Hello,

I got the update to KitKat (Android 4.4) on my Nexus 7 (2012 edition) and I discovered that APV PDF viewer cannot find or view files on it.

I stored all my PDF files under /storage/emulated/0/Documents. When I use Adobe PDF Viewer, I can see and view the files. When I open APV PDF viewer to the same directory, it shows nothing.

I then used a File Manager to send a file to APV PDF view but it did not show the file. Below is the logcat I get:

=====

Is this a permissions issue? I think there is an option to allow apps access to the card.

I believe you are right. This may be a permissions issue. According to [ http://developer.android.com/about/versions/android-4.4.html ]:

"If you have previously published an app for Android, be aware that your app might be affected by changes in Android 4.4.

If your app reads from external storage...

Your app can not read shared files on the external storage when running on Android 4.4, unless your app has the READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission. That is, files within the directory returned by getExternalStoragePublicDirectory() are no longer accessible without the permission. However, if you need to access only your app-specific directories, provided by getExternalFilesDir(), then you do not need the READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission."

There is a developer option to turn that off on your device, I think.

I've checked. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be an Developer options related to file permissions.

For me I cannot view files as well as cannot open pdfs(app crashes ) . Other pdf viewer/file Explorer apps work fine. I think this app needs an update to make it compatible with kitkat since many other users also have the same issue. I'm having nexus 7(2012) and just updated to kitkat. Before this update the app worked properly.

I have come to find that if you trouble shoot like car electrics pull one fuse at a time until you find the problem ,it isn't blowing fuses for that is too easy to figure out, a component that is acting up but which one is it that causes the battery to drain when nothing is on? One fuse at a time until all of a sudden ! Its working again, go and stop some of the new that is, after I updated KitKat I was on top off and stopped the update and only let load what I needed and the rest can be updated one at a time, this way if one of has a bug I will know right away and go in and fix it or kill it mark it and try the next , hopefully this sum what helps ,patients is the key don't let it get you frustrated,

The issue is that Google saw fit to require apps to specifically get
permission to read from storage. This breaks apps that worked fine in
previous releases. It's an easy fix given the source code...

Can we expect a fix soon. I really like this app and don't want to hunt for a similar app with all the similar features. Since its a free ware, I can't demand anything but I just want to know if anyone is working on a fix so that I can decide whether to wait for a few days or start hunting a new app or try the harder path and try to go back to 4.3. I really just need a pdf viewer. The file browser is just an add-on that can be addressed later if it is difficult. If this gets fixed I don't mind contributing since I really did like this app

Any help or update on this would be great. I did donate as I love this app but I can't use it right now on my Nexus 7 with 4.4.

I've found a work-around for this until it can be resolved on Kit-Kat.

Upload any PDFs you want to view to Google Drive. Then, in the Google Drive Android App, select APV PDF Viewer to view your PDFs.

You can save the PDF files in Offline View in Google Drive, so you don't need a constant network connection.

In the meantime, I suggest the app description in Play Story, etc. should be updated to note this problem on KitKat.

Or you can move your PDFs into
Android/data/cx.hell.android.pdfviewpro/files (or pdfview, depending
on which version you have) on your SD card. Then no permission should
be needed to access them. You'll need to create the directories.

Thank you very much for the update. It works for me in nexus 7(2012 model) running KitKat 4.4. I'll use it for a few months before updating to pro. I downloaded the free version xx_all.apk. Not sure of the other files Thanks once again.

Indeed, current versions of APV appear to work fine under KitKat. Any chance we could get them pushed to F-Droid as well? The latest version available there is still 0.4.0.

I second the request to push version 4.1 to fdroid. I think apv is currently the best pdf viewer for android out there.
