ADS-B Receiver App with separate phone

I thought I saw a post on this in the past, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

I have an old phone with no SIM card that would be perfect for an ADS-B receiver in the plane instead of plugging in the SDR radio to my Avare tablet.

I have been trying to get my tablet connected to the ADSB receiver without success.

I think most of the posts are assuming you have ADSB Receiver app and radio installed on the same tablet as Avare and it just connects internally. 

I've seen posts talk about connecting via WiFi and port 4000. I've setup ADS-B Receiver to output on 127.0.0.1 and port4000 and have WiFi turned on.

I've set Avare to use ADSB Weather which is what they say I need to receive ADSB. I have WiFi turned on. 

But Avare never connects.

Does anyone know what the missing link is to get the tablet connected to ADSB Receiver when it's on a separate device?

Just to clarify, on your phone you see the ADSB device listed and connected in the WiFi list?

Ah. No. Maybe that's the clue I needed. So I need to create a WiFi network between the ADSB Receiver App phone and my Avare tablet?

Bummer is with no SIM, the phone can't turn on mobile hotspot. I'll have to do some research....

I'm not aware of an application that turns a phone into a separate ADS-B receiver that will forward the ADS-B data to another device (tablet/phone), I am aware of applications that will turn an old phone into a GPS that can be used to provide a GPS signal over Bluetooth IIRC to a device that doesn't have an operating GPS.

There is however an application that will interface with Avare that allows you to plug a SDR (Software Defined Radio) into an OTG (On The Go) cable to an android device.  The application is called "ADS-B Receiver Pro" and you can check out this page - https://hiz.ch/index.php/home/adsb-receiver  Although I could be wrong, I don't think it will transmit over WiFi to another device, this is designed to be run concurrently with Avare on the same device.

The Avare ADSB Pro App does push a $14 USB SDR to Avare.

However- NOT all hardware- phones and tablets have USB "ON THE GO" (OTG) turned on in their OS.

Step 1 is buy a $5 OTG dongle for your device.  It allows you to plug a USB storage thumb drive device into your device.

If the device recogizes the USB drive, it will work with a SDR and AVARE ADSB Pro.  OTG works.

That said- old devices have old batteries and the SDR draws about 500mAh.  It's a receiver, vut they get warm to the touch- lots going on in there.

Also, it will only be on the 978 OR 1090 side, not both at the same time.

I did find I can use an old 978 only ADSB - in device AND run the SDR on 1090 through Avare ADSB Pro app and Avare gets it all at the same time.

The micro USB dongles with 2 inputs, for power and OTG at the same time do not power and device I ever tried- you are on battery.  If your old device is micro- USB powered.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I am already trying to the the ADSB Receiver app on OTG. It works just fine on my seconard device (Samsung S7 with no SIM or service). The issues I'm having is getting the phone connected to my Avare tablet (Samsung Tab2). I can't seem to find a way to get a WiFi connection between the two. I tried WiFi Direct and both devices say they are connected, but ADSB Receiver still doesn't show that Avare is connected.

I'm begining to think that ADSB Receiver will only work is I install the app and SDR radio directly on my Tab 2 and will not work when on a secondary device. My preference was to use a second device to save battery on my primary tablet, and also so that I don't need the radio connected to the tablet on my knee board.

At this point, I think I'm going to swith over to a Stratux Rasberry Pi solution since that seems to have definite confirmation that it will work.

So are you wanting the S7's ADSB info to display on the tablet? If so,
I don't know of any way that's possible. My own solution is to use the
S7 running Avare and the HIZ ADSB app
to display traffic, wx, etc. on the phone and use the tablet for navigation.

Exactly. Using the phone for ADSB enables you to turn it off if/when
not needed to save that battery. I also got a 2-wire dongle that
enables powering the SDR ADSB receiver so the phone's battery is only
powering the phone.

That's what I did, and it has many advantages. One is that my
HIZ/SDR/S7 combo is a handy backup if the StratuX solution fails in
flight. I've actually used it a couple of times.

John, The only thing I do like this is put my S9 on good wifi that my old Tab2 on Cyanogenmod OS with Avare is not allowed on as the OS is too old to be allowed on.

I can then turn on my S9's hotspot and the wifi downloads pass through my S9 to the Tab2 without using my cell data.

I don't know a way to broadcast over wifi from an operable Android Avare device to another device.

A decent Avare tablet is $130 and a DualAv XGPS170D is now $299 and not much more than a Stratux.  It runs over bluetooth with a simple single power switch, just no AHRS without jumping up to the XGPS190.

If you have wifi, Stratux is fine.  No, wifi direct and anything ad hoc is locked out of being flexible, if accessible at all.

Last time I put together a Stratux unit, maybe 2 years ago I think I did it for about $130, that did not include a rechargable battery however.

I got a Stratux kit, took maybe 20 minutes to assemble and was off and running. Can't believe how easy it was to get traffic in Avare once I powered up the Stratux. Stratux also has a decent web interface to view status of both frequencies as well as details on what it's downloaded. Glad I gave up on ADS-B receiver app and just went to Stratux.

Great it works! As mentioned in this thread, it's currently not possible to create a Android <> Android WiFi connection easily. The ADSB Receiver app is meant to run on the same device as Avare does. But Bluetooth may be an option that would be fairly easy to implement I guess. I put that on the list of potential new features for the ADSB Receiver!
