Hi there,

There is a cheap Bluetooth adapter for Baofeng radios. I bought it to use with my Baofeng UV-82 but the iOS application for that adapter doesn't support my model at the moment. I couldn't have a chance to test but as far as I see, the adapter has three functions. Firstly, you can use it as a Bluetooth adapter to use with a Bluetooth headset. Secondly, you can use it to program your ham radio via its application. Lastly, you can use it as a TNC device. So, it takes GPS data from your phone and transfers it to the radio via Bluetooth and then transmits. It has its own application on iOS and Android which shows the location data.

What I want to ask here is that, is there a plan to support this device as a TNC on iOS (aprs.fi)? I bought it cause its really cheap and you don't have to carry a cable with you when you want to use APRS.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Emrah

Hi,

If there is some programming manual / specification for how the iPhone can
talk to the device, I could try to look. "It does bluetooth" is not a
specification, I'd need some more technical details.

If it's using some non-standard modulation and protocol, encoded in the
dongle instead of the iPhone, it can't be made to support APRS. In which
case it's probably not a great fit for aprs.fi.

I read the reviews. I have a friend who created an interface with vox for running sound from smartphone to radio transceiver. Bluetooth needs a transmit as one has to press the button on ear phone mic to activate or press the to make a call. The aprs apps would work if you did not have activate the mic part.
My friends product would be a hot seller if he could find a Bluetooth chip to do that and send beacon and receive messages etc.

Hi Heikki,

Their iOS application is here and their Android application is here (Android link seems broken at the moment). Maybe someone here can dig and find something by reverse engineering. There is no more documentation right now. I'll try to reach out to them and will try to get more details. I'll post here if I get something useful from them.

Best,
Emrah
