Hi Heikki,

I am thinking of using my Wifi only iPad for an APRS display/tracker in my motorhome using the APRS.fi app. The Wifi only iPads don't have GPS and does not use the GPS from a tethered iPhone. I have a XGPS150A bluetooth GPS receiver. Would it be possible for the APRS.fi app to add support for GPS bluetooth receivers, such as the XGPS150A?

Thank you.

Best Regards,
Matthew (NB0X)

By a quick look it's unclear what kind of support I'd need to include.
Do you have pointers to documentation for developers?

The list on https://gps.dualav.com/gpsapps is quite big, so I'm suspecting
the XGPS150A is supposed to work with iOS in general, and apps would get
the position data from the operating system, as if the device would have
internal GPS. In this case the app doesn't really need to know about the
GPS being external. Have you tried if it works?

With other apps which work with the XGPS150A, have you had to manually
tell them which external GPS to use?

If there's anything special to do, I'd need to purchase a device to test
with, and spend quite a lot of time with it. If there's a lot of users
needing this, then... maybe. If it's just a few users, it's probably not
worth the ~$90 (+ VAT and customs work here) and a few days of work, as
there are some other features to do first which would benefit a larger
user base.

Hello Matthew, group,

It’s not often that I can contribute, but let’s try :)

Have you tried it? My understanding is that any app accessing GPS data will get it from the iOS operating system, whether it’s from an on-board device (like an device with the cell modem/GPS chip) or from any device that provides GPS data through Bluetooth.

I can’t try because I use a cell iPad, but when I pair my Dual XGPS 160 any app that uses GPS data uses the XGPS160, and if it’s not paired, it uses the on-board chip. There are no settings in iOS or any app I use to select the data source.

I’d give it a try if you haven’t.

Thank you. It does seem that the APRS.fi app is receiving GPS data from the XGPS150A once paired.
