Where does Avare store the tracks?  I can not seem to find the com.ds.avare folder anywhere on a Samsung Galaxy S5

Hi KB.
Look for a File called com.ds.avae, typically in the device / main storage, and look inside. TV

Thanks, but I can't find that folder. Android's file structure is unclear, at best. Definitely not the fault of your wonderful application, but I was hoping someone more experienced with Android could help me find it. I've now turned on the option to email the track file when closed, but I'm trying to locate a track from yesterday. Thank you!

Hi KB
Go to Preferences and Storage and Download then click on chart storage folder to get the location and see all your tracks in there.

I installed this file manager app - it's good at exploring pretty much
anywhere on the device to locate the files.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop

Using it, you can select the file then email it out.

I agree that the file structure is, as you put it, "unclear at best".

Thanks, that's the same file manager I'm using, but I just cannot locate any of the Avare files.  I've been through hundreds of folders searching, to no avail.  I've looked at every folder on both the internal storage and the extSDcard.

Does anyone have any idea of what the actual directory structure is on a Samsung Galaxy S5?  I can't imagine it should be this hard to find.  Lot's of other apps are under the /data/data folder, but for some reason the Avare one is not apparent.  I suspect there is something simple I'm not doing, but darned if I can figure out what it is.

I'd love some help from an Android guru, if anyone can help.

Thanks!

Hi KB.
First, did you enable track storage  Flight Tracking>Enable tracking?
In my device is under Device Storage>com.ds.avare>tracks TV

Hi!  Yes, I did enable track storage.  There is no folder or file anywhere that I can find that is com.ds.avare.  Using search from Astro doesn't find anything that has avare at all.  I can find a storage folder, data folder, extSdCard, sdcard0.  I can drill down through mnt, through storage, through sdcard, through darn near every folder on this phone, but can't find ANYTHING that has Avare.  However, the application works (VERY WELL!!!!), but where in the world is it located?  There are clearly a lot of symbolic links, because I can drill down many different ways and get to the same folders, but just can't find Avare.  It's making me crazy!

Does anyone else run Avare on a Galaxy S5?  Can anyone find the folder?

Thanks,

Hi KB.
Can you post a pic of your file tree, like this? Are you seeing the track on the chart, black line? How do you generate your track /  flight walk, sim. etc.TV

I wish we could help you get your tracks, but sounds like not easily possible. I wont recommend rooting your device and that is the only option left. Next time, email your tracks, and install Avare in a known shared folder like /sdcard/Downloads (Preferences).

Maybe a feature could be added to export tracks? Then they could be sent to DropBox, emailed, etc after the fact.

There is an existing configuration item for just that reason.

Preferences/Flight Tracking/Automatic Track Post - then select what you
want to do with the file when it is terminated.

Hi KB and everyone.
Let's give KB time to respond before we start looking at code changes, other features etc. I've probability looked at over 100 devices and the .KML file was always generate, not necessarily complete when it comes to some missing track points, in some devices,  we've discussed that before, but always there.
I am confident we can find out what the problem is, and like most of the problems that are not very logical, it's likely to be something simple. Maybe a security app is stopping it from getting generated  / viewed etc. TV

Seems likely to me. In case it's of any help at all, here's some info
on how things are working on my S4:
*Model #SCH-1545
*Android 4.4.2
*Developer Options enabled.

*Avare installed normally (not moved to SD card).
*Prefs:
~Enable Tracking checked.
~Automatic Track Post: None.

An app named "My Files" that I think came with the S4 shows a list of
random folders, with "All files" at the top representing the root
directory. I tap on that, and it shows "Device storage" and "SD memory
card." I tap on Device storage and down the list is com.ds.avare with
Tracks inside it and a list of all my KML files inside that.

A side note: in the "SD memory card" branch of the My Files mess there's
another com.ds.avare folder inside Android / data, where all my charts
are stored.

My guess is that if in fact the KML was saved, it's hidden in the S5's
internal storage due to Google's fixation with forcing us to store
everything in their cloud by changing Android in the version shipped
with the S5.

Two Suggestions:
1. Install the free open source OI File Manager and see if you can at
least see the internal com.ds.avare folder. I've noticed that this app
sometimes shows things that are hidden from the My Files app.

2. Activate the Developer Options and see if that changes what's
visible. With that activated you might also be able to access the
folder/file via a USB connection to your computer which treats the phone
as a USB drive.

Please let us know of anything you find out.

Here's how I found them.

Download "Total Commander". It's my favorite file manager.Total Commander :https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghisler.android.TotalCommander

Open total commander and tap on "file system root". Then tap the menu ellipses (three dots) and choose search. Enter *avare* and search. You'll see many com.ds.avare locations. They are the same with the exception of the pkg path. You'll probably see sdcard.com.ds.avare, mnt/sdcard.com.ds.avare, etc.

Tap the most recently modified folder and it will probably be what you're looking for.

It seems to me there can be problems with Permissions on Android apps.
Especially any apps that aren't open source. First because the apps may
have hidden code that conflicts with Avare and causes inexplicable,
intermittent and serious problems with Avare in flight. Secondly
because most free apps add full net access so they can push annoying
ads. Also, being paranoid, I don't like the idea that an app might be
collecting and using my data without my express consent. While some
open source apps might have these problems, my experience is that they
don't have permissions that aren't needed for the primary functions of
the app, and are less likely to contain hidden

> Download "Total Commander"

In the Permissions section of their Play page I see:
>>Photos/Media/Files
>> modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
>> test access to protected storage
>>Other
>> access Bluetooth settings
>> pair with Bluetooth devices
>> full network access
>> view network connections
>> prevent device from sleeping
>>Updates may automatically add additional capabilities within each group.

I compare this with the open source OI File Manager:
>>Photos/Media/Files
>> modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
>> test access to protected storage
>>Other
>> install shortcuts
>>Updates may automatically add additional capabilities within each group.

Any opinions on Permissions, and possible conflicts with Avare?

Hi John.
I do not use any app, that requires / mandates that I have Internet / WiFi enabled, during Install or in normal use, other than initial Data download, similar to Avare.
As soon as I connect to Internet, every app that wants access to your information, even if only running in the background, start feeding, like a bunch of hungry sharks on a feeding frenzy.
Before I go real flying, vs Sim, I turn All the unnecessary apps Off / Stop, including the WiFi, I never use Internet in real flight, I get my needed information Before I get in the plane.
If an app is active, like the one you show, and the WiFI / with  Internet connection is active, especially the ones that use Adds to support themselves, even if running in the background, there is a high likelihood that would it would interfere, especially the big GTrash (Maps +++), and you give them permission to get access to Location, they will try to track you everywhere you go, they want to when you go to the toilet, how much time you spent there......., it's a horrible intrusion on the person's privacy.
They will also track you every time you use any thing G- in it  like PLay, news.... without having the need for Location permission, just tracking your IP location.
The youg generation will never know, or understand, the true meaning of privacy. TV

No offense but that view seems a bit on the paranoid side.

Total Commander doesn't check the Internet when a connection becomes available. It only has that permission because it allows you to install plug-ins from within the app. Adding convenience. They don't make you go back to the play store to add functionality to the app. There are many points of view to this approach, all valid. You'll have to pick the one that suits you. I've been using total commander for years and I've had excellent battery life with it (doesn't prevent the phone from sleeping).

You could use "Greenify" to prevent apps from running in the background which helps with battery life...

Also, you could use most file managers to accomplish the steps I outlined. I prefer Total Commander because it suits my needs and I love the double window view (rotate your phone to see what I'm talking about).

Hi KB and everyone.
Mystery solved, there is no mystery to the Tracks issue. My best gues to what occured is tha either GB forgot, or did not know that you have to go to "Options>Track off " toggle, most likely or the "Preferences>Flight tracking>Enable tracking" was not enabled at the same time. I've seen that before where one or the other was enabled but not both. Maybe the fix would be to automatically enable "Preferences>Flight tracking>Enable tracking" when "Options>Tracks Off" gets toggled.
The file is being generated, stored and easily found using My files. See pics below. TV

Great work, TV. I'd noticed that before, but haven't actively used
Tracks for a while and had forgotten.

Maybe just combine them into a single option to further reduce confusion?

Thank you all for responding. After finding the folder on my nexus 7, but not on my s5, and playing with all the options and several file managers, I still could not find the folder. I decided to uninstall and then reinstall. Enabled the tracking options again, and now the folder is exactly where it should be, and the track files are accessible. Thanks!
