In AvareX 0.0.29 on a Samsung Galaxy S21 I can see my previous track logs listed in "User Docs" when I shut off tracks and I've used the "Share" option to save them out to a Google Drive but they're all 337 byte .KML files with no tracklog data contained.

The tracks were showing fine while using the app each flight and I always closed the app after a flight with the back button and choosing "Yes" on the "Exit App?" dialog.

Any ideas why AvareX 0.0.29 is doing this?

Thanks,
Dan R

Attached are the log files in question.
Just the headers/frame of a KML with the timestamp for each file.

Thanks,

Were you able to get this to work? My problem is slightly different - no
track files are saved. I have a few .kml saved from a couple of months ago,
under Documents -> User Docs. They are about 270Kbytes or so.

However, since mid-Sept (a few releases ago), no track files are saved at
all (i.e. not even an empty one). Last time I flew was with 0.0.31. Tracks
layer is on.

Am I looking in the right place? Anyone know where these are located so I
can see them outside of AvareX, using a file browser?

I'm always offline until I get some place with WiFi + Internet; I'm not
sure if that matters. If AvareX doesn't crash, I use the exit dialogue when
I am online, hoping that will trigger a save of the tracks, but it does
not.

Thanks

I flew 4.3 hours yesterday and both my outbound and return tracks were not properly saved in AvareX v0.0.54+54 on a Samsung Galaxy S21 5G.

I am opening AvareX, sliding the Tracks slider all the way opaque, they are showing up on the map as I travel, everything seems to be working great!
When I land, I slide the Tracks slider to fully transparent and the share tracks menu comes up like it should.
I select Share on my most recent tracklog and email it to myself via Gmail and then also return to the share button and upload it to my Google Drive.

The files attach/send/upload but each time they are blank 337 byte KML files (see yesterdays files attached)
I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled AvareX with new database downloads and everything. I've done this twice.
The tracks are behaving normally in the app and showing up as they should, but they are not saving out the track data.

Please help! I can test things to see if this is just a fringe case with my device or if it's a bigger issue.

Thanks,
Dan

Hey, thanks for the update, team!
I'm still struggling with exporting any track files from AvareX Version: 0.0.55+55.
I always get a blank 337 byte KML file with no tracklog data contained. Here's a recent example:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
  <Document>
    <name>AvareX Flight Path</name>
    <description>3-D Flight Position Data</description>
    <ExtendedData>
      <Data name="time">
        <value>2025-04-12T17:46:17.167080</value>
      </Data>
    </ExtendedData>
  </Document>
</kml>

I get the same exact results of a blank KML export every time I fly using AvareX on my:
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 5G (SM-G991U1)
    • Android Version 14
    • AvareX Version 0.0.55+55
    • Internal GPS
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ (SM-X210)
    • Android Version 14
    • AvareX Version 0.0.55+55
    • Internal GPS
Tracklogs are displaying properly as I fly and when I get done with my flight, before I close AvareX I slide the Tracks opacity slider all the way left which brings up the "Documents" screen and I pick "Share" to share the most recent 'track_2025_April_DD@HH_MM_SS.kml' to my Google Drive and then also attach to a Gmail and email myself just to see if that works.

Am I doing something wrong!?!? Thanks!

-------------------------------
Here are a couple more examples of the same blank KML files:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
  <Document>
    <name>AvareX Flight Path</name>
    <description>3-D Flight Position Data</description>
    <ExtendedData>
      <Data name="time">
        <value>2025-03-09T13:20:54.567117</value>
      </Data>
    </ExtendedData>
  </Document>
</kml>

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<kml xmlns="http://www.opengis.net/kml/2.2">
  <Document>
    <name>AvareX Flight Path</name>
    <description>3-D Flight Position Data</description>
    <ExtendedData>

        <value>2025-04-06T16:21:48.600634</value>
      </Data>

Not sure what to suspect as you are doing everything right. Any antivirus/malware software preventing sharing ?  Will try to find a Samsung device to check.

Hey AvareX Dev Team & Users,

Has anyone else successfully exported a saved Track Log (with actual data, not blank) from AvareX?
Or possibly have you tried and failed to save a track log from AvareX v0.0.55 on any Samsung Galaxy device like me?
  • I am really enjoying the app but have been disappointed that unable to export a saved track log from "Documents" so far.
  • I 'Share' the .kml file from Document > User Docs either to an email or Google Drive and it successfully sends, but it's always a blank KML with no tracking info so I'm not sure the tracking is being properly written to the KML file in the app storage somewhere.
  • I've uninstalled/reinstalled AvareX v0.0.55 multiple times on a Galaxy Tab A9+ and a Galaxy S21 and given the app all the permissions I possibly can, but my KML files are still not containing any track log information even though I can see my entire full track on the map as I'm flying and I'm ending the tracking to save the track log to User Docs before closing the app. There's a list of all the KMLs I've tried to save in my "User Docs" but none of them contain any track points in the KML file.

It always saves a blank 337-byte KML file with just the time stamp:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
  <Document>
    <name>AvareX Flight Path</name>
    <description>3-D Flight Position Data</description>
    <ExtendedData>
      <Data name="time">
        <value>2025-04-12T17:46:17.167080</value>
      </Data>
    </ExtendedData>
  </Document>
</kml>

Hey, all,

I'm having the same issue on a Samsung Galaxy S24 that I use for aviation with AvareX. I've found the 337-byte KMLs as well and can't for the life of me get AvareX to produce something else. Last I tried was v0.57. Very consistent experience to Dan's. Working on my instrument right now, and tracks would be super helpful!

Thanks,
McGregor

OK will check. Is the GPS on and you are moving at a good speed?

I am having issues with empty kml files every tenth flight or so.

If this happens, I see the track plotted in the app but the saved kml file is empty. I attached one empty file from yesterday. I am also using a Samsung Tablet.

Best

Nepomuk

Yeah, I should mention that the tracks show up as I'm flying at speed with GPS on. But after toggling the Tracks off later, I retrieve the file and it's empty. I've also tried capturing while riding my motorcycle, though I have no idea if that would be expected to work. Admittedly, I haven't had many opportunities to troubleshoot while flying. I wonder if it's a background activity setting, my VPN, some storage permissions, etc.

The fact that Nepomuk only sometimes has empty tracks would suggest it's not a fundamental compatibility issue with the device. I'll keep trying to troubleshoot.

Anybody know what triggers the Tracks capture? Minimum speed? Altitude AGL?

I am experiencing the same symptoms as McGregor above. I've tried v0.0.59+59 with both a Samsung Galaxy S21 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ tablet and have never been able to successfully save a track log. The tracking is displaying properly on the map as I fly around and I can toggle it off and back on to *theoretically save my track* and begin a new track which also starts tracking and behaves as expected on the map. It's just the "saved" tracklogs in User Documents are empty KML files with only the timestamp written.

I've tried over the course of more than a dozen flights running the latest version of AvareX (each version back to 0.0.29) on both the smartphone and tablet and still haven't been able to successfully export a KML with a tracklog contained.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help troubleshoot/test a potential future fix for this issue.

Thanks,
Dan

3 knots is the speed limit at which it activates. Made some fixes. Ok to try in next release.

Thanks! I just now got the tracks going on my bicycle, toggled them off, and tried to share the file to Google Drive. Same 337 byte file. I'll keep an eye out for v0.0.60 and let you know how that goes...
