What are the top feature/issue requests for AvareX? Is there a list somewhere to track for convenience to the contributing developers?

Thanks!

I don't know what other people are wanting, but an essential feature that isn't working for me is kml tracking.
This is the most valuable feature for me, since I use the start and stop times on the kml to get exact flight times for my logbook.

In my ideal world, the app would insert a row into a google spreadsheet with aircraft type, N number, timestamp, starting location, destination, and waypoints crossed, a column for notes, passengers and tach time, elapsed time, etc.
Well, actually in a more ideal world, this would go into an sqlite, mariadb, or postgres database, but I imagine that wouldn't be as accessible to as large a number of pilots.
In my totally awesome world, there would be a webapp that reads the database and allows modification, comments, PIC designation,  Tailwheel, CSP, Glider, Twin, or retractable characteristics...  but I don't really expect that.

I think X has improved a lot. The most important improvement to me has been the ability to increase the traffic being shown. I would really really appreciate if the traffic symbology could match the original Avare. The original presentation is better on size (smaller yet more visible), better on readability (white on black text on one line) and includes the speed vector.

With avarex you used to be able to click on the adsb traffic and see more information about the individual aircraft, but I can't seem to get that to work anymore.

When elevation layer is turned on while flying it makes the app run very slow/freezes almost to the point of being unusable. Not sure if that can somehow be streamlined more to require less workload on devices. I was using an iplay 60 mini pro at the time. I really like the feature though!

I think the bomb is watching my bud's EFB sync his IFR navigator flight plan, and vice versa.

It's wifi to a Garmin suite IFR navigator.  Presents on his Dynon EFIS.

It's smooth workflow and better than anything at my airline, including loading flightplans via ACARS.

My #1 priority longstanding issue/feature request for AvareX is the track KML files that are exported out of AvareX empty.
See the long conversation thread: "AvareX Track Logs Are Empty"
  • I reported this issue on Sep 12, 2024 with version 0.0.29 and have been wishfully testing each new release, hoping it's fixed.
  • The "track_YYYY_Month_DD@HH_MM_SS.kml" file that gets exported is just a header chunk of framework of XML for the missing KML data.
  • I wish I had the skills to contribute and get familiarized with Flutter code and dive in to try to understand what's all going on under the hood of:
    • storage.dart
    • map_screen.dart
    • gps_recorder.dart
  • There was a code commit on 2025-12-31 by Zubair (https://github.com/apps4av/avarex/commit/d09e831) in an attempt to address the bug (no luck, but thank you!).
  • I still am experiencing empty KML exports (DISCLAIMER I'VE ONLY TESTED v0.0.80 NOT v0.0.81 YET) even though the track display while flying around continues to work perfectly normally.
  • If anyone is able to investigate this bug in AvareX and solve the problem elegantly/efficiently/acceptably and make their pull request, I hereby declare a (unofficial/informal) bug bounty of a Venmo payment equivalent to at least one case of mediocre beer (or a few gallons of Avgas) to both the solver AND Zubair at such time as new version of AvareX has been released and verified to be exporting valid, track-containing KML files 😁... you can hold me to it! 😎👍
Thanks,
Dan R

I second that request. My instructor easily uploads his flight plans from ForeFlight via Bluetooth to the Garmin GTN650 in the plane.

Garmin has their propriety communication with others and they have chosen to work with FF. If someone can capture the communication and send me some old equipment that I can turn on and connect to test then I can take it on

Most of this will be available in version 89.

On the 2D page view of KML file, you will find Add To Logbook button. And log book entry will have a bunch of info which can be modified in log book page itself.

In my ideal world, the app would insert a row into a google spreadsheet with aircraft type, N number, timestamp, starting location, destination, and waypoints crossed, a column for notes, passengers and tach time, elapsed time, etc.

I'm going to now participate in using X and offering my user experience.  Currently I'm on a new Lenovo M8 with 4gigs of RAM, where Avare is frequently crashing. I'm Flying out of Montgomery Field in San Diego, where traffic is always heavy, ADS-B traffic is key to my survival.  The current traffic tags are too small, and without more shading gradient, are very hard to read. This is with a magnifying glass over the screen.  So I'd like larger tags and a directional wedge that stands out against a busy TAC chart.  Also, the runway extensions project for 10 miles,  adding screen clutter to an already busy display.  I'm flying everyday, so if you need a beta-tester, I'm your man.

To leverage from the previous post, I'm still using Avare.  I've recently moved to a Lenovo M8 and the app is crashing when ADSB is active.  Without ADSB, the app runs fine.  Anyone else experiencing Avare crashing and any thought on why on the M8?

Hi Duffy

Is the feedback in this email from X or legacy?

For what it's worth, I would say that my issues with AvareX have been due to my own lack of understanding. I post a question here, and someone answers it right away, and then I feel dumb - like why I was seeing those grey checkerboards - it was the ceiling layer that was inadvertently left on!

Great product and keep it going. I am 200% behind it!

I would love to see an option to have the vector pointing away from each TIS-B traffic target showing relative motion to ownship for early recognition of possible collision courses (google Garmin Target Trend technology).

I seem to recall Zubair looking for new challenging features to keep him interested, so this one should be right up his alley :) ... and also a great contribution to flight safety.

I was hoping you would ask me something harder like reducing the flying cost by 50 percent :)

@Shane Lenagh let's talk.

Yes Michal, I have seen the same behavior for a few months now where Avare is crashing on my phone and two tablets.

AvareX isn't crashing. I've noticed on two occasions where I've checked that the altitude data field was off on AvareX (by as much as 10,000ft), but accurate on Avare, so it wasn't the device. I did close out of each app as I switched; I know not to try running both at the same time. Not critical, but curious.

I agree with your comments Duffy regarding the traffic display in AvareX. If it were possible to use the legacy display approach it would be fantastic.

My comments regarding traffic target text readability and long runway extension line were within AvareX.  And let me thank you all again for your many years of hard work on Avare, keeping me safe and on track and making my flying more enjoyable.  I do appreciate you guys.

Regarding the Flyway Chart.  Could the Flyway Chart get toggled on/off overtop of the Sectional Chart as opposed to the Sectional disappearing when selecting Flyway?

Just as a tip to the Tab M8 users, I have a M8, Gen 2 I think, and the Lenovo build sucks!
The device is great for the price (I got mine for $80) but look into loading a custom ROM.  Yes, it takes some guts to load a generic ROM on a device used for ciritical functions.  I have 2, one is the original Lenovo firmware (bloatware and all) and the other is a bare bones ROM.  The bare bones works great and other than lacking all the google apps and Play Store capability, I just sideload and everything is great.  I always have the other within reach in case things go to crap and I need something I think I can trust.
I just ordered a Hugerock X72 (a "huge" step in cost from the M8) and will be playing with the ROM settings on that too.  I just always figure if I have something to fall back to, I'm pretty safe, even if the fallback is a bloated OS.

That's really good to know. Would you be in the position to put together a short tutorial on how you loaded a custom ROM on an M8? BTW, I think that the Tab One has replaced the M8, but they are probably very similar.

Thanks!

Not for the meek, but here is some of the efforts I made when loading a different ROM.  This post and those that follow relay some experiences, speedbumps and troubles.  Warning, you may render your device inoperable, so consider that before proceeding.  I will say tho, while it is cumbersome to work with, the Lenovo "Software Fix" tool (previously Rescue & Smart Assistant) seems to recover just about any situation you can get into.  Still, it will likely require some knowledge and troubleshooting of basic functions (USB, etc) to even get that to work.

Hi Guys,

Great work so far.

I would like to request a feature that locks the screen to prevent accidental changes, such as zooming, moving, or changing layers.

Here is my use case. I have AvareX running on a Samsung Galaxy Tablet that is fixed to my kneeboard. It happens quite often that my Elbox accidentally touches the screen, changing the current map setting.

Is it possible to implement a feature where long-pressing a specific field on the screen locks the screen settings, and long-pressing it again unlocks them?

Cheers,

Nepomuk

Very minor request: could the tracking layer control be moved to the top of the layers menu? I access it every flight at least twice, and rarely change any of the other layers.
Not really vital, but it would be nice.

I'm flying daily, so I'll reiterate my previous comments regarding traffic targets, and the tail#, altitude difference, and trend arrows being hardly readable.  Perhaps 2 points larger, different  font, no drop shadow, and a box shadow instead, as in the more readable Legacy Avare.  I've reduced the transparency of the chart, but that's not really helping.  I understand the orange "caution" circles surrounding potential conflicts, but some tag data gets lost in that big circle.  It's larger circumference  than it needs to be in order to catch my attention, and creates a lot of clutter when closer to the airport with 8-12 planes in the pattern/area. I'm trying hard to read the traffic that's 5 miles away and 3500' above me, which needs to be de-conflicted via radio on the county CTAF, as we all converge in coastal San Diego Class G as well as practice areas.  I find I'm spending more time staring at the tablet than I used to, which translates into less time looking outside for traffic.

I second that request, the font for traffic could be larger.
