It used to work, and now I can't get it to work.

Hi Kevin,

Same for me. Used to have a Maidenhead grid overlay which is not shown
any more.

Just bumping this topic, I don't see a definitive answer was ever given. Our ARES group is supporting a bike tour on Long Island NY next Sunday. In the past we put the route maps overlaying aprs.fi using the ?kml querystring the the URL,

Now that APRS.fi is switched to OpenStreets / Leaflet is this capability officially deprecated?

I open the URL's I prepared last year but the I see the routes no longer display. I see it is possible to feed aprs.fi station positions directly into Google Earth and view it there (along with any routes). That's pretty clever work around, but Google Earth does not have a simple map view, only the satellite style.

Do we have any other options?

Thanks in advance,

The issue was when they switched from Google maps to open street maps it broke. Not sure if they will fix it in time for you.  I’m hoping it is fixed by December. If I was smart enough, I’d help the programmer.  But I’m not.

I am another person that is missing the ability to overlay KML files.  We used APRS.fi to display our planned routes while operating mobile in State QSO Parties here in the states.  During the contests, amateurs operators could follow us during the contest, and know when we would be entering a new country and where we going next. The county lines were in the KML files along with the route.  I like the fact that new system already has county lines shown, but really miss not having the planned route displayed.  There are many other mobile contesters hoping for the KML overlay ability to return, but we all understand that it is not an easy fix.

Thanks for all your hard work Heikki, you are appreciated.

Thanks, I figured as much. Too bad there isn't a way for each user of aprs.fi web pages use their own Google account / API key to download the maps so the developer isn't stuck with a huge bill.

The bike tour was yesterday so we had to make do with alternatives. There are some options, but none as simple as when the KML files were directly supported. We set up one computer to use the APRS.fi KML feed into Google Earth and used Google Earth to show the route KML's. That works fine! But Google Earth is a bit of a data hog and we had limited cell coverage. Plus, while it give a nice view, that view is not too friendly for street mapping / navigating or routing. I was not able to get filters running in Google Earth though.

We had set up a second computer with APRSISCE/32 program and that supports GPX file route overlays. In that program we were able to pre-fetch about 200MB of zoomed in mapping tiles before the event so only the APRS-IS data had to be downloaded during the event. The street maps in APRSISCE/32 were better for navigating/routing. Between the two setups we managed to support the event. Plus, if need be, that program supports a local RF link feed as well as APRS-IS.
