelters that take in discarded and abandoned  cats and dogs; animals who have been neglected and abused or are unwanted because of their age or their infirmities.  PETA has worked tirelessly to OPPOSE the rescue of animals who are seen as disposable by so many of our fellow citizens, for PETA chooses to see these helpless and innocent creatures as a blight on society.

 

Angel's Gate Sanctuary, like others who have made it their mission to help these unfortunate creatures, has been subjected to spies, fabricated undercover "exposes" and legal action motivated by PETA's long term strategy to see the elimination of all cats and dogs who are kept as pets.

 

Contrary to popular belief, PETA OPPOSES NO KILL, destroying  90%-95% of all the animals that have the misfortune to wind up in their "shelters".  In spite of slick propaganda, PETA and those who share their beliefs, do not support the No Kill movement.

 

Sadly, PETA has profited well from the publicity of their "exposes".

 

As a consequence, Angel's Gate is in danger of closing down.  The consequences for the creatures that are being cared for are disastrous:  More than 200 animals who live there are at risk of losing the only place that will care for them and give them the help they need. 

 

Susan Marino, the dynamic force behind Angel's Gate, is a caring, dedicated person who has devoted her life to helping these animals. She has been subjected to an onslaught of threats and abuse, coming from those who have never even met her or visited Angel's Gate but have taken at face value the accusations, still not proven in court, that have been made against her.

 

She is not a hoarder, not an abuser, but as the saying goes "once maligned, how do I get my good name and reputation back?"

Angel's Gate is a hospice and Rehab center for animals.

 

It does fabulous work. As a result of a so called undercover investigation in which a PETA employee posed as a volunteer, PETA was able to get a DA in upstate NY to press charges of animal cruelty against the owner and operator of this organization, Susan Marino.

 

She was even accused of being an animal hoarder. If one were to examine the evidence which is a biased video taken by the "volunteer" with subtitles added ( really!) and a report by this "investigator", an intelligent person would have to laugh at what triggered this mess.

 

I have personally been there and brought 6 cats to this facility.

 

I saw every part of the place and there is no evidence of any wrong doing by Susan Marino, a former nurse. Ms Marino runs the facility like a mini hospital with its own ICU and regular trips to a Vet.

Although all these charges were brought over one year ago, amazingly no animal was ever removed from the place. This almost underlines the fact that not even the DA or PETA think those animals are in any danger. They know very well that the publicity of all these animals being removed with no place to go would cause an uproar.

 

This seems to be, in my view, more of a publicity stunt for PETA and it is damn annoying. Keep in mind that PETA makes a fortune in donations and it is not clear what their mission really is. If you would write to PETA to ask about Angel's Gate they send in reply a "canned" email to anyone making an inquiry.

As a result of PETA's actions. Angel's Gate donations are at a standstill since there are people out there that believe anything they read.  Now Angel's Gate - this hospice, hospital, shelter - is in danger of having to close their doors.

 

Susan Marino is looking for people who are willing to adopt these special animals.

 

I can tell you that there is no other place like this anywhere. In nearly 30 years of practicing law I have never seen such injustice. Please send this message out. If you can help, please do.

This was sent to me this morning. Please pass along to as many people as you can think of.

 

As many of you know, I too visited there unannounced and did not see any sign of abuse, cruelty, filth or neglect. Founder and director Susan Marino took me all over the property and inside the house, letting me look as I chose.  There wasn't even a hint of odor from the animals. Susan is a very unique person in the fact that she created this organization herself, leaving her job as Pediatric hospice nurse.

 

The animals are safe and move about as freely as they physically can. Although some dogs have cerebral palsy, paralysis, blindness, missing limbs, neurological disorders and among other things, one is a quadriplegic, Susan's motto was to keep them moving so the muscles do not atrophy and cause further damage.

 

In addition to the dogs, she houses 160 cats that have been dropped off for some reason or another, five exotic birds she brought up from Long Island when she moved to Delhi, one rescued squirrel and three horses.

 

This is a terrible and tragic thing to happen to Angel's Gate and all because of PETA which allegedly is a responsible animal welfare agency. I am baffled why PETA would enter her facility undercover, fabricate charges, then turn around and make charges against her.

 

Why try to shut down a wonderful animal rescue and hospice and put these helpless animals in jeopardy? I will never understand  but I would never support PETA based on this tragedy.

The anti-cat American Bird Conservancy's George Fenwick will bring their 17 year-old anti-cat campaign to ABC's 20/20 tonight. Kerrie Anne Lloyd, who began a pilot project with National Geographic to find out what effect cats have on the environment, will have a researcher on the show as well. Lloyd used “kitty cams” to follow 55 pet cats in suburban Athens, Georgia. “The most surprising thing found is that the majority of the house cats weren't hunters,” said Dr. Lloyd. Only 44 percent of the cats in the study stalked, chased or killed other animals during the day. Among the cats who did hunt, the most popular prey was also surprising. “The birds were a minority of the prey items,” Dr. Lloyd said. The cats most commonly caught reptiles, something that other studies had missed because the cats either ate the reptiles or left them behind at the kill site. Lloyd said they studied pet cats and not stray or feral cats. She also said she did not want to extrapolate wildlife captures beyond the study. But that is exactly what American Bird Conservancy (ABC) did immediately with a press release slamming cats. Always quick to continue their 17-year old witch-hunt on cats, ABC had this to say about the study: “If we extrapolate the results of this study across the country and include feral cats, we find that cats are likely killing more than 4 billion animals per year, including at least 500 million birds. Cat predation is one of the reasons why one in three American bird species are in decline,” said Dr. George Fenwick, President of ABC. Our feral cats (our beloved domestic cats gone wild) need your help and support. If you can help us spread the word that the numbers these groups use are exaggerated, we can get the message out that ABC is grasping at straws and misconstruing research. Lloyd even told CBS News that “Cats aren’t as bad as biologists thought.” If ABC and their "alliance" wins and tries to remove aka "kill" every feral cat we will be back in the dark ages. Cats keep rodent populations in check. Right now a child in Colorado is fighting the bubonic plague, which wiped out millions of people in the Middle Ages. The plague was caused by out-of-control rodent populations, when cats were killed and nearly wiped out during the original witch hunts. Every time cats have been removed from islands, the rats took over, bred out-of-control and damaged the very birds they were trying to save. So it's NOT only about cats. Predation on birds by cats is far less than they state, and predation keeps bird populations healthy and in check. Cats kill the old, the sick, the weak and the young....leaving whole populations to continue breeding. Please contact ABC News and 20/20 and let them know that ABC (American Bird Conservancy) has an anti-cat agenda, despite repeated research showing they exaggerate the numbers of birds killed by cats, and that many other factors that do kill large numbers of birds are not given nearly as much attention. Background: The HSVMA and the Kislak Family Fund joined with The Humane Society of the United States in 2008 to provide $40,000 to help initiate the HAARTS program, after Dr. Paula Kislak, a 1984 alumna of the UF CVM consulted with interested students and faculty. An additional $30,000 was donated in 2009.

New info to give to these "shelters" to save lives!

In 2010, the ASPCA took in roughly 140 million dollars and adopted out only 3,389 animals. That is a stunning $41,000 per animal saved. During the same time period, a New York No Kill shelter and sanctuary took in $635,000 and saved 2,932 animals. That is $216 per animal —or the equivalent of the ASPCA saving 645,040 animals. A No Kill animal control shelter in New York took in $356,000 and saved 2,315 animals. That is $154 per animal—or the equivalent of the ASPCA saving 910,353 animals—almost 1 million animals.
