I've not seen this discussed anywhere. Would it be possible to get
AppScale running on DotCloud? In their documentation (http://
docs.dotcloud.com/guides/build-file/) it says that it's possible to
create a custom service. I'm curious because I've been sponsored for
the next year by DotCloud and would hate to spend money on EC2 when
DotCloud already runs on EC2 and is free.

Hello,
Chances are it will not. AppScale requires a lot of additional software to support all the APIs.
Here is an incomplete list of software:

Their build system doesn't look like it can install any random package. We do provide an AMI, and a new one will be out soon for AppScale 1.6.

Contact me directly and perhaps we can see about getting a public cloud going for your application.

Thanks
-Raj

It turns out that you can install any random Ubuntu package in their
build files. Unfortunately it doesn't seem there's any easy way for
the instances to get each other's IP addresses. Is it possible to give
AppScale an arbitrary port to listen on for communication with other
AppScale instances?

Since you have access at the VM level, opening up a port and running a custom process should be straight forward. If you want communication outside of the AppScale cluster make sure to open the port on the firewall.

It would seem I worded that wrong. You don't have root access, only
the ability to install apt packages. You also can't add apt
repositories. Ports are limited to the ports given to you by their
build service.
