I just found out about the new AVARE X and downloaded it. But I am not able to connect my ADSB to the new program. Can somebody please explain how to connect it?

John,

AvareX will automatically connect to the ADS-B in source (assuming it is GDL-90).  However make sure that you do not have any other program looking for the ADS-B data running on your tablet at the same time as only one application can receive the data at a time.

I have a Stratux. And I see the new Avare X only has a bluetooth connection and not wifi. The Stratux does show up on the bluetooth but I don't know how to get it to connect. I have tried to pair it but it fails. Any ideas?

It works with wifi. Just connect your device to the wifi signal first, and when you open AvareX it should automatically receive the ADSB signal.

I did finally get it working. But,  I do have one question. Is there a limitation on how far out traffic is shown on the screen? I ask this because on the old Avare I was able to get traffic for about 50-100 or more miles from my location. And the new app appears to only go out to the 10 mile ring.

Yes, there is a limit compared to the old Avare version, which can currently not be changed.

At first, I was not thrilled about the lack of options menu in AvareX, but I have grown to like it. It works out of the box and it picks up GPS and ADSB data automatically from whichever device is connected without having to fiddle with the IO tab and port numbers. I have both AvareX and Avare classic installed on my phone, but I have not used the classic Avare in a long time.

The inability to filter traffic has been an issue for me. When I see no traffic, I am not sure if that is because I have lost connectivity or if that is because there really isn't any traffic. Seeing an airliner pass above me at 35,000 gives me assurance that my connection is still good.

  • This is clearly the #1 most-requested feature request for AvareX (customizable ADSB traffic range)
  • The development team doesn't seem to care or acknowledge that some users of AvareX fly in wide-open spaces where the next nearest ADS-B target might be 30+ miles away and up in the flight levels but when traffic is low a user may want to expand their displayed traffic range

AvareX has the ability to change the traffic range used, look in the lower right corner there is a switch for S, M, & L this controls the range for ADS-B traffic.

S = 20 entries, +/- 3000ft , and 10nm
M = 200 entries, +/- 6000ft, and 50nm
L = is almost unlimited

Here's my take regarding the traffic to display.  The whole idea of the ADS-B traffic display is to show you the traffic around you that can be a potential threat, not to simply say "how many planes are in the sky today?"

Part of the issue with tracking aircraft becomes a memory and CPU issue, 10, 20, 30 aircraft may not be an issue but 100?  The old Avare application was limited to tracking the closest 20 targets.

For example the amount of traffic in my area (I'm based 13miles NW of EWR) is probably more than most see, I have a Raspberry Pi that is feeding both flight aware and ads-b exchange and even with the antennas in a less than ideal location, sitting in my attic I will routinely see 150+ aircraft on nice days, right now as I write this email there are 120 aircraft in view and although the WX is not bad (7 miles vis & 4500ft broken ceiling) it is a weekday and cold.

Even the certified avionics in my aircraft have limitations as to how much traffic it will display, in my case my transponder L3's NGT-9000 displays what a TCAS I would display (actually the NGT-9000 with another antenna and a software license *IS* a TCAS I (only a TCAS II that gives resolution advisories), the transponder I typically leave it for a 6mile range and "normal" for altitude which only shows traffic within +/- 2700ft of me.  I have the option to go "Unrestricted"  (above, below, or both) but even that is limited to +/- 9900ft and the furthest I can see is 40nm.

So my question on displaying traffic beyond say 15 miles and +/- 3000 feet, is it a true operational need or is it just plain curiosity wanting to see who else might be flying anywhere around?

Jeff

Oh my goodness it's what many of us have been waiting for!
"Medium" seems perfect for operational needs and balancing the processing demands of current tablets and smartphones.

Jeff, that was a quick catch and thanks for pointing it out... I was just about to delete my post and post an updated retraction of my previous complaint about traffic range limits!
I now see that this was incorporated with v0.0.68 (Thank you so much, Zubair!) and I have not had a chance to test this yet since its commit (poor flying weather around me this time of year). I'm really excited to try this out with my Stratux on my next flight.

In regards to your question about the operational needs of displaying traffic beyond an arbitrary 15 miles +/- 3000 feet, it's definitely an operational need beyond those numbers when flying in remote areas. If you fly up here in the northern plains USA near me you might be talking loud-and-clear-5x5 to someone on the same CTAF frequency who is 40nm away from you, 4,000 feet above you, going in to the same airport as you, and being the only other ADS-B target within 50nm. There's been multiple instances of a situation like this when I've been out flying this year (especially headed to fly-in events/gatherings) where previous versions of AvareX limited out distant traffic and I would have to switch apps to the Stratux web interface map page to get a rough idea of whether that aircraft was showing ADS-B out on the map and whether they appeared to be where they were saying they were over the radio. There have also been multiple flights where I've heard an aircraft beating up the pattern and self-announcing radio calls just outside/above/below the range of the previous 10nm - +/-3,000' limit which made it tough to discern if Mr. BillyBob BugSmasher over there was outside of my AvareX ADS-B limit or if he was just still non-ADS-B-equipped.

Thanks for the update Jeff and thanks for the development, Zubair!

This would be helpful as a tooltip (that window that pops up when you hover/longpress a button/symbol).

One use case is simply asserting your setup is working for traffic (your stratux, the WiFi, AvareX, etc.).  But one size rarely fits all, so knowing the puck dimension(s) and having a few options is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes, that comment can be added, good idea. Will do.

Thanks for adding the traffic display perimeter adjust-ability. I just downloaded 0.0.68 to my phone and see it in the lower right corner as described. I just made a donation, and will plan to make more when I get a chance to try it out on my tablet in flight, which unfortunately won't be for several months, but wanted to reward your responsiveness in the meantime, and encourage you not to drop the project.
Thanks again!

Hi Dustin.
Do not plan to dump the project. I said that it is not fun for me if I do not try new technologies. And fun technologies like AI cost money, and hence need to be locked to paid users.
Thanks
Zubair
