I'm not able to get aprs.fi on iOS to transmit on my TNC3. Connection is working, packets are being received in raw view, and transmitted packets are shown but not actually transmitted. The TNC audio output transmit test in mobilinkd's app works. I have the radio squelched. I'm using the TNC3 with a UV-5R and iPhoneX

I don’t think the radio should be squelched. Doesn’t the TNC need to hear noise for the Aloha access to work?

I run squelch off/tnc3/iPhone 8+ and iPhone 5s/UV-5RAX+
As always on the Baofung’s , make sure the radio connector is really inserted ALL the way.

1. Have you experimented with the Output Settings? i.e. Simplex/Multi? Transmit tone? Output volume?

2. Per the manual and Rob’s many postings, the squelch should always be open.

Still no dice. Radio is now unsquelched, and transmit capability and audio output has been verified with the Mobilinkd TNC control app. It also sounds fine from another radio. The problem is APRS.fi isn't enabling transmit to the TNC3, also indicated by the red light on TNC3, however it still has a log of the transmission in the raw log listing.

Not mentioned so must be asked:
>”Beacon your position” slide switch green
>”Beacon via TNC” slide switch green
>Valid call sign entered
Maybe the TNC doesn’t think it should be transmitting.

I have the same problem, What was your fix if I may ask? I use a ft-60 with a iPhone 6S and it has a red transmit light on radio and can hear it on another radio.

I thought I had this problem for a long time too - solution was that I was using a HT.  Even in Jacksonville, pumping out 50W from a mobile VHF I don't get many hits on repeaters.  The HT was barely adequate.  Have you tried with a higher-power radio?

My issue is that the app must be open and on the front screen to actually transmit to the TNC.  If I have to switch to another app to keep in front (i.e., Apple Maps), the APRS.fl app will not transmit to the TNC.

Grant,

I've beaconed just fine with the app in background in the past. Please
confirm that the app has access to location in the background: go to iOS
Settings, Privacy, Location Services, aprs.fi, and verify "Allow location
access" is set to "Always". If it's set to "While Using the App" iOS will
only give location data from GPS to aprs.fi when the app is in the
foreground (visible on the screen). No location -> no beaconing.

Let me know if this helps. To be honest, I did not try the TNC3 with the
very latest iOS 13.2 versions.

If someone has problems with the TNC transmitting, radio transmitting too
(you can hear the transmitted audio on another radio), but other stations
not being able to decode it, you might want to check if the txdelay is
long enough. Maybe the HT transmitter goes on slowly and the delay between
PTT down and data transmission needs to be increased. This is especially
common if using VOX instead of proper PTT line keying.

Hessu,

Good point - I just went and changed my iPhone settings.  Thanks!

I do hear my aprs transmission on my separate VHF radio while on a different frequency (for instance, my FT-7900 that I use for APRS on 144.390 can be heard on my FT-2900 on 146.700).  My settings for tx delay, persistence, and slot are 10, 64, 10.

Very respectfully,

Grant

Hey There,
I'm having similar problems
I hope its appropriate for me to add my use case to this existing thread. LMK If i should make a new thread

short version:
Trying Aprs.fi app on iOS  using TNC3 & BF-F8HP
Tried  both  iPhone 6SE  (iOS 13.1.3.) and  iPad Air 2 (iOS 12.3.1)
Beacon via network works succesfully, but via TNC does not
Is making Radio TX, and i can hear it when i test on another Chanel w/ 2nd radio
but when i check the website on my laptop nothing is showing

All relevant settings i can think of:

Aprs.fi
  • made account & logged in
  • station set to KK6RVE-1
  • beacon on
  • beacon via TNC on
  • paired with TNC3
  • tried multiple symbols
  • TX delay 50
  • Persistence 120
  • Time 10
  • location sharing: always
BF F8HP
  • Freq: 144.390 (n america)
  • Simplex no PL
  • Squelch: 0
  • TXP: High (5watt)
  • vox 1
  • STE off
  • manual volume at 50%
TNC3
  • frimware 1.1.5
  • Gain in 4
  • twist in 2db
  • gain out 63
  • twist out 50
  • TX delay 50
  • Persistence 128
  • Time 10
  • Duplex Off

There is a note in trouble shooting about proper setting symbol (with a dead link to http://info.aprs.net/index.php/Symbol_configuration ) so i've tried the bicycle, red dot,  human and car, is there a preferred symbol?

When i view More > TNC I see my 'raw' packets, but don't know how to verify them. The date/times are in red, but the payload is black... nothing that looks like an error message

btw In your troubleshooting there at least two dead links http://www.aprsfl.net/findu.html & http://info.aprs.net/index.php/Symbol_configuration )

thanks for any help anyone can offer

Hi,

If the radio & TNC3 transmits, and you can hear it, it probably works
fine, as far as the aprs.fi app is concerned - it made a packet and gave
it to the TNC to be transmitted, and it was transmitted as you heard it.

Maybe your transmission is not heard by an igate or a digipeater. Check if
you're in range of one. Can you hear packets from them, and do they get
decoded by the TNC3?

You could also verify the quality of transmission by trying to receive it
on another APRS radio (such as a Kenwood or Yaesu APRS-capable rig, if you
have one, or if someone in your local ham club has). You may have to
adjust transmit audio levels (not too quiet, not overdriven), or increase
txdelay if our BF-F8HP is slow to key the TX. On the other hand, your
txdelay of 50 is already 500 milliseconds - very long.

Hi Simon

I have gone through the same process as you going through.  In my case it was with an Iphone XS, TNC3, and Wouxum UV3 handheld.  I now am able operate it with the rx squelch on at 1 on the radio and incoming and  outgoing packets are successfully decoded.

It was necessary to set the outgoing gain down to 16 and the twist to 70 on the TNC configuration app to get the packets to be successfully decoded.  Don't forget that there is likely mic pre-amp circuit in your radio and you will not need much output from the tnc to the radio.

Attached are shots of my TNC configuration screens.

Let me know if you have any questions.
