Just installed AvareX on my PC.  When trying to download databases the Southeast and Northeast Plates and Csups consistently fail.  All sectionals, low altitude IFR charts, other plates and other CSups were no problem.

I'm unable to reproduce SE plates/CSUP download errors with Windows 10 and 0.52.  That is, I downloaded and exercised SE plates and CSUP just now.  Hope this helps.

I am running Windows 10 as well but my version is 0.59.  My iPhone downloads them just fine.  Thanks for trying.

Greg / Brad,

I believe this may be the issue I ran into on one of my laptops. For me, those same downloads work fine on one of my laptops, but the other laptop fails on those same downloads.

The issue:
CON and PRN are Windows / DOS things, and AvareX on one of my laptops will not complete the unzipping of the folders for those downloads. Airport with the identifier "CON" is in the downloads for Northeast, and airport "PRN" is in the downloads for Southeast.

I have one windows laptop that does not have a problem unzipping those files, and another windows laptop that will not unzip those files and fails the download.

Thank you,
David Farleman

Thanks David.  Guess there is not much to do other than try a different computer.  Unless this should be reported as a bug.

Blame aside, assume this error is detectable by the application until shown otherwise, and thus actionable.

Found that a filename/folder of CON or PRN are not allowed in Windows.  Not sure why some people are able to make this work.  The unzipping made it _CON so maybe the software could use that as an alternate for this.

I did find the file and unzipped it.  The rest of the stuff I was able to get into the correct place but haven't yet found it in AvareX.

I take that back.  AvareX did find the Portland Main Plate though it doesn't think that it has downloaded the NE Plates.

I am not sure if this where I should request an improvement so I will do so and can do it again somewhere else if appropriate.  Given that Windows can't handle folder names CON or PRN and those folders are used for Concord NH and Mac Crenshaw Memorial Airport in Greenville AL I would like to propose what should be a relatively simple change that could easily be implemented across all platforms in order to keep the software simple.  If for the approach plates the letters AP were prepended on the beginning of the three letters and for chart supplements, CS was also  prepended to the directory names for all of the plate directories and the chart supplement directories there would not be a problem with using AvareX with windows.  As it stands now many (not sure why not all) Windows users can't load the Northeast and Southeast approach plates or chart supplements.

I had to dig through some old notes as there were some private discussions in early 2020 about both Concord, NH and Greenville, AL with the use of the restricted filesystem names of CON and PRN.  Also I believe this will  break Nulato Airport in Alaska (NUL).   This came up while exploring other methods to distribute the charts, it wasn't deemed an issue as it only effected vfat filesystems and at the time only Android was being used.

Obviously this has reared its ugly head again, I'm not sure what the best approach is to fix it going forward.  As I think you see every airport simply uses the 3 letter FAA identifier as the directory name for the airport's approach plates.

Filenames disallowed in WindoZe - CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1, and LPT1 - 9

On Windows this depends on the method used.  For example, Windows 10/11 includes the built-in command "tar" which is actually bsdtar 3.5.2 with zlib; try "tar -h" from the command line.  I'm able to "tar -xf SE_CSUP.zip" and have the PRN folder extracted and usable on both Windows 10/11.

Multi-platform has trade-offs, like everything.

Not to be a downer on the windows based flight planning but might it be better to allow importing of flight plans from either wxbrief or AOPA's flight planning software and continue the focus elsewhere.  Certainly will need to be edit a flight plan in the plane on a device but if we can use a flight planner like wxbrief or AOPA then AvareX can focus on other things.
