The 2.0 version of the iOS app is out now! Full story here:

http://blog.aprs.fi/2020/05/aprsfi-iphone-ipad-20-with-messaging.html

* APRS text messaging
* APRS-IS position beaconing
* A high-performance software DSP modem/TNC (1200 bit/s only at this time)
* Longer time ranges in map and graph views, arbitrary date/time ranges on
map
* Up to 10 station profiles in Beacon

The features listed above are enabled by purchasing the Extra Features
subscription with an in-app payment. There is just a single subscription
feature set available - all of the price / period options give access to
all of the Extra features.

There's a 1-week free trial included in the 1-year subscription, but
remember to cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the trial, as Apple
will charge the next period up to 24 hours before each subscription period
ends!

The following improvements are there for everyone:

* Beacon now has a slider control to adjust the maximum interval
between beacon transmissions between 5 minutes and 60 minutes.
* The map view now has a button to adjust the time range.

And some bug fixes, of course.

Before starting a thread on the subscription pricing, please read through
this: http://blog.aprs.fi/2018/12/subscription-for-extra-features-ios.html

Thanks!

Super.  I checked the app store and it hasn't propagated yet.  I hope it comes soon.

Keep in mind that v2 requires ios 11, which renders my 4thgen ipad a device non gratia

Hi,

Yes, iOS 11 is required. In fact iOS 11 requirement came up already in the
previous version, 1.9.3, when I added support for some iOS 13 specific
things (Dark Mode for one!) and supporting iOS 10 started to become a
pain. Even more so when implementing Messaging in 2.0.

Supporting old versions comes with a cost (plenty of extra work sometimes)
so sometimes I just have to drop something that is only used by very few
users.

1.9.2 should still work on an iOS 10 device for a year or two I hope, but
it won't work forever.

Sorry.

I can't find the subscription in the iPadOS app. Is messaging subscription iPhone only?

Hi,

It does work fine on iPad, I've tested it and others use it too.

Are you saying you're not finding the subscription you made on the iPhone?

Or are you missing the "Subscription for Extra Features" menu item
completely, and the "Messages" tab in the bottom? If this is the case,
please check from the About view that you have version 2.0 installed.

1.9.3 and versions after that require iOS 11 or later. Maybe the iPad is
running iOS 10?

Do we go online to add the SSID. My fat fingers try on my Ipad and failed.

Please kindly ignore. I did in face update, but for whatever reason it must have been cached in the app store. I doubled checked version numbers and refreshed and it was there! Subscribed.

Ok, so there is a bug at least with restoring subscriptions. I can't get it to work in iPhone. The subscription doesn't restore. It pops up that I have a subscription, but nothing happens.

Ok, thank you. Some three-four users have reported this now, where usually
one of two devices does not restore the subscription successfully.

Pretty serious bug, and I'm looking into this. I sent some debugging
instructions to you privately.

In the Beacon view there's a Rename button which can be used to change the
SSID and callsign.

I did that yesterday after I sent an Email. My Ipad Bluetooth is useless. I can't seem to connect to Mobilink. I guess I'll need to attach via soundcard interface to my HT. WE tried WNLK-1 but using it via the internet didn't seem to work.

Do you have the Mobilink TNC3 or an earlier model?

Interesting, I have noticed several people have exchanged messages with
WLNK-1 successfully if that is what you meant. Please clarify which
callsign did you use, at what UTC time, and how exactly did it not work
(what did you expect to happen, what happened instead) and I can take a
look.

I have TNC3 and it was done this morning attempting to connect. . As far as WLNK-1, that was done last night via internet. No access to TNC. Presently my APRSIS via Win 10 works great. I remove the Bluetooth from Win 10. MY Tablet Android(Bluetooth) is off. I had my Ipad scanning for Mobilink TNC3. Nothing shows up other than the Bluetooth from my Desktop.

AS far as WLNK-1`. I see WLNK-L  and I see in small print under in green WLNK-! and very small print (Failed Retry count exceeded (6/6)

I still have Bluetooth scanning.

Update. I got it connected. I was trying to connect via settings > Bluetooth. It didn't work. I then went to Beacon and tried TNC and it found the MoblinkTNC and I connected to it. No longer using Win 10. Now Ipad is connected.

I did connect to WLNK-1, but I did find it Quirky. It sort of works.

Ah right.

The iPhone/iPad iOS Settings -> Bluetooth is for pairing with classic
bluetooth devices such as earphones, cars and such, by the operating
system. iOS does not allow apps to talk to these devices (apart from
playing audio to such a device after said pairing).

The TNC3 is a BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) device, not a classic bluetooth
device. It is discovered and connected directly by the aprs.fi app, from
the More -> TNC -> "Search for available TNCs" view.

I just wanted to say... I don't own an iOS device, I have no intention of ever owning an iOS device, I'd probably bet 10-to-1 I'll never buy an iOS device, this app is therefore probably going to be exactly zero use to me...

... but I still think it's freakin' awesome you've managed to spend some of this lockdown doing something constructive with your skills and producing something amazing. Way to go, Hessu, stay safe, stay cool, keep being awesome!   :-)
