I am having a similar problem.

There are no icons displayed on the aprs.fi maps. Every object has a
blank white square next to the callsign. This happens in Firefox and
IE8 and I have cleared all cookies and histories but still the same.

I also see red crosses on Google Earth if I click the view in GE kml
link in the APRS.fi window.

I'm using XP Home over a corporate network. I first noticed this
yesterday.

Thanks a lot,

Paul

Hi,

The icons should now work in google earth, the symbol URL was broken. I
need to add some more tests to validate the KML interface after changes.

But this is more strange:

I suppose Google Earth works for you now?

Is the "normal" http://aprs.fi/ map (non-google-earth) still broken? It
works fine for me on IE6-IE7-IE8, Firefox 3.0 and 3.5, Opera and Chrome,
Windows XP and Linux. And it works on our corporate network too.

Can you try without the corporate network, on a "normal" consumer internet
line?

I made a little optimisation to the symbol image serving a couple days
back, and accidentally broke the KML interface. The normal map symbols
were changed too, but they shouldn't be broken like that.

Apologies but I'll be away four days from Sunday so can't check
results immediately.

However I am not getting the white square problem at my home computer
so suspect it is to do with a change on the network firewalls at work.
I'll be very keen to check when I get back though as I am taking my
VX-8 with me and will want to see my journey recorded.

Look out for packets from M1PWT-7 and MM1PWT-7 11th to 15th April.

Many thanks,

Paul

If the problem persists, please take a screen shot. With the IE window
active, Press Alt + PrintScrn and then paste the image (Shift-Ins) to a
graphics program and save it as a PNG image, and post it here or upload
it on the web somewhere. You can also mail it to me off-list.

Hi,

I'm back from Scotland at last!

Still having problems at work with missing Icons and GE red crosses.

Strangely Google Earth shows both red crosses and white squares
whereas APRS.fi map only has white squares.

This only happens at work on the corporate network and was working all
ok a few weeks ago.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Example jpgs here: http://www.telco.demon.co.uk/APRS/

Many thanks,

Paul

Randy (WF5X) figured that McAfee had erroneously listed one of my domains
(he.fi) as containing "Criminal activity". They've now fixed the listing,
but some networks might be blocking it for a while, still.

So, I've moved the symbol graphics to another domain (tunkki.fi), and that
seems to fix the problem for at least some users. They're being served
from a separate domain to reduce the size of the HTTP requests - the
rather big session and settings cookies sent with all requests to aprs.fi
are now not included in the requests for images. Reduces data traffic
significantly, which is especially good for mobile devices.

Hessu,

Update:

Icons are now working on aprs.fi and Google earth though our corporate
network security.

GE doesn't look quite right though. Although all Icons now appear,
certain items (Car and jeep for example) are on squares against black
background.

Thanks again,

Paul

Excellent.

Google Earth doesn't seem to properly handle some valid transparent PNGs,
which optipng produced with the default settings. I tuned the settings now
a bit so that the images are a bit smaller *and* work with Google Earth.
We'll see which browser broke this time.

By the way, Google Earth's cache clearing doesn't seem to apply to the
symbol images right away. Expect some delay before the regenerated symbols
are downloaded.
