Ive been using Avare for a few years an I like it a lot.  I went on a long cross country the other day with my LG V60 phone and a stratux with the latest software rev (16.0 I think).
Without ADS-B in, Avare works flawlessly.  Once I connect to the Wifi Stratux and use the IO function to pipe data to Avare, Avare will crash.  Seems like it'll take a hour for the first crash.  Ill restart it, and then it'll crash after 30 minutes.  Ill restart it and it'll crash in 5 minutes.  And Itll finally become unusable and crash in 30 seconds after restarting it.  The screen will Freeze for a few seconds and become un-responsive before it crashes.
Disconnecting it from the WiFi stratux prevents it from crashing.

Any idea?

I don't know exactly when but in the last month or so my Avare has become very unstable and crashing every 5 minutes or so as well.

I've also been using AVARE for over 10 years with no issues.  Last week (10/29/23) Avare became unstable.  I was exhibiting the same problem as original poster.  I kept restarting it, because I was flying in extremely crowded airspace, and it kept shutting down after a few minutes.  After the 10th shutdown, I got an error message that said the app had too many errors and needed to be uninstalled and reinstalled.  The OS would not let me start Avare after that.  I uninstalled Avare and re installed it.
This morning I went flying again with the same results.  I started my Samsung A50 phone running Android version 11, with the same results.  My Android tablet is a Samsung TAB A 6 running Android version 5.1.1. I suspected the tablet was having issues to the revision of Android that it was running,  But it looks like the newer Android version has the same issue.
I plan on uninstalling current version of Avare and installing a older version.
  I'm running Avare version 10.3.0

I'm running the following and haven't had issues and I'm flying in what is probably the busiest airspace in the country between NYC and Washington DC

Samsung T290 w/Android 11 (primary device) & Samsung T380 W/Android 9
Avare 10.3.0
All FAA charts (I do not have the non-FAA data loaded)

My most recent flights which were during the month of October with chart cycle 2310 (today starts cycle 2311)
1) MMU ->  Hudson River northbound via EWR (over the numbers of 22L+R at 1500ft) and then southbound along the East River talking to both Newark and Laguardia towers and then back to MMU via EWR
2) MMU to IAD and return (Friday/Saturday)

I know that doesn't help you directly with your crashing issues, however I wonder if you are running into an Android resource issue?  Maybe you might want to force close all running applications and/or restart the tablet prior to starting a flight to see if this helps?

One of the things I do with the tablet is severely restrict what software I have loaded on the tablet as I do not want to risk interoperability issues between applications.  I have on the tablet besides the bloatware that comes on the tablet (I disabled/removed as much as I could) Avare, Google Drive (used for my AFM and other documents required to be onboard), Chrome, a music player, all the other Google garbage that gets loaded, plus a very few other aviation specific applications.

The TAB A6 is only used for Avare.  It is the only app on it.

Thank you SO much to those who've reported this problem!! I'm happy not
to have been flying in busy unfamiliar territory lately, in case it
happened to me too. Hopefully this discussion will also prepare other
pilots to quickly and safely shift focus if it crashes.

In all my years happily using Avare since first release, I'm
*exceptionally* glad to only have a handful of issues in 2k hours'
flight all over N. America, Bahamas, HI, and even N.&S. NZ islands. That
said, when Avare has had an issue in flight it feels like there's
nothing worse! Without the fore-warning of this discussion it could add
pilot workload to decide if/when to give up on trying to figure out the
problem while keeping situational awareness both inside & outside the
cockpit!

Anyway, in the hope it might be helpful for our tireless volunteer
Apps4Av Dev Team, I googled for an explanation on how to send a bug
report. In essence consensus seems to be that the "easy" way is via the
Developer Options "applet" in the Settings of every Android device.

If despite exhausting search you've never seen that applet in your
Settings, it's because Google "hides" it to keep users from being
frightened or inadvertently messing something up. I've been using it
since not long after excitedly buying the early DROID phone. Never
having had need to send a Bug Report, my use has to do with carefully
turning off "Bloatware" that I can't Disable in the Apps section of
Settings.
(while not for everyone, I've found disabling Bloatware has made
all of my dozen or so Android devices faster, more stable, and with
many days of battery charge & longer battery life)

Anyway, if anyone who can replicate this crash is willing to take a few
minutes and get/send a Bug Report to the Dev Team you'll be helping
yourself and every other Avare user. Here's one HowTo link (please post
any you find, too) that looks fairly good:
https://academy.test.io/en/articles/2541912

It's for both Android & iOS (Apple), so you have to wade thru some
irrelevant info. After you skim the intro, the simple HowTo part starts
here:

Avare has not been updated for many months. Its probably related to something new in adsb that it can't handle properly. Will take a look shortly.

All who are seeing app crashes:

All crashes in the app being reported are out of memory crashes. The devices are running out of runtime memory. I don't know why that would start heppe ing suddenly but could be due to lots of data coming over adsb and a combination of older hardware like old tablets.

Same thing happened to me this morning. I ran avatar on two different Sam song for Friday galaxy notes. Both of them repeatedly shut down and I had to restart easily 10 times each on a 45 minute hop.

Jeff, Are you connected to a ADS-B-in receiver.  My Avare works fine until I connect to ADS-B, then Avare will crash constantly.

Yes, for my trip over the Hudson/East River I was using a Stratux unit and my trip to IAD I was using an NGT-9000 transponder which is GDL90 out over Wi-Fi.

Hi all

I did some tests using Avare ADSB and fired an extreme amount of messages at Avare, no crash. Even using live data no issues so far. Since old versions of Android seem to crash too, it should not be Android or Avare related (no update in a while). Let's verify if ADSB data is causing it. Can someone reproduce a crash while Avare ADSB is running & collecting the ADSB data? You would simply need to activate "Save raw data" and make the collected data available to me.

Alternatively, on the IO tab, there is a button to "Save" the data. Activate it, reproduce a crash and send me the file.

Regards, Mike

I will try to save the data file for you.  I won't be able to fly until Monday.

I ran Avare today for several hours with no problems but wasn't connected ADS-B.  I did this to make sure the issue was related to ADS-B.

My ads-b is a uavionix echo.

Have you gotten a file yet?

We are going flying Friday or Saturday.  I could try saving and sending the file then. I see the save button on the io tab. Where will my devises put it? And what email address do I send the files to?

I’m using 3  Samsung devises:
sm-g975u  running version 12
sm-g965u, running version 10
sm-t380, running version 9

You may send it to this email.
You should export everything though.
Thanks

Hi all

I had a closer look at the export feature (IO tab > Tools) and indeed, the "out.bin" file cannot be exported right now. The reason has been identified and we're working on a fix.

Hi All
The latest build exports the .bin file from the same export menu (use the item Recorded Files).
For all the crashes, the main issue is out of memory. This needs to be investigated and may take some time. Wondering if people are using very old devices that have less memory, but regardless it needs to be looked at from the app side.
Thanks

I'm impressed that you and presumably others on the all-volunteer Dev
Team were able to track the issue down and get it fixed so quickly.
Noting how short of time I am even in retirement it's amazing to see how
you find time from work, family, and everything else, to donate your
considerable expertise on our behalf. ... And this fix is to make it
possible for you to donate *More* time tracking down and fixing another
problem that only affects some devices!

Thank You!! :D

Hear, Hear!
Huzzah!
and
Hooray for the Dev Team!

And in this time of Giving Thanks, may I suggest that everyone who
depends on Avare, set up a recurring contribution to the Team to
offset the inevitable expenses of their work.  I use PayPal to send
them a pittance (~= one Starbucks venti mocha that I'll never miss)
every month.  Having put in my time slinging and shooting code for a
living, it's the least I can do to show my appreciation for what's
involved in keeping it running, stable, and feature-rich.
