Hello, Tech SIG,
I have been approached by a fellow APTA member who was asking from help from the experts in the Tech SIG:

Here is what she has described:  "We have the 1st of 6 short PowerPoint presentations (7 slides) and are specifically looking for help with formatting across different mobile and MAC/PC computers and adding voice-over so the storytelling component is not lost, but we are also very open to ideas that will improve the learner's experience."

I am hoping we would be able to give her a solution.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Steve

I would avoid using the powerpoint voice over, as it doesn't always work when posted to different formats.  But there are other products, such as present.me, camtasia, etc that will let you voice over and turn it into a video that is more easily viewed on multiple formats.

Hello.
As Beth suggested, we have also had good experience with Camtasia.

In addition, we have had good experience with PPT voice over and then converting the 'loop' to an .mp4 format. Another option that worked in the past is to utilize the GoToMeeting software, and 'record' our video and audio presentation of our slides...and then converting the output file to either WMV or mp4.

Also, I would encourage one to think about the planned location for posting the files...and who the intended audience is. In other words, will this be an internal intranet for employees? Or, will they post them on their own 'YouTube' channel? Will this be for 'public' consumption (which might mean the YouTube format is worth further review? Will they be using a Learning Management System and tracking employees or students? Within our company, we are currently using Moodle which is a 'free' (meaning open source) software. Regardless, each posting environment has their own size requirements and access needs.

Regarding YouTube, I truly encourage each of us to view a recent presentation by Matt DeBole where he talks about APTA Conferences and our TechSIG. This can be found at and is a good example of what can be shared in 6 and a half minutes and follows the format of another good set of YouTube video's called ASAP Science. Matt, if you read this, IMHO you did a Great job!

Check it out for yourself:

I have found that using Quick Time’s screen recording is very useful.  Very easy to record your use through any program that you have on your desktop.  I usually edit it using iMovie on a Mac, if needed.

You can always host the videos on Vimeo.  This is a fairly cheap way of having videos out there, plus getting the use of tracking the numbers of views, etc.

Thanks,

Jody
