Avare external IO app does not work on Android 11. The communication method that was in the app was discontinued. Will need to find a new method.

GPS altitude is off by a hundred feet because nmea interface is not working. Will need to possibly remove coarse location as that seems to fix the issue.

GPS does not update on my pixel 3 phone some times. Need to check on other phones.

Scoped storage is under work. However scoped storage has issues with Download folder. Still working on a strategy on how to tackle this.

Android 11 has a lot of security changes which means a lot of work to change the app in many areas where interfaces we used were deemed unsecure. Hence changes needed.

I just bought an ONN 10.1 tablet that runs Android 11.   I was planning to buy a Stratux receiver and install Avare.  Will this work?

The ONN tablet has 32 GB of storage and a microSD card slot.  Will that be sufficient?

I don't see why not, just remember you no longer need the "external IO app" as its functionality has been incorporated into the Avare program itself.

Let us know how it works, as it looks to be a low cost tablet.

I just purchased a new tablet with Android 11. When I try to start Avare I get a popup asking to start GPS. Location services in Android 11 only offer 3 options for apps. Allow access only when the app is in use, Ask each time before allowing access and Deny access.  You may NOT select Allow All the Time (apparently that's reserved). GPS services are working - Google Maps finds my location, yet for Avare I get the popup each time even though I have selected Allow Access when the app is in use - but still don't get GPS. Android 8 tablet gets a GPS solution in about 30 seconds after Avare is started.

I tried installing several other GPS type apps from the Google Play Store - and all gave a warning that they were developed for an older version of Android and might not work on my device - and they didn't! Looks like Google broke Location services in 11.

> When I try to start Avare I get a popup asking to start GPS.

Does stock Android 11 still have the options to choose "inferior" (for
Google spyware) GPS or "insanely great" (for Google spyware) cell (and
WiFi?) triangulation? On my antique Androids, choosing GPS-only means a
much longer wait for the device to acquire location.

I rarely turn Android GPS on for aviation. In fact, before flight I
turn most everything Off: GPS, WiFi; turn on Airplane Mode, close all
apps, clear "memory" and "storage" (whatever those are) or even restart.
That hopefully eliminates other apps interfering with Avare too, (though
some probably launch automatically and try to take over even after restart).

Then I launch Avare (with Prefs set to use "GPS ... Avare apps only")
and turn on my StratuX, turn on Android's WiFi (on my antiques that
leaves everything in Airplane Mode *except* WiFi), connect to the
StratuX, and go flying. I find the StatuX GPS signal and location
accuracy far superior to any of my Androids, plus I enjoy all the free
FAA traffic, wx, etc. the StratuX provides in Avare and my Android isn't
burning battery looking for ways to collect and feed data to Google.
Might something like this work for you?

> Google Maps ... other GPS type apps

To the extent possible I avoid installing other GPS apps on my Avare
devices, in case they interfere w/Avare. My guess is that most/all such
apps go with Google's triangulation *and* GPS strategy, and by relying
primarily on ground-based signals they don't work well at altitude
anyway. Flying with StatuX uses only in-aircraft Android WiFi to connect
with the wealth of StratuX goodies including good GPS with a well-placed
antenna. If I can't get this to work in Android 11 and don't want the
pain of rooting, I'll just use old Androids for Avare because they seem
to work quite well.

Might something like this work for you?

John, using the Stratux as a GPS source worked on the Android 11 tablet. That's the good news. The bad news - without the external GPS, Avare doesn't work. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi Ed.
Can you post the exact Device Name, Model, AOS ver build / Kernel Ver,  Avare Ver and your Settings? Try Internal / Built in first if not All available, typically it is Not a problem for the users I interface that have Ver 11 Samsungs.
You can use Avare IO in GPS Simulator mode and see if you get data? TV

Avare uses the old GpsStatus API. This API was deprecated back in Android 7 and replaced with the GnssStatus api. Avare never was updated to support both APIs nor even the new GnssStatus api.

As time goes on, the deprecated APIs are going to start "breaking" in weird ways. So this is not surprising to me that the Location service finally broke in 11 for you.

Is this going to be fixed soon, or it's time to switch apps?

Interesting. My tablet is running Android 11 and has no such problem. Perhaps that's because I installed Avare on it when new, at which point it had Android 10, which was subsequently updated.

I'm not sure if that adds to the discussion or not, but toss it out there in case it proves useful.

My TMO stock ROM Android 11 Galaxy S9 runs external I/O still as does my TMO A52 5G now on stock Android 12.
All I had to do on A52 Android 12 update today was allow "nearby devices".

I bluetooth from a DualAv XGPS 170D.
