aprs.fi reject valid position reports because of delayed repeaters.

Hi, I've designed my own APRS Tracker that I'm using in my
airplane. I'm sending using Mic-E format and also include a Position
Counter (C=xxx) in the Text portion of the packet. You can see from
the RAW APRS packets below there are a bunch of valid position reports
that are rejected because a Repeater (KA2FNK) is retransmitting the
original packet with anywhere from 1 to 4 minutes later. Because of
this the aprs.fi site is flagging them as transmitting too fast (<5
sec) or moving too fast (>500 Km/Hr). Neither of these errors are
actually happening because the fastest I transmit is every 6 seconds
and I can't fly at 500 Km/Hr. So because this Digi is repeating my
packet with a huge delay, valid packets are being rejected.

Is there anything I can insert into the packet that would allow
aprs.fi to accept the correct packets and reject the delayed repeated
ones? I wish there was a count or timestamp or a sequential number
that could be inserted into the packets that aprs.fi could then use to
sort the packets when issuing the SQL Query from the Database. At
this point I'm ready to make code changes to the tracker to improve
the look of these position reports on aprs.fi. It would also be great
if a sequential number was allowed per the APRS packet standard.

No, but do the area a favor and determine which is the truly offending
station and get with them and have it corrected. Most often, this is
caused by a KPC-3+ running in KISS mode, more commonly as the IGate, not
as a digi though.

If you can include the standard hhmmss timestamp in your position
beacons, it becomes easier to track down the duplications. If you
change you comment text, you'll drive locals with APRS-capable radios
nuts because many of them will generate "new station" alerts when your
comment changes, probably not something you'd appreciate so don't do it
to them either.

Yup, I should at some point make aprs.fi reject packets that have an
earlier timestamp than the most recent accepted packet. That should help
quite a lot. Currently aprs.fi does not utilize the timestamp in any way,
but it could be used for dupe filtering.

A sequence number would have been an excellent thing to specify from the
start.

Uh, sounds like a bug in those radios. The users of those radios will
certainly enjoy the new mic-e telemetry format, then. :)

If you are sending position packets every 6 seconds and you are
airborne, you are probably causing widespread QRM with your excessive
beacon rate. Current best practices recommend a maximum beacon rate
of once every 60 seconds.

This abusive rate is probably contributing to your delayed packet problem.

Please be considerate of other users of the APRS frequency and lower
your transmit rate.

Bob, I only have the Smart Beaconing min turn time set to 6 seconds while testing, I have now changed it to 15 seconds and when I fly in a straight line, which is most of the time I have the smart beaconing set to send a position report every 3 miles which is about every 75 seconds at my speeds.

Thanks for the info, I have contacted the owner of the offending station (KA2FNK), but he keeps thinking this is only happening with my Tracker even though I have proved to him that it was happening with other trackers as well.  It's just that it is much easier for me to see it since I add a Count=xxx to every position report that my Tracker sends.  For the flight below, I have also added the GPS time after the Count=xxx to make it real easy to see the time delta when KA2FNK repeats the packet.  You can see from the below log, that packet C=3 was recv at 19:03:46 which is 2 seconds after my GPS time, but then the same packet (C=3) I highlighted in Red was recv at 19:06:01 by KA2FNK, this is 2 minutes and 15 seconds later.  Notice that this repeated packet was rejected with Rate Limit, but yet aprs.fi must be updating the position using this data or why would it then reject the packet where C=9 right after this.  I think if aprs.fi rejects a packet because of Rate Limit, then it should ignore this position info which would then allow the following packet to be accepted.

I'm not up to speed on the Digi's and the settings they have, but what reason would cause this kind of delay?  With this going on in the area, it is just a matter of time before everyone's packets will be rejected because of the late packets .  Any help with contacting this Station Owner would be greatly appreciated, since he seems to now be ignoring my Emails.  APRS.FI is currently unable to filter these out and because of that, a lot of valid packets are rejected because of Rate limit (<5 sec) or Location changes too fast (>500 km/h).

Yup, I should at some point make aprs.fi reject packets that have an earlier timestamp than the most recent accepted packet. That should help quite a lot. Currently aprs.fi does not utilize the timestamp in any way, but it could be used for dupe filtering.

[Ray] How difficult would this change be to make? I think it would really improve the accuracy of the position reports on the Map view.

First, you'll have to quit using Mic-E encoding and go to either a
humanly readable format or the Compressed format. Mic-E doesn't support
having a standard timestamp in the packet. See aprs101.pdf chapter 6
for the Hours/Minutes/Seconds (HMS) standard format. The DHM isn't
nearly as useful in determining the length of the delays. Chapter 9
discusses the Compressed position report, including the location of the
timestamp. If you managed the Mic-E encoding, the Compressed won't be
difficult.

These issues are most obvious with trackers which are heard by many igates
(flying ones), and those which transmit relatively often (yours seems to
do). If your tracker supports profile switching (good ones do), it can be
helpful to configure the tracker to reduce the transmit rate and shorten
the digipeater path when you're flying higher up.

Even when aprs.fi rejects a packet due to rate limiting (and does not
store the position in the history) it does retain the packet's information
in memory so that the following packet can be compared against it. In many
cases it allows for quicker recovery to the "correct" packets after a
single bad packet. In the case of abusive transmit intervals it helps
aprs.fi to ignore *all* the packets from a station transmitting very
often, instead of letting some packets through.

Just to clarify... The station in question is an igate (a station which
relays packets from the radio channel to the Internet). I'm not sure if
it's a digipeater at all (don't have time to verify now - it's 1 AM and
we just won the ice hockey world championship ;).

The delay can be caused by a bad TNC (Kantronics KPC3+), possibly bad
serial line flow control settings, or even a bad Internet line at the

As discussed previously, the issue is traced back to a bug in the
Kantronics KPC-3+.

Did you follow this link, read the information and watch the videos?
It does a much better job of detailing the issue than we can do here
in an email... besides, why rewrite the same information over and over
again.

No, it only affects a portion of the packets due to timing and or
location, and only on aprs.fi because Hessu does some sanity checking,
and his algorithms try to educate the masses by flagging issues that
can cause problems on the APRS network. If you were running a real RF
based APRS station, it would happily ingest every packet heard. It
would never see the delayed packets because that particular issues is
a problem in delivering packet from the RF network to the APRS-IS
stream.

Attempting to contact someone and tell them that they have a problem
with their station is always problematic. It is difficult to approach
the issue via email in a manner that does not sound like a
nosey-nellie trying to tell someone how to play with their toys.

Rather than trying to engineer a solution to the problem, the better
solution is to correct the problem. Wouldn't it make more sense to
pull a thorn out of your foot rather than go buy some specially made
shoes that don't put pressure on the thorn?

Ray, you've stated that you have designed your own tracker... think
about adding the ability for the tracker to change paths based on
altitude, since you are using this in an aircraft.

As you are probably aware, you can hear for a long distance from
altitude. There's no need to run a path with digipeater hop requests
from anything over a couple hundred feet AGL. You've got a better line
of sight from up there than any ground based digipeater. When you're
down on the deck, run a path of WIDE2-1 like you are, but once up a
little ways, drop the path... you're being heard for hundreds of
miles. Take a look at who heard you on that last flight. Remember that
the APRS i-gates all listen to the APRS-IS stream, and only forward
your packets if they have not heard the packet before. Your packets
are probably being heard by a dozen i-gates, but only the first one to
push it to the APRS-IS stream will be seen. Everyone else drops the
packet. KA2FNK is the only one that isn't dropping the packet, and
that is because of the huge delays he is adding. The duplicate filter
is only about 30 seconds long, and any delays longer than that allow
the packet to bypass the duplicate filter, and cause the issue you are
seeing.

Asking all the digipeaters within a hundred or so miles to push your
packets around is just adding extra load to the terrestrial network
for no reason. Everyone can hear you direct already.

Remember, any changes Hessu makes is not going to increase the
accuracy of the position reports seen. Map location precision comes
from your station. You are talking about trying to correct an error
being introduced by a faulty piece of equipment at a station. Keep the
concepts and issues clear in your mind. If you keep track of what is
causing the issue, and fix that rather than trying to work around the
problem, you not only fix an issue that is causing problems for you,
but you fix it for all of us.

We all need to keep in mind the effect of our actions on the APRS

Whether that's watching out load on the network, path settings,
keeping digipeater settings up to date, or making sure our i-gates are
working properly doesn't really matter. It all ends up affecting us in
the end.

It was much easier to get William to correct the problem at the source.

I sent an email to William, and he changed the configuration on the
TNC. It's no longer in KISS mode, and should no longer be delaying
packets in the future.

Thanks James, that is awesome. I will also do my part to be a good APRS user and plan on adding a new feature to use No Path once I'm flying over a certain speed. I can't use Altitude because the GPS only sends your current Altitude and you never know the Altitude of the terrain in the area in which your flying. But I can switch from No Path when faster then 100 mph and then switch to a Path with Wide2-1 when slower then that speed, like when on approach to land.

Today I did a flight with my APRS Tracker when I was flying at 11,500 feet, which was around 12,300 for GPS Altitude  If you look at my log you can see it was reported as 1224 ft instead of 12240 feet.  I'm guessing it is missing the zero, but that might not be the root cause.  I've included the raw packets in case you need to check the Altitude reported by the packets in these packets for this leg of the flight.

Hi,

I'm a bit busy with other projects (work, and aprsc) and having problems
finding the exact packet displayed in the screen shot.

Could you help me a bit further by

1) checking if the display is good if you select metric display units from
Preferences (just to see if the conversion to feet is bugging)

2) checking if the altitude is decoded correctly, by looking at the raw
packets in DECODED mode (switch from Normal to Decoded in the raw packets
view) - it shows the decoded altitude in meters. This will show if the
packet encoding and decoding happens right.

3) I don't know the UTC offset for CDT, so it would be easier for me to
find the packet and look at it in the raw packets if you posted a single
specific packet exhibiting the problem, and specifying the UTC timestamp
for it. Thanks!

Also, when posting about a new topic to the aprs.fi discussion list,
please post a new message, instead of replying to an old message and just
changing the subject list. That messes up the threading a bit in the
