Hi fellow Avare users. Avare is awesome, many thanks to the developers for their extreme dedication and effort.

I've owned my first smart phone for all of about 10 days... Samsung Galaxy. Between learning Android and then Avare, my head is about to explode. Other than making a few phone calls I've had a lot of fun dnloading Avare and thrashing around in it trying to learn it. I think I've become pretty familiar with most of it, and I've used it while airborne, but the final task will be to learn to plan a flight.

In the meantime I don't seem to grasp how to use the VFR area plates. They are dnloadable by state, and I have dnloaded Idaho, but I don't understand how they are to be utilized. What area of Idaho does the area pertain to? When and how is the area chart used? Are they invoked automatically by Avare under certain circumstances, or do you invoke them manually. Most of the charts that dnload end up in the list that is accessed by pressing the MAP button and then tapping the gray bar at bottom right where you can pick SEC, TAC, WAC, HELI, etc. But the Idaho VFR area chart is not itemized in that list. So where is it? How do you use it? I don't get it. Just be glad this is my only question... I've solved about 5 dozen for myself in the last week. Cheers, Tom

Never mind... got it... I think. Since I dnloaded Idaho I see that even 'PVT' airports seem to have an 'area' plate. Sometimes a runway is shown in the plate, sometimes it is not. Even some of the well established public airports that have a paved runway don't always show a runway on the plate. I don't get that, maybe it's a glitch. Just have to keep exploring.

Hi Tom
Good that you figured it out mostly. The area plates are automatically captured from maps prepared for driving, available freely (open street maps). Some airports on these maps have runway, and some do not, hence your observation.
Let us know if you need to know something else.
Thanks
Zubair

So to clarify further, in the Plate tab view you can select between
displaying the official FAA "Airport-Diagram" (if published by FAA) or
"Area" (if you've downloaded them) to see OpenStreetMaps unofficial area
maps that show the airport and the nearby street map that's handy for
walking.

Area maps are much more likely to show small airports (for which the FAA
often doesn't supply Airport Diagrams), but are unofficial and thus of
course not recommended for flight. They can be helpful in planning and
in finding your way around on the ground, especially at small or
unlisted airports.
