Hi Folks,

There has been significant interest from community members in supporting the continued development and maintenance of the legacy Avare app through subscriptions. First and foremost, thank you for your ongoing support—it is greatly appreciated.

I want to reassure everyone that Avare Legacy is not being deprecated, will continue to be maintained, and will remain available in the app stores.

In addition, a signed APK will be made available through our shared distribution location for users who wish to sideload the application. However, the existing chart download limitations for non-subscribed users will remain in place.

While subscriptions help ensure that Avare Legacy remains available and supported, the current subscriber base is not sufficient to maintain feature parity between Avare Legacy and AvareX. As a result, most new development and innovation will continue to be focused on AvareX.

There are many capable EFB applications available today, but Avare and AvareX have always been unique. They are open source, allowing users to inspect the code, understand how the software works, and even modify it to meet their specific needs.

AvareX also introduces capabilities that are not commonly found in other EFBs. For example:

  • AI-assisted translation of complex FAA terminology, including NOTAMs and PIREPs, into plain, human-readable language.
  • Integrated community features, such as club-specific forums.
  • Flight scheduling tools that can be managed directly within the application.
  • Cross-platform support for Android, iOS, MacOS, Windows, Linux, and Raspberry Pi.

All of these features are delivered while maintaining a user interface that remains as simple and approachable as possible.

One topic worth addressing directly is pricing. Free software is valuable, but sustaining and improving aviation software requires ongoing investment of time, infrastructure, and resources. Going forward, serious users who benefit from these applications will be asked to contribute a modest subscription fee to help support their continued development.

That said, I remain committed to ensuring that cost is never a barrier for those who genuinely need the software. If you are a student pilot, a flight instructor early in your career, or someone facing financial hardship, simply send a brief email explaining your situation. I will be happy to provide a complimentary subscription whenever appropriate.

Thank you again for your support, feedback, and trust over the years. The Avare community has always been the foundation of these projects, and I look forward to continuing to serve pilots with both Avare and AvareX for years to come.

Blue skies,

Zubair

Hi, I would like to again ask that consideration be given for a ONE TIME LIFETIME cost for unlimited Avare legacy.

Paying an ongoing subscription fee for users who are not expecting focus on developing the app is, IMHO, not the right model.

I hope you will consider this option along with a monthly fee for those who want to do that.

Thank you,
j

Hi
Charts need to be prepared every month and having a life time subscription will be a burden in the long run on the development. No other monthly update app does it. Avare made it free for 15 years, but the chart update is a job in itself and took a lot of time.

Greetings:
Looking for a little clarification, I currently fly 6 different aircraft (from my Piper Navajo down to my EAA Biplane) with 4 different handheld devices (2 cell phones and 2 tablets). How many subscriptions will I need, or is one enough covering all platforms? Additionally, I think I saw somewhere that without a subscription you were limited to one region, I assume this means you can only use it with one chart, as an example: you could only use it for the south central sectional chart, provided that where you were?
Thanks for the effort and the answers to my questions.

Hi

You need one subscription for all the devices, if you use the same ID to log in, and hit the 'Restore Purchases' on each device on the subscription page.
One chart means 1 download in each download category.

Greetings:
Ok, I finally got everything logged in on all 4 devices using the little purple icon in the upper right hand corner, and set up different aircraft in each device, but I cannot figure out where I am supposed to click or tap to purchase a subscription?

You are using AvareX. It does not need subscription till you try the Pro features.

Thank you for confirming this. All this discussion seemingly using the term Avare to refer to both legacy Avare and AvareX is just a little bit confusing.

As an early-ish adopter of AvareX I am also left in wonderment that so many refuse to transition to it, or at least try it out fully before making a decision to go back. I am by no means someone who has to have the latest and greatest like those that camp out waiting to buy the new iPhone, but I find AvareX a great improvement over legacy Avare. The legacy app was great unto itself, but things can often get better.

Some claim AvareX doesn't do everything that Avare does. Is that the case? Maybe. But have they actually given AvareX a good run through or just not gotten past it being different. Have they actually verified a feature doesn't exist, or is it just that it is accomplished in a different way than in legacy Avare?

Anyway, thank you to Zubair and the dev team for building and maintaining a great app. Donation incoming....
