Hello;

I am Buğra, TA1ANW de Turkey. We had a recent discussion in out local APRS group. I'd like to ask about a few details:

1) Someone that we could not identify (probably a Turkish ham) is posting POTA icons recently. A large number of icons are being displayed and it causes performance issues in old (and mostly mobile) devices. Some other person (probably another Turkish ham) is using the same icons (with the same names) to "cancel" and move the icons.

2) Again, recently someone started feeding the ADS-B data to the map. Here is an example: https://aprs.fi/info/a/PNC1A

We would like to know if this non-amateur usage is allowed on aprs.fi. If not, can we act to remove these icons from the map?

We don't know the current stance of the aprs.fi so we wanted to get your view and information. Thanks for your precious time and response in advance.

Hi Buğra CANATA,

1) posting POTA sites on aprs is a common issue and should not perform any problem if the time interval of this objects/items are well managed. The Turkish ham moving them is clearly on the wrong with his behavior.

2)ADS-B data? are this planes? Non Amateur usage of APRS (and APRS-IS) is forbidden.

I also see boats and trains (even buses) from other tracking systems being pulled into aprs.fi, which I know can be filtered out, but it really is not aprs.

Mike,

If by boats you mean AIS ship location tracking, that's a thing that can indeed be shared on the aprs.fi website and can be filtered out. I have never seen trains or busses on the site nor am I aware of tracking systems for these that the site allows you to share location data from (unless a licensed ham radio operator may happen to be aboard and is holding an APRS-capable HT against a window with the symbol set to train or bus, or merely someone using an incorrect symbol.) Care to provide any examples?
