AvareX has a new feature.

You can now download elevation maps (ignore the expired 1606 cycle) from the Download menu and then turn on Elevation from layers.

X will then show proximity to terrain. View is updated every 10 seconds, if the altitude varies by 100 feet.

> 1000 feet no graphic
> 500 feet < 1000 feet yellow terrain
< 500 feet red terrain

See the attached picture.

Greetings:
Looks good, does it give an audio caution call out? (I have my tablet connected in the audio system in 3 of my girls)

It does not provide audio caution. @Shane Lenagh may add it.

This is a cool feature—thanks for implementing! I was just playing with it and figured I'd mention one interesting behavior. Since I'm a weirdo who frequently uses AvareX for flight planning without location services running, I naturally toggled the elevation to see what would happen. The whole world is red. Altitude defaults to 46 ft for some reason.

It's a pretty niche use case, but when y'all implemented the last known location functionality for me this year it helped me a lot. I'm now wondering if elevation should default to the terrain elevation at that point? Or maybe the altitude of the flight plan?

Probably adding an altitude slider will solve that issue but don't want to use Plan altitude as this is a safety feature.

I've been doing some initial testing of this feature and really like it. I think it has a lot of promise to increase safety. However, I think I may have found a couple bugs with the downloads for the East Central and Pacific data packages.

When attempting to download the East Central elevation I'm presented with the "Downloading..." message immediately followed by "Download Failed". The download settings are This Cycle and Main Server but I have the same issue with Next Cycle and Backup Server.

Attempting to download the Pacific elevation displays the "Downloading...." message. This is followed shortly by the progress icon which quickly progresses through downloading and installing, but then completes without actually downloading the data or so it appears. Again, this is using the current cycle and main server, but behaves the same with Next Cycle. If I switch to either cycle on the backup server it behaves like the East Central package where it immediately gives the error message "Download Failed".

I have attached a couple screenshots I was able to grab in case they are at all helpful. Because of where I am located in the country I normally download data for both the North Central and East Central areas which is how I found the issue to begin with. In my troubleshooting I attempted to download elevation for all areas and found the anomaly with the Pacific area as well. As you can see in the one screenshot, all other areas downloaded successfully.

Revisiting this, the issue with the Pacific download seems to be fixed in version 78. However, the fix for East Central seems to have been to remove that area from the download selection.

I don't have an issue with this being the fix, just wondering if the elevation data for what would be the East Central area on the provided map is actually included in another download area, and if so, which one? There is also the potential for confusing new users since the elevation data no longer follows the streamlined method of breaking down by the defined areas like everything else.

Yes the elevation data maps used by Avare were created prior to the current download area format (eg NE, SE, SC, etc...) and such don't follow the same naming convention as the current charts.

Since this data is static I am not sure there is any appetite to rebuild the data following the current geographical naming standards at this time, however maybe sometime in the future.

The elevation chart areas are from 2016
CONUS:
    North East
    South East
    North Central
    South Central
    North West
    South West

Alaska
Pacific (Hawaii)

Note Elevation/terrain is different than an obstacle database

Ahh, good point. Yes, I was thinking of it as normal changing data like the other downloads, but now that you mention it I'm guessing it based off SRTM or similar data that is only occasionally updated and can otherwise be considered static.

Given that, as long as a particular device has enough storage space, anyone using the feature can probably just download the elevation data for all areas since it's mostly a one time thing.
