I have the Stratus 3i also and had to buy a “parts only” iphone 6 (works on wifi only) just to enable Open Mode. The 3i will stay in Open Mode through power cycles but if one of my partners using FF uses it, it will switch and stay there until Open Mode is set again. If you go the route I did be sure the i-thingy you get supports IOS-12 which is needed for the Stratus Horizon Pro app.

I think I figured it out. The "Open ADSB" mode on the Stratus was off. Either another pilot did this, or perhaps it got reset by itself. The problem is that you need an iOS tablet to access the configuration. I had to borrow an iPad, install the Stratus Horizon Pro app, and the turn on the Open ADSB mode. If you don't have an iPad you will be out of luck. I hope this information helps someone else in the same situation.

In my experience with my partners when they open FF it requires them switch to proprietary mode where it will stay until I switch it back to open mode.

So are you saying that Foreflight will automatically switch off Open Mode? I thought it had to be intentionally switched off through the Horizon Pro app.

All, FWIW I reached out to the Stratus people about 6 months ago asking for some links to api documentation that might allow us to implement the connection switch. I received NO response.
I personally think that the way this is configured is very clearly intended to continue to make FF appear (artificially) to be the superior product. They can advertise compatibility of hardware (addressing their biggest detractors criticism), essentially fooling people into investing in their product. But they implemented it so their (business partner) FF always "just works", and anything else constantly needs to do time wasting and costly workarounds.
Stratus variants still receive a "no go"
recommendation from me until they address this.

I agree with you 100%! I got duped into installing the Stratus ESG/3i combo in my plane and now use a StratuX box. I do not recommend Apperreo/Stratus to anyone.
Their support sux too.

Hello Brian. I wanted to share with you and your team some frustrations and negative feelings I, and quite a few others, have been having towards Appareo, and specifically with regards to the GDL-90 Open ADS-B mode implementation on the Stratus 3i. The forum thread I've forwarded is just one example. I purchased a Stratus 3i at Oshkosh earlier this year after talking with reps at your booth, as I already had an ESG installed in my plane. I was sold on adding the 3i for better ADS-B In reception, less cockpit clutter, and effortless integration with any EFB that used the GDL-90 protocol. But quite honestly, I share the same sentiments expressed below - I feel like I was tricked into buying it based on promises that have turned out to be much more hassle and difficulty than was presented to me. Instead, I haven't gotten much out of the product besides disappointment, and I continue to use the Stratux that I built several years ago as it integrates seamlessly into my cockpit. My attempts to talk with Appareo's support team have been either dismissive or altogether ignored, and I'm hearing more and more people with similar experiences. As people continue to ask for word-of-mouth recommendations for ADS-B equipment, these interactions and lack of service and support lead me to recommend that people steer clear of Appareo/Stratus products. The Open ADS-B mode is a great idea and certainly represents what could be a move in the right direction, but it seems there still needs to be an attitude shift before it could actually be considered a viable feature. I truly hope you guys can use these criticisms constructively and take steps towards a better solution.
