Hello.

I’m trying to overlay a bike race route onto APRS.fi and am wondering:

a) Does APRS.fi support importing a KML file?

b) And if so, how can this be done?

Research I’ve done:

1) I found some information on the web that indicated it was possible to import a KML file (e.g., from Google My Maps) into APRS.fi.  The instructions roughly go like this.

  1. Create KML: Create a map in Google My Maps and export it as a KML file.
  2. Host the File: Host the .kml file on a public web server (e.g., GitHub Gist, Dropbox).
  3. Embed in aprs.fi: Add the URL parameter to your aprs.fi address bar.

Example: https://aprs.fi/#!mt=roadmap&kml=http://yoururl.com/map.kml.

Note: If aprs.fi is loaded via https, the KML URL must also be https.

I tried this (using Dropbox), but couldn’t get it to work.

2) However, on the APRS.fi Google Group, I found this:

Is it possible to use an overlay of a race route on the APRS.FI real time map?

Working a marathon in a few weeks and would like to overlay the race route on the APRS.FI real time map. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I used to have great success with overlays using kml files, but that capability went away when APRS.fi went through a major update.  I was hoping that feature, or some other method of overlays, would become available.  Is that still a possibility in the near future, or unlikely at this point?  73 - Jim - Ad4eb

KML overlay was previously available, while aprs.fi was using Google Maps.

After the Leaflet integration it has not been available, unfortunately; I
did not get around to implementing KML loading in Leaflet. Sorry about
that.

I should re-do that part some time.

Understood. Thank you for your prompt reply!

While providing logistics and safety support to a local bike rally with over 100 riders, our ham radio club would appreciate and benefit from having the KML import feature re-implemented, if possible.

Thank you for your great product!!

One thing you can do if you don't mind using Google Earth as your user interface is to create an aprs.fi network link in Google Earth and import your KML into Google Earth as well. See the instructions for doing this on the aprs.fi website.

Bob:

Are these the aprs.fi website instructions to which you were referring?

A couple questions:

  1. Will this work on the web version of Google Earth, or do I need to install Google Earth on my local machine?
  2. Do I have to be logged in to aprs.fi?
  3. Where can I find the “Temporary Places” referred to in #1 above?
  4. I couldn’t find “APRS tracking” anywhere, either…?
  5. Where can I  find “X points of Y stations” in APRS, referenced in #3 above?

Thanks!!
