Is my Stratux toast?

After working flawlessly for several years, my Stratux seem to no longer see any traffic, at least as far as I can tell from the Avare IO page.

Here is my process.  Please advise what I've neglected, done wrong, or should do next.

On power up, the Stratux:
 - turns on the red LED
 - runs the fan for 3 sec.
 - turns on the green LED

On Avare start, it displays:
 - the local sectional
 - the airplane icon in the correct location
 - no error/warning messages

Selecting the IO tab displays:
 - "Connected to GPS/ADSB units on WiFi (Broadcast on Managed Network)"
 - "4000"
 - "out.bin"

Clicking on the 'Listen' box displays:
 - a green checkbox in the 'Listen' box and these messages:
  Started!
  Starting WiFi Input
  WiFi Input :Connected
Creating socket to listen on port 4000
  ----Output ----

Here's the worst symptom:
 - When I try to access the Stratux via 192.168.10.1, the connection returns:
net::ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE

Generally, this means that something in the Stratux has gone Tango-Uniform, but I don't believe in bit-rot, and absolutely nothing has changed since it was installed six years ago, whereas the Avare software has been forced to update by outside vendors.

Am I now reduced to re flashing the Stratux microSD card?  Or is this a known Avare issue and not a Stratux problem in the first place?

All advice appreciated!

Stratux is essentially a Raspberry Pi, and my suggestion is to debug it as such. Connect it to a HDMI monitor and a keyboard, see what you get. Your issue might be as simple as a corrupt file on the micro SD card.

If you cannot connect to the Stratux web page then it sounds like the StratuX is not functioning properly.  Just an FYI the last two versions of the StratuX software requires a 64bit Raspberry Pi which means a 3B or newer.  Based upon the release notes I'd go for the newest version as it no longer writes to the OS area of the SD card.

Thanks for the helpful reply, Jeffrey.  Tal didn't deduce from my "business card" that the last computer I plugged a monitor into to debug its code, took up the entire floor and required chillers.

Not being able to query the StratuX device itself, I had to "void the warranty" and crack the case to find out what was written on the board.  It reads, "Raspberry Pi 3 Model B V1.2".  Does that means I have a fighting chance of flashing it with the current version of the StratuX software and, assuming there's no underlying hardware failure of some sort, I'll be back in business?

Here's the worst symptom:
 - When I try to access the Stratux via 192.168.10.1, the connection returns:
net::ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE--

Very unlikely anything to do with Avare then. I don't recall what the lights mean, but maybe a bad power supply so you might try using a different 2 Amp USB power supply.  I'll assume you tried the above via ethernet rather than wifi.  You might save some time by just reformatting the SD and re-installing the StratuX os.  Then try the 192.168.10.1 ethernet web interface again. If it works, first guess is an issue on your Stratux SD chip, in which case your safest bet is to replace the chip and install StratuX on it. If no luck, my suggestion: Go to the rpi site and download the appropriate rpi OS, load it onto a compatible SD chip, pull the USB units (GPS, etc.), power it up, and try via ethernet again. Worst case a bad board, and they're pretty cheap. Maybe also possible a bad USB unit dragging down the system but less likely.

You didn't mention the brand if any.  Some time ago I had hassles with a "FlightBox" brand StratuX that had custom mods to the standard rpi hardware and no upgrade to the then latest StratuX firmware. I bought parts online and built a new one that works much better, then managed to fix the FlightBox and use it at home to look at traffic or mess with Avare in flight planning.

Good luck, and please keep us posted on your struggle for everyone's benefit.  Avare's Forum has turned out to be among the better sources for StratuX info, so your experience in this will be helpful beyond the Avare user community.

Very thorough analysis, John.

As I said, "I don't believe in bit-rot ..." but that may be the explanation.  No flashing LEDs, everything boots up fine, it just didn't talk to the outside world.  Your comprehensive list of increasingly serious explanations would make a good FAQ entry.

As it turns out, Jeffrey Ross' suggestion to simply re-flash the microSD card did the trick.  So now I'm running the latest, greatest, release of StratuX and Avare and all is well.

Thanks everyone!

I would guess that you need to reflash the sd card, go to this link for a youtube step by step, very simple. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJmMdIvb8zE

A few yrs ago I inherited an old StratuX....couldn't make it work....a IT oriented friend of mine determined the OS was 0.7x....yikes, current was 1.61 if I remember correctly. That seemed to fix things along with some help in settings etc from Jeff and a couple of others. Has been working just fine but I have not had the opportunity to use/fly since the most previous update. Previous update that went from tools to IO worked fine with 4000 selected and listen clicked. Hoping the latest update a week or two ago did not introduce any idiosyncrasies----Nexus 7 2nd gen and Moto power 8 phone.

Flew today. Reference my comment regarding any idiosyncrasies with latest update: no issues. Avare/StratuX worked fine.
