hello,

for quite some time now, perhaps as much as a year, i have problems with aquamacs crashing during normal usage.  this is version 3.3 running on mac os x sierra, fully up to date.  one sure-fire way to trigger it is to close the only open window, but there are many circumstances in which i am just doing something ordinary and, bang, it crashes.  i have submitted numerous bug reports using the built-in mechanism, but so far nothing has happened to resolve the issue.  i wonder whether anyone might be working on this problem?  it is serious enough that i may be forced to abandon aquamacs after many many years of using it as my text editor.

thanks.

Hi Bob,

I have reviewed some of your crash reports. One of them appears to be connected to memory (mis)management for images displayed in the toolbar.

This leads me to ask whether you have installed and use any packages, any special major modes perhaps -?

The problem is likely to be an issue with GNU Emacs rather than with Aquamacs specifically. Also, note that crashes are difficult to debug when there is no recipe that would allow a programmer to reproduce the problem.

Best,
David

PS.: Suggest subscribing to aquamacs-devel or Emacs on OS X mailing lists.

Bob,

I’m going to try to keep the conversation on the mailing list to see if someone else might want to contribute to a solution.

I am just updating AUCTeX, and GNU Emacs has made some progress as well (although I know of no specific bug that was fixed w.r.t. this problem).
I would suggest that you update your Aquamacs from http://aquamacs.org/nightlies.shtml in a few days to get these latest changes.

At the same time, I would want to know which mode is in use when the Toolbar crash happens.

Thanks,
David

And I use sml-mode for code, but really these don’t seem like they should be problematic, and I have been using them for many years.

You can tell from the subject line in the e-mail that is generated after the crash.

If you are seeing crashes due to different issues, we need to make sure we do not chase different things at once.

By the way - I don’t get many crashes, nor do most users, so there must be something different about what you have installed on your system, or what you do with Aquamacs. Not that you’re doing something wrong, but to fix the bug, it would be good to get at what that is.

good to know, because for me it’s close to unusable now on both my macbook pro and my imac desktop, which are configured pretty much identically.

i wonder what it might be? i’m happy to do a fresh install, but i think i’ve tried that, at least at the level of downloading the package and clicking on it.

I'm not getting a *ton* of crashes, but I'm getting them more frequently
than I would like. I'm also seeing them on window closes, particularly
from use of the "red button." Unfortunately, I have not been able to
get them to recur regularly. If there's anything you'd recommend for
tracking this, please let me (us) know, and we can emplace relevant
information gathering....

Also, I'll move to the nightlies....

Thanks!
