Contenderdied in January 2014, just short of his 30th birthday, but not before he proved himself to be the most influential son of Calypso II and one of the greatest of the stallions to descend from Cor de la Bryre.

Contender won the 1987 Adelheidsdorf stallion performance test with a jumping index of 146.6. He went on to be the 1-b main premium vice-champion in Oldenburg on the basis of his excellent first crop of foals.

It is interesting how Contender came to be standing at the beginning of his career in Oldenburg. In an interview with Etienne van Muylem in the December 2007/January 2008 Z Magazine, the Manager of the Holstein Verband, Norbert Boley explained:

Contender was in his time, one of the most sought after stallions in Germany. He has produced 127 approved sons, and 59 state premium mares including Riconda who won the Elite Mare Show at Rastede in 1993. As of 2006, in Holstein, Oldenburg, Hannover and Rhineland, Contender had produced 782 registered mares, 498 successful offspring in the sport.

At the Holsteiner Stallion Show in Neumnster in 2001, several stallions, including Contender, contracted Equine Virus Arteritis (EVA). As a result, Contender was moved from the Elmshorn stallion depot to the very traditional stallion station at Haselau, from whence his dam line originated.

Contender dominated German breeding values for many years now and produced a number of top stallions, including Contendro (premium stallion in the approval of 1999, and winner of the performance test at Adelheidsdorf the following year).

We own a daughter of contender. She is a beautiful horse that does everything. My daughter rides her in hunter jumper competitions and she is excellent in dressage. Is contender in good health?

Sowing: Direct sow Contender green bush bean seeds outside at least 1 week after the last frost, since beans are quite sensitive to cold. They should be planted in rich, well drained soil with full sun exposure. If you have never planted beans in your garden before, treat the seeds with a powder inoculant to allow the process of nitrogen fixation to begin. Sow the seeds 1" deep and 3" apart, in rows 2'-3' apart, and press down the earth above them for good soil contact. These seeds rot easily in wet soil, so do not over water them. Germination should take place 7-12 days after planting. For companion planting benefits, plant bush beans near carrots, cucumbers, or corn; avoid planting them near onions.

Growing: After germination, maintain soil moisture; contender bush beans have shallow roots, and need water at least once a week if the weather is dry. Mulching the plants helps conserve moisture and discourages weeds.

Harvesting: Expect your first beans about ten weeks after germination. Daily harvesting improves production; for best flavor and tenderness, pick the beans when they are no larger than a pencil in thickness, or from 4-8" long. Serve or preserve the same day you harvested them for the freshest taste.

Seed Saving: Near the end of the growing season, allow the beans to dry completely on the vine; the pods will be light brown, and the seeds will rattle inside. Remove the seeds from the pods. After the Contender green bush bean seeds are completely dry, store them in a cool, dry place for up to a year.

I planted these beans late in August last year. I chose these because of their short maturity time. In about 6 weeks from planting we were harvesting. These beans were stringless and very high quality. I am planting these again this spring.

WTT intends to have up to six Star Contender and up to 14 Contender events as part of the WTT Contender Series each calendar year, with fans getting their first look at the WTT Contender Series in the upcoming Middle East Hub in Doha, Qatar.

Each WTT Star Contender event organiser will have the opportunity to determine their singles qualifying draw size from three pre-determined draw sizes: 32, 48 or 64, while doubles qualifying is fixed at 16-pairs.

WTT events will also be permitted to provide one of its allocated event wildcards to an additional Top 20 player, giving fans the opportunity to see their favourite Top 20 players competing at WTT events and being challenged by the contenders.

Each WTT Star Contender event will be permitted a maximum of four players from the Top 20 at the time of the entry deadline. These players will be accepted into an event based on the following criteria:

Each WTT event will implement a National Entry Restriction (NER) designed to ensure that as many players from as many national associations are provided with the opportunity to participate in events and earn rankings points and prize money. This also provides fans with the opportunity to see more players from around the world competing in WTT events.

WTT has made structural changes to the way that WTT events will be implemented. These will reinvigorate competitions by making them fairer, more exciting, more competitive and to give fans the opportunity to see more of their favourite players in action in the main draw.

I have an older TC Contender...it's not a G2, so I guess it's the earlier model. I have a .22 Hornet barrel on it, that will handle small game and varmints. I'm looking to purchase a larger caliber barrel that would fill the bill for larger game...up through deer, and give me longer range at the same time. I'm thinking nothing smaller than .223, and probably something like .30-30, .30-06, .35 rem, or maybe a pistol round like a .357 Mag...and a 14" barrel.

Now comes the confusion! I've spent countless hours on specific forums trying to educate myself on exactly what barrels will fit my earlier Contender. Some say this is very restrictive, on the earlier model Contenders. Others say many of the barrels will fit the older Contenders. I know some barrels have a one piece bolt lock, and some have a split bolt lock. Which ones will fit my early model Contender...I want a longer barrel, so will a Super 14" barrel fit my gun. What is the difference in a regular 14" barrel and a "Super 14" barrel? Any help is greatly appreciated.

As for the split lock/one piece lock, I'd have to go dig mine out and check, but I "think" that all of mine use the single piece. If I remember right, I did quite a bit of research and found that the split lugs came along as TC started doing the Easy Open conversions on the G1 Contender frames (NOT advised to send it in).

WK05, thanks for your reply. I can't remember, but I think my contender is around a 1979 year model. Mine does not have the "easy open" frame, as the pivot pin is all the way forward. If it's closed with any force or speed, it's a bear to get to open! More questions...there seems like there always is...can the longer barrels (16" or longer) be put on the earlier TC Contenders to make a carbine in rifle calibers? Some have said that the "split locking lugs" would make my Contender open much easier...any thoughts on that?

I see a ton of barrels, in all calibers, on eBay. But, I'm worried that some of the hotter calibers, like the 220 Swift, 22-250, and some others may have been shot out...especially if hot hand loads have been shot through them. Have you encountered any TC Contender barrels that were shot out?

I was hoping that I could find a barrel locally...that I could actually put on my frame, to make sure it would fit properly. How do you tell if the barrels don't fit properly...will the gun just not lock up, or is there something else to look for? Thanks again for your help.

Mike hit the nail on the head for the caliber selection. I think a .30-30 barrel, or any of the magnum handgun calibers should do the trick with a longer barrel length. Also, check out JDJ Barrels if you really want to make it something unique. Lots of caliber choices, and they'll make it to your specs, and ensure it will be safe with your frame.
