Hi,

If you'd like to take part in a beta test of an upcoming Android app,
please send an email before Wednesday 2026-05-20 to:

android-f...@aprs.fi

I'll take in the first 20 or so. Thanks!

Afternoon,

I’m working on an iOS app that functions as an offline tracker.
However, my tester has inquired about aprs.fi access. I’m hesitant to
add this feature, because you already have an application that
provides that functionality and is well-integrated with your servers.

"Eventually," this will be a paid app. However, I’m more concerned
about access. Should I require all users who want access to obtain
their own key? Alternatively, should I use a single global key for all
users using the application?

For the revenue, I would probably have to add that into the base price
or as an add-on, and then that money gets dedicated to your split and
server upkeep.

Thoughts?

The API may only be used by applications which are free to use and
available to the general public. If you wish to use the API for a
paid-for application, please contact me and give a suggestion on a
revenue sharing model.

Despite what the API documentation page says, I'm probably not at this
time interested in supporting 3rd party paid applications on the aprs.fi
API.

It's very likely that there would be feature demand for features which
place more load on the servers (search, bounding-box queries), and it
might be difficult for me to find motivation to support those, since the
applications would possibly be competing with my own apps.

So, I'd recommend you to run your own backend if you need one. It's good
to have it in your own control, after all.

I understand since there seems to be a lot of
traffic already on your servers. I will continue with my plan to let your application exist on its own and if people really want those features, they can use your products.
