Due to a problem (now repaired) with my initial StratuX I built another,
and now happily use the first one at home. With the great good fortune
to live beneath a major commercial air route for lots of 1090 band and
with in-home reception of the nearest UAT tower, I now use that first
StratuX at home. It serves quite well for the use you have in mind, and
is also handy during our frequent wildfires to monitor air attack
traffic while home-bound due to smoke.
In building the new one I was quite struck by how much the parts and
performance have improved while prices have actually dropped (digital
components have long been touted as continually getting better, faster,
cheaper). I also carry a "$10 ADSB" thumb drive receiver in my flight
bag, with Avare ADSB Pro (great non-Apps4Av app) and Avare on all our
Android devices that's actually come in quite handy on x/c flights a
couple of times.
You might consider using some wx shut-in time building a new Stratux to
use in flight, keeping the old one for an in-flight backup and/or home
unit/spare.
Happy Flying,
John
